The first-generation Honda NSX—sold as the Acura NSX in the United States—was a mid-engine sports car introduced in 1990 with an all-aluminum monocoque body. If you are considering one, start by pinning down its market, model year, engine and transmission, roof configuration, and condition: the name covers meaningful changes, and parts support must be checked against the individual car.
What does “1990–2005 NSX” mean?
The date range describes the first-generation car’s history, not a universal model-year sequence. Honda dates the NSX’s debut in Japan to September 1990; Acura says the U.S. car went on sale in August 1990 as a 1991 model. It is therefore important to distinguish calendar year, model year, and market when reading an advertisement or checking a specification.
Honda described the NSX as a mid-engine sports car and called its all-aluminum monocoque body the first of its kind in a production vehicle. The development aim was not performance alone: Honda’s heritage account says the team sought to balance dynamic performance with human compatibility. Its development staff summarized that intention as: “To create a sportscar for a new era, we should balance human feelings and vehicle performance at higher levels.” Honda’s NSX heritage account provides the development context.
How did the NSX change over time?
These are broad milestones from Honda and Acura, not a complete equipment guide for every country. Confirm a specific car’s configuration by market, model year, and transmission.

What should you compare when shopping?
Before comparing asking prices or equipment, establish what each candidate actually is. An advertisement’s year alone may not settle its model year or specification.

- Market and model year: Check where the car was originally sold and how that market identifies the year.
- Engine and transmission: Verify the combination for that year and market. In the U.S. chronology, the 1997 manual received the 3.2-liter V6 and six-speed; automatic models retained the 3.0-liter configuration.
- Body and roof: Distinguish the coupe from the open-top Type-T and confirm the actual roof configuration on the car.
- Exterior revision: Note whether the car is from before or after Honda’s recorded 2001 exterior changes.
- Condition and history: Review service records, originality, and evidence that maintenance matches the vehicle. Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with a qualified professional experienced with the NSX.
- Parts support: Check availability for the exact chassis and the specific work the car may need, rather than assuming parts are readily obtainable.
Official histories establish the broad configuration milestones, but they do not provide a comprehensive buyer inspection checklist or a market-wide reliability ranking. A vehicle-specific inspection and records review are more useful than blanket claims that every NSX is trouble-free or shares a universal set of faults.
How should you check maintenance information and parts?
Acura’s 2000 NSX owner’s manual can help with operating information and maintenance references for that model year. It is not a substitute for the correct service manual when diagnosing or repairing a particular car; confirm that any manual you consult matches the vehicle’s year and market.

Honda’s parts resource includes catalogs and a continued-supply list, but it warns that some items have been discontinued. Its listed historical prices date from February 2002 or October 2003 and are not current quotations. For a parts inquiry, Honda advises checking the model, chassis number, part number, and quantity with a Honda dealer. Honda’s parts information is a starting point, not confirmation of current stock.
Honda announced a global Heritage Parts program for selected discontinued parts and restoration service in Japan, planned to start in April 2026. That announcement does not establish that a particular component is available now, in a given country, or for a particular car. Confirm present availability and applicability with Honda or a dealer before relying on a listing or budgeting a repair.

What is established about production and longevity?
Honda reported more than 18,000 NSXs sold worldwide through June 30, 2005, and announced the end of production for Europe in September and North America in December of that year. These are Honda’s reported sales and production-end figures, not a count of surviving cars or a measure of how many are currently for sale.
The official material cited here does not establish current regional inventory, running costs, a comprehensive list of common failures, or a definitive reliability score. Treat condition, service documentation, parts access, and the result of an inspection as vehicle-specific questions rather than assuming that age or reputation alone answers them.
