20 Sports Cars From The 2000s Still Worth Buying Today

The best sports cars from the 2000s have aged into an unusually interesting part of the used-car market. They are old enough to be affordable compared with modern performance cars, yet many still offer hydraulic steering, manual transmissions, naturally aspirated engines, limited-slip differentials, and relatively simple mechanical layouts.

That does not mean every cheap 2000s sports car is a smart purchase. At 17 to 26 years old, condition matters more than the badge. Rust, neglected cooling systems, worn bushings, accident repairs, modified wiring, and undocumented engine work can turn a bargain into a major project. The cars below stand out because they still have a distinctive driving experience, usable parts support, and a realistic ownership case—if you buy the right example.

Best affordable sports cars from the 2000s

These cars generally offer the strongest balance of purchase cost, running costs, performance, and parts availability. They are also the easiest recommendations for someone buying an older sports car for regular road use.

The third-generation Miata kept the formula intact: a light, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster with a manual transmission and uncomplicated handling. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder produced 170 horsepower, which is enough to make the car entertaining without making it intimidating.

Best buy: A manual Sport or Grand Touring, ideally with a limited-slip differential and rust-free history.

Inspect: Underbody rust, soft-top hardware, suspension bushings, clutch hydraulics, and cooling-system maintenance. The NC has excellent parts availability and a large enthusiast community, making it one of the safest choices on this list.

2. Nissan 350Z — 2003–2008

The 350Z offers a lot more power and space than a Miata while retaining straightforward rear-wheel-drive hardware. Its 3.5-liter V6, broad aftermarket, and plentiful used parts make it a practical entry point into older performance cars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best buy: A later car with the updated VQ35HR engine, a six-speed manual, and a limited-slip differential.

Inspect: Oil consumption, timing-chain tensioner noise, transmission synchros, clutch hydraulics, differential mounts, interior wear, and accident damage. A heavily modified 350Z may be cheap, but a clean, lightly modified example is usually the better investment.

3. Toyota MR2 Spyder — 2000–2005

The third-generation MR2 Spyder is one of the least expensive ways to experience a mid-engine sports car. Its low weight gives it lively responses even though its four-cylinder engine is not especially powerful.

Best buy: A manual car with clear engine records, particularly documentation of piston-ring work or an engine replacement where applicable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect: Oil consumption, precatalytic-converter failure, rust, soft-top condition, clutch hydraulics, and rear suspension alignment. A healthy MR2 Spyder feels far more special than its modest output suggests.

4. Ford Mustang GT S197 — 2005–2009

The 2005 redesign gave the Mustang a modernized chassis and retro styling, while the GT used a 4.6-liter V8 producing 300 horsepower. It combines traditional V8 character with a usable back seat, a large parts supply, and comparatively simple maintenance.

Best buy: A five-speed manual GT with an unmodified chassis and clean structural history.

Inspect: Rust, floor-pan and torque-box damage, clutch and transmission noise, early spark-plug problems, differential wear, and poorly installed suspension or forced-induction parts. Many have been modified or driven hard, so an unaltered car deserves a premium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06 — 2001–2004

The C5 Z06 remains one of the decade’s strongest performance bargains. It combines a lightweight fixed-roof body with the 385-horsepower LS6 in 2001 and 405 horsepower from 2002 onward. Performance is serious, yet LS-engine support is extensive.

Best buy: A 2002–2004 car with stock bodywork, good cooling-system maintenance, and evidence of careful use.

Inspect: Frame and rocker-panel damage, improper jacking, oil-pressure-sender failure, HVAC display problems, cracked leather, and track-related wear. Check the chassis carefully; a Corvette that has been lifted incorrectly can have expensive hidden damage.

Driver-focused sports cars that still feel special

These cars may cost more to buy or maintain, but they offer a more distinctive experience than an ordinary used coupe. They are best suited to buyers who can set aside money for specialist maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Honda S2000 — 2000–2009

The S2000 is defined by its high-revving naturally aspirated engine and precise six-speed manual. AP1 cars from 2000–2003 use a 2.0-liter engine with an 8,900-rpm redline. AP2 cars from 2004–2009 use a 2.2-liter engine with more torque and an 8,000-rpm redline.

Best buy: A stock or lightly modified manual car with complete records. The 2002–2003 AP1 is a strong compromise, while the AP2 is easier to drive quickly on the road.

Inspect: Wheel bearings, transmission synchros, soft-top condition, valve retainers, dashboard cracking, differential noise, and signs of track use. Clean S2000s are no longer cheap, so paying more for originality and documentation can be sensible.

7. BMW E46 M3 — 2001–2006

The E46 M3 pairs a usable rear seat with a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated inline-six making 333 horsepower. It remains one of the most complete performance cars of the period, especially in manual coupe form.

Best buy: A manual coupe with documented rod-bearing service and rear-subframe reinforcement or repair.

Inspect: Rear-subframe mounting cracks, rod-bearing history, VANOS operation, cooling-system components, and suspension wear. SMG cars can be enjoyable, but hydraulic-pump and actuator repairs can be expensive; the manual is the safer choice for many buyers.

8. BMW Z4 M Coupe — 2006–2008

The Z4 M Coupe combines BMW’s S54 inline-six with a fixed roof, six-speed manual transmission, and a useful hatchback cargo area. It is rarer and more focused than a regular Z4, while still being capable of long-distance road trips.

Best buy: A documented, unmodified car with cooling-system and rod-bearing maintenance addressed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect: Differential and subframe mounts, rod bearings, VANOS, rear shocks, cooling components, and expensive trim or body panels. Rarity is part of the appeal, but it can also make replacement body and interior parts costly.

9. Porsche Boxster 987 — 2005–2009

The 987 Boxster brought a more refined interior and improved mechanical package to Porsche’s mid-engine roadster. It offers excellent steering, two trunks, and balanced handling without requiring the size or weight of a 911.

Best buy: A 2007–2009 2.7-liter or 3.4-liter manual car with complete maintenance records.

10. Porsche Cayman 987 — 2006–2009

The first Cayman gives the Boxster’s mid-engine balance the added stiffness and security of a fixed roof. It is compact, precise, practical enough for trips, and still genuinely fast by modern standards.

Best buy: A manual base Cayman for a lower-risk ownership case, or a Cayman S only after a specialist inspection.

Inspect: IMS-related concerns on applicable engines, bore-scoring risk on some larger engines, rear-main-seal leaks, water pumps, radiators, and clutch condition.

11. Porsche 911 996.2 — 2002–2004

The 996.2 is still one of the more attainable ways into a modern 911. It has compact dimensions, useful everyday manners, and the steering feel that makes older 911s appealing. The styling and IMS bearing issue affect prices, but neither should replace a proper inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best buy: A 2002–2004 Carrera with documented IMS work, or a 996 Turbo if the budget includes specialist-level maintenance.

Inspect: IMS status, rear-main-seal leaks, bore scoring, cooling systems, clutch, suspension, and accident repairs. A cheap 996 is not necessarily a cheap Porsche.

2000s performance cars for power and all-weather traction

Turbocharged all-wheel-drive cars deliver huge capability, but they also attract modifications, launches, and neglected drivetrain maintenance. Originality and diagnostic testing are especially important here.

12. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII — 2003–2005

The U.S.-market Evo VIII used a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, all-wheel drive, an active center differential, and a front limited-slip differential. It feels direct and mechanical in a way many newer performance cars do not.

13. Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX — 2006–2007

The Evo IX added MIVEC to the 4G63 engine and produced 286 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque in U.S. specification. The MR used a six-speed manual and is particularly desirable, although a clean GSR can be the simpler ownership choice.

Best buy: The cleanest documented car you can find, preferably with factory equipment and no unsupported modifications.

Best buy: The most original car available, with records for transmission fluid, differential service, software updates, launch-control use, and other scheduled maintenance.

Inspect: Dual-clutch transmission behavior, launch-control abuse, turbochargers, transfer case, differentials, brakes, cooling systems, and aftermarket tuning. A specialist inspection is essential, not optional.

16. Chevrolet Corvette C6 — 2005–2009

The C6 Corvette started with a 400-horsepower LS2. The 2006 Z06 used the 505-horsepower 7.0-liter LS7, while the 2009 ZR1 produced 638 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2-liter V8. For most buyers, however, a base manual coupe is the sensible choice.

Inspect: LS7 valve-guide and head concerns on Z06 cars, brittle interior trim, Magnetic Ride components, carbon-ceramic brakes, tire costs, cooling, and track abuse.

18. Pontiac Solstice GXP — 2007–2009

The Solstice GXP uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 260 horsepower. It is quick, unusual, and considerably rarer than the Miata or 350Z.

Best buy: A manual GXP with complete records and a clean underbody.

Inspect: Water leaks, convertible-top operation, turbo plumbing, timing-chain noise, differential mounts, electrical faults, and parts availability. The GXP can offer excellent performance per dollar, but ownership is less convenient than with more common brands.

19. Mazda RX-8 — 2004–2009

The RX-8 is the specialist choice. Its rotary engine revs freely and gives the car a unique character, while the cabin provides four usable seats and the chassis has near-50/50 weight distribution.

Best buy: Only a car that passes a rotary-specialist compression test and has clear records for oiling, warm-up, ignition, and apex-seal-related maintenance.

Inspect: Low compression, hot-start problems, flooding, catalytic-converter failure, ignition coils, oil metering, rust, and cooling-system neglect. Mileage alone tells you very little about the health of an RX-8. A cheap one can become the most expensive car on this list.

20. Nissan 370Z — 2009

The 370Z arrived for the 2009 model year as a shorter, wider, and more heavily reworked successor to the 350Z. Its 3.7-liter V6 provides more power while the basic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout remains familiar and relatively serviceable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best buy: A six-speed manual coupe with a clean title and minimal modifications.

Inspect: Clutch slave-cylinder failure, oil leaks, synchros, worn suspension components, and aftermarket tuning. It is newer and faster than most cars here, but early examples still need an age-related inspection.

How to buy a 2000s sports car without buying someone else’s problems

  1. Pay for a pre-purchase inspection. Use a specialist who knows the model. Ask for a lift inspection, scan-tool report, fluid check, and road test. For rotary, turbo, or high-performance engines, add compression or leak-down testing.
  2. Verify the VIN and title. Check the manufacturer’s recall records, state title history, accident history, and whether the VIN on the chassis, dashboard, and paperwork matches.
  3. Prioritize records over low mileage. A low-mileage car can still need hoses, seals, bushings, tires, brakes, and cooling components simply because of age.
  4. Assume modifications increase risk. Turbo cars, Evos, STIs, GT-Rs, and Solstice GXPs deserve extra scrutiny if they have aftermarket engine management, exhausts, boost controllers, wiring, or swapped engines.
  5. Inspect the underside before discussing price. Look for corrosion, bent chassis rails, damaged jacking points, leaking differentials, mismatched hardware, and fresh undercoating hiding repairs.
  6. Keep a repair reserve. Set aside money after purchase for deferred maintenance. The amount depends on the model, but the reserve should be larger for a Porsche, BMW M car, Elise, GT-R, or RX-8 than for a Miata or Mustang.
  7. Confirm parts support first. Check whether common service parts, body panels, interior pieces, and model-specific drivetrain components are readily available in your area.

FAQ

What is the best sports car from the 2000s to buy today?

For the broadest range of buyers, the 2006–2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata NC is the safest recommendation. It is fun, relatively affordable to run, well supported, and easier to inspect than many higher-performance alternatives. A clean manual car with no rust is more important than a particular trim level.

Which 2000s sports cars are the most reliable?

The Mazda MX-5 NC, Nissan 350Z, Ford Mustang GT, and Chevrolet Corvette are generally among the easier cars on this list to maintain because parts and specialist knowledge are widely available. Reliability still depends heavily on rust, modifications, service history, and how the car was driven.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are older Porsche Boxsters and Caymans worth buying?

Yes, provided the purchase includes a specialist inspection and a realistic repair reserve. The 987 Boxster and Cayman deliver excellent mid-engine handling and useful luggage space, but buyers need to investigate IMS-related concerns on applicable engines, cooling systems, clutch wear, leaks, and bore-scoring risk on some larger engines.

Should I buy a modified Evo, STI, or GT-R?

Usually, an original or professionally modified car with extensive documentation is the safer choice. Ask for compression or leak-down results, tuning information, drivetrain service records, and proof that supporting modifications were installed correctly. A low price and a long list of aftermarket parts are not evidence of a good car.

The Bottom Line

The best 2000s sports car is not necessarily the fastest or rarest one. It is the example with the strongest combination of condition, documentation, parts support, and performance that you will actually use. For low-risk fun, start with a Miata, 350Z, Mustang GT, or C5 Corvette. Move to an S2000, E46 M3, Porsche, Elise, Evo, STI, RX-8, or GT-R only after budgeting for specialist inspection and age-related repairs.

Buy the maintenance history—not just the model name—and leave room in the budget for the work a 20-year-old performance car may need.
