The 1994 Audi RS2 Avant was Audi’s first RS model: a five-seat estate developed with Porsche that paired a 315 PS turbocharged five-cylinder engine with a stated top speed of 262 km/h. Porsche and Audi described it at launch as the world’s fastest estate, but that superlative is a historical manufacturer claim, not an independently verified record in the sources available here.
What the Audi RS2 Avant was
Audi based the RS2 on the S2 Avant and first presented it at the 1993 Frankfurt International Motor Show. Customers received the car from 1994. It was designed to combine high performance with the everyday utility of an Avant: five seats and a large luggage compartment.
The RS2 was not simply an Audi with a Porsche badge or a Porsche-built car wearing Audi styling. It was a joint development and production project that brought together Audi’s body and component resources with Porsche engineering and finishing work.
Why Porsche was involved—and what it contributed
The partnership covered development as well as manufacturing. Audi Tradition says Porsche built the RS2 in Zuffenhausen in cooperation with Audi’s Ingolstadt factory. Volkswagen Group’s 1994 annual report describes the production split: Audi supplied ready-painted bodies, Porsche added specially developed components, Audi carried out most assembly, and Porsche completed the finishing work.

Porsche’s contribution was visible in both the hardware and details. Its retrospective lists 17-inch light-alloy wheels derived from Porsche’s Cup car, mirrors, red high-performance brakes, bumpers, a light bar, dials and door openers among the Porsche-developed or supplied components. Audi also confirms Porsche supplied parts including brakes and wheels.
Former overall project manager Michael Hölscher described the division of work this way: “We were responsible for new parts and development services, while Audi took care of body parts and components that could be transferred from other models.” (Porsche Newsroom, 12 July 2021.)

Engine, performance and dimensions
Audi’s model-history specification lists a 2,226 cm³ turbocharged inline-five producing 232 kW (315 PS) at 6,500 rpm, with a stated top speed of 262 km/h. The same listing gives the RS2’s dimensions and unladen weight:
| Specification | Audi-published figure |
|---|---|
| Engine | 2,226 cm³ turbocharged inline-five |
| Rated output | 232 kW (315 PS) at 6,500 rpm |
| Top speed | 262 km/h |
| Length | 4,509 mm |
| Width | 1,695 mm |
| Height | 1,386 mm |
| Unladen weight | 1,595 kg |
Audi’s published 0–100 km/h acceleration figures differ slightly. Its 2022 history gives 5.4 seconds; Audi Tradition’s anniversary account says five seconds. Those are separate manufacturer-published figures, so neither should be presented as a uniquely settled measurement.

Was it really the world’s fastest estate?
Porsche says the RS2 was introduced at its 1994 market launch as “the world’s fastest estate” and notes that it was the first Audi to exceed 250 km/h. Audi lists its top speed as 262 km/h, and a 2026 Audi five-cylinder retrospective calls it the world’s most powerful production station wagon at the time.
These are related but distinct claims: “fastest” concerns speed, while “most powerful” concerns engine output. The manufacturer histories establish that Audi and Porsche used those descriptions, but the available sources do not provide an independent contemporary comparison test or an outside record certification. The strongest accurate wording is that the RS2 was marketed at launch as the world’s fastest estate.

How many Audi RS2 Avants were made?
Official sources disagree on the final production total. Audi Tradition says 2,908 cars were built over two years, against 2,200 originally planned. Porsche’s 2021 retrospective gives a total of 2,891. Volkswagen Group’s 1994 annual report records 2,021 RS2 Avants produced during that year and 1,623 customer deliveries since the April launch; those are contemporary annual and delivery figures, not a final cumulative total.
| Source and date | Figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Audi Tradition, 2024 | 2,908 | Total built over two years; 2,200 had been planned |
| Porsche Newsroom, 2021 | 2,891 | Retrospective total production figure |
| Volkswagen Group, 1994 annual report | 2,021 | RS2 Avants produced during 1994 |
| Volkswagen Group, 1994 annual report | 1,623 | Customer deliveries since the April 1994 launch |
Because the retrospective totals differ, a precise final count should always be attributed to its source rather than repeated as undisputed fact.

Keeping or collecting an RS2 today
Audi says the Audi Tradition shop carries accessories, literature and spare parts for modern classics. That is an official place to check, but current RS2-specific stock is not established here; owners should confirm part numbers and fitment before ordering.
For collectors interested in a smaller-scale version, Mattel’s official material documents a licensed Hot Wheels 1:64-scale ’94 Audi Avant RS2 miniature. That confirms the model exists, not that a retailer currently has it in stock.
