It did not win: Audi’s #2 R10 TDI took overall victory, while Peugeot’s three entries finished second, third and fifth. Stéphane Sarrazin set both pole position and the fastest race lap in the #8 Peugeot, illustrating why a quick lap was not enough to decide a 24-hour contest.
What was the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP?
The 908 HDi FAP was Peugeot’s LMP1 endurance-racing prototype. Peugeot entered three cars in the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans, held on 14–15 June. The manufacturer results listing identifies the engine as a 5,500 cc V12; the Le Mans historical account describes the programme as a turbo-diesel effort equipped with a particle filter. Those sources establish the broad technical identity, but do not support a detailed specification comparison with Audi’s R10 TDI.
Peugeot’s effort sat within a wider contest with Audi, which had won the event in previous years. The 2008 race became another close chapter in that rivalry: Peugeot proved exceptionally quick over one lap, but Audi’s #2 was the overall winner. The Le Mans account of Peugeot’s 2007–2011 programme provides the series context.
How did Peugeot finish at the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans?
All three Peugeot entries finished, placing second, third and fifth overall. The crews and lap totals in the manufacturer results listing were:

Audi’s #2 R10 TDI won overall. The event retrospective records a winning distance of 5,192.649 km at an average speed of 216.300 km/h; Peugeot’s second-place #7 finished just over one lap behind. The entries, crews and lap totals are recorded in the Le Mans 24h manufacturer results, while the event retrospective identifies the winner and race figures.
Why didn’t the quickest Peugeot win?
Qualifying and fastest-lap honours measure pace over a single lap; the overall result measures performance across an entire race. Sarrazin put the #8 on pole and later set the race’s fastest lap, yet that car finished fifth. The #7 was Peugeot’s best finisher in second. The Le Mans retrospective describes the contest turning during the night as Audi caught Peugeot, and says Audi’s experience prevailed.

The available accounts support that broad race narrative, not a detailed failure-by-failure explanation or a complete comparison of pit strategy, reliability, fuel use or mechanical performance. It would therefore be misleading to attribute the result to a specific breakdown or technical weakness on the basis of these figures alone.

The pole and fastest-lap figures are reported in the 2018 Le Mans retrospective on the 2008 race. The engine listing is from the manufacturer results page. The comparison supports a straightforward conclusion: Peugeot had the single-lap edge reflected in the recorded honours, while Audi delivered the winning 24-hour result.
What happened to Peugeot 908 chassis 05?
One 908 has a particularly well-documented history. Chassis 05, built in late 2007, first appeared on track at the Le Mans Test Day on 11 June 2008 as a replacement after chassis 04 was damaged in a crash at the Porsche Curves. Chassis 05 then finished second at Le Mans with the #7 crew of Nicolas Minassian, Marc Gené and Jacques Villeneuve.

That history belongs to chassis 05, not to every 908 entered in the race. A 2016 Le Mans article also reported that chassis 05 was expected to sell for €1.2–1.6 million at an RM Sotheby’s Monaco auction and described its V12 as producing more than 700 horsepower. The auction estimate is historical reporting from 2016, not a current valuation. See the Le Mans account of chassis 05 and the auction for that car’s subsequent history.

In Peugeot’s German-language 2008 preview, Peugeot Sport Technical Director Bruno Famin said: “Wir waren im vergangenen Jahr, was unsere Strategie bei wechselhaften Wetterbedingungen angeht, nicht optimal vorbereitet.” In English: “Last year, we were not optimally prepared in terms of our strategy for changeable weather conditions.” That is a retrospective comment about the previous year’s preparation, not an explanation of the 2008 result.
