A sound 1987 Nissan Be-1 can be an enjoyable, unusually distinctive city car, but rust, concealed repairs, missing trim and incomplete import paperwork can cost far more than a cosmetic defect. Put the car on a lift, verify its identity and history, and test every mechanical, electrical and roof component before you negotiate.
The Be-1 is a limited-production Nissan Pike Car built on the first-generation March K10 platform. Its simple 987cc mechanical package has useful parts interchange with other K10-family cars, while its body, trim and interior pieces are much harder to replace. The inspection sequence below is designed to expose the expensive problems first.

What the 1987 Nissan Be-1 is
Nissan launched the Be-1 in Japan in January 1987 with a production limit of 10,000 cars. More than 10,000 buyers applied, so Nissan selected purchasers by lottery. The model established the Pike Car line that later included the PAO and FIGARO. Nissan’s Heritage Collection describes it as based on the first-generation March K10.
The standard-roof car is identified as BK10 in Nissan’s heritage material. The same reference lists a carbureted 987cc MA10 four-cylinder, a three-speed automatic transmission, front struts, a rear four-link suspension, front disc brakes, rear drums and 165/70HR12 tires. Curb weight is 700kg. Output is 38kW (52PS) at 6,000rpm and torque is 75Nm at 3,600rpm.

Period and catalog references also show Be-1s with a five-speed manual transmission. Because factory heritage specifications document the three-speed automatic while other references document a manual, treat transmission identification as an inspection item rather than assuming every car has the same gearbox. A canvas-top version was offered as a separate BK10 variant; its fabric, frame, drains and seals add another set of age-related failure points.

These figures are a baseline for checking a car, not a promise that every imported or modified example remains factory standard. Record the engine and transmission actually fitted, then compare it with the chassis paperwork and the seller’s description.
Start with identity, paperwork and configuration
Before spending time on a test drive, establish exactly what you are buying. A genuine Be-1 can be confused with a heavily modified March/Micra, and imported cars often have gaps between Japanese auction records, export documents and local registration.
Match the car to its records
- Photograph the chassis or identification plate and compare its number with the title, registration, import declaration and any Japanese export or auction paperwork.
- Record the engine number where it is accessible. A replacement MA10 may be mechanically acceptable, but it should be disclosed and documented.
- Confirm the body style: standard roof or canvas top. Do not value a canvas-top car as though its roof system were merely an appearance option.
- Confirm the transmission by counting gears and checking the identification information. A seller’s “manual” or “automatic” label is not enough when references for the model show both configurations.
- List all non-original parts: body panels, bumpers, wheels, seats, dashboard pieces, steering wheel, instruments and trim. Reproductions can be useful, but they should not be priced as original equipment without evidence.
Questions to ask the seller
- When and from which country was the car imported?
- Are there photographs from before restoration or repainting?
- Which panels have been replaced, cut out or welded?
- Has the engine, carburetor, automatic transmission or clutch been rebuilt?
- Is there evidence of water entry, long-term storage or flood exposure?
- Do the keys operate every lock, including the hatch and fuel door?
A clean title does not prove a rust-free shell, and an attractive restoration does not prove that the identification numbers are correct. Treat paperwork and physical inspection as separate checks.
Rust and body structure: the highest-priority inspection
Structural corrosion is the Be-1 problem most likely to turn a charming purchase into an expensive restoration. Cosmetic paint quality matters far less than the condition of the floor, sills, suspension mounts and panel seams. Arrange a lift inspection rather than relying on photographs or a walk-around.
Areas to inspect on the lift
- Floorpans and sills: Probe suspicious areas, inspect seams and look for layered plates or fresh coating over perforation.
- Jacking points: Verify that factory lifting points are solid and that a jack has not crushed or torn the surrounding metal.
- Suspension mounting areas: Examine front-strut towers, rear mounting points and nearby seams for cracking, swelling or poor welds.
- Inner and outer wheel arches: Remove or look behind liners where possible. Corrosion can progress from the inside while the visible lip still appears presentable.
- Spare-wheel well: Check for standing-water marks, pinholes and repairs beneath the carpet.
- Battery area: Battery acid and trapped moisture can damage the tray and adjacent inner fender structure.
- Door bottoms and hatch surround: Open drain holes and inspect the folded seams, lower corners and weather-strip channels.
- Windshield and side-window channels: Lift or examine the rubber edges for bubbling, staining and previous glass removal damage.
- Exterior-panel seams: The Be-1’s distinctive panel shapes create many seams where moisture and poorly sealed repairs can hide.
Specific visible trouble spots
One documented Bring a Trailer car showed rust near the right-side mirror and below the taillights. Those locations deserve a deliberate inspection on every car; a clean-looking quarter panel or mirror base should not be accepted as proof that corrosion is absent. Use a bright light and a small inspection pick, and compare the texture and thickness of metal on both sides of the car.

How to recognize a concealed repair
- Fresh, uniformly textured underseal on an otherwise aged chassis.
- Paint that changes shade or gloss between adjacent panels.
- Ripples visible in reflected light along a sill, arch or lower quarter.
- Filler that extends beyond the apparent repair area.
- Weld beads with inconsistent spacing, excessive heat marks or no matching work on the opposite side.
- Door, hood or hatch gaps that narrow at one end, or closures that require lifting, pushing or slamming.
Do not confuse a tidy underbody with a healthy one. Ask the inspector to photograph suspicious areas before any coating is removed, and obtain a repair estimate that separates metal replacement from cosmetic refinishing.

Canvas-top inspection
The canvas-top Be-1 is a separate configuration, not simply a standard-roof car with an aftermarket sunroof. Operate the roof from fully closed to fully open while watching the frame for binding and listening for rubbing or popping noises.
Check the fabric and hardware
- Look for cracks, thinning, hardened sections, patched areas and stitching that has pulled away.
- Inspect the frame for bent bows, corrosion and missing fasteners.
- Pour a small amount of water over the roof and confirm that it drains outside the cabin; never accept a seller’s claim that a damp headliner is old condensation.
- Examine the front seal, side seals, rear seal and drain paths for shrinkage or blockage.
- Lift carpets and inspect the floor, seat mounts, inner sills and spare-wheel well for water staining or surface rust.
Replacement fabric and unique roof hardware may be more difficult and costly to source than ordinary service parts. Price the repair before treating a canvas-top car as a bargain.
Engine and transmission checks
Cold-start procedure
- Inspect the engine before it has been warmed. A seller who starts the car before you arrive may be hiding smoke, hard starting or a noisy timing system.
- Check oil level and condition, coolant level and evidence of oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil.
- Start the engine from cold and listen for timing-chain or valvetrain rattle, piston slap, exhaust leaks and deep bottom-end knocks.
- Watch the tailpipe during startup, idle and acceleration. Blue smoke indicates oil burning; persistent white smoke after warm-up can indicate coolant entry; black smoke or a strong fuel smell suggests over-fueling.
- Allow the engine to reach operating temperature. Confirm a stable idle, clean throttle response, no overheating and no coolant loss.
- Use an oil-pressure gauge if available rather than relying only on the dashboard warning lamp.
The MA10 is a small, conventional engine, but age, neglected cooling systems and carburetor wear matter more than the engine’s simple design. A recent service receipt is useful only if it identifies parts and work performed.
Manual transmission
On a five-speed car, test every gear at low and moderate speed. A difficult first or reverse gear can indicate clutch drag; baulking or grinding during upshifts points toward worn synchronizers. Check for clutch slip under load, a high or inconsistent engagement point and release-bearing noise with the pedal depressed. Look for oil seepage around the gearbox and driveshaft areas.

Three-speed automatic
On the documented three-speed automatic, select reverse and drive from cold and note the engagement delay. During the road test, check for slipping, harsh or flared shifts, correct kickdown operation and unexplained noises. Verify that the transmission reaches all three forward gears and that fluid is not burnt-smelling or visibly contaminated. A transmission problem should be priced as a repair project, not treated as a minor tune-up.

Steering, suspension, brakes and tires
With the car safely lifted, check steering and suspension before driving. Excessive steering play can come from tie-rod ends, the rack, column joints or loose mounting points. Inspect front struts for leakage and bent components, and examine rear four-link bushings for cracking, separation or movement.
- Rock each wheel to identify wheel-bearing or ball-joint looseness.
- Check that the steering returns smoothly after a turn and does not bind.
- Inspect brake discs, drum surfaces, wheel cylinders, hoses and hard lines for corrosion or leaks.
- Test pedal firmness, brake pull, parking-brake travel and the operation of the warning lamps.
- Check that all four tires match the intended size and inspect their age, sidewalls and tread for cracking.
Nissan lists 165/70HR12 tires for the standard-roof specification. Modern substitutions may be safe when correctly selected, but mismatched sizes can alter gearing, steering effort and speedometer accuracy. Perished suspension and brake rubber should be budgeted even when the car has passed a basic roadworthiness inspection.
Electrical system and cabin
Electrical faults are often the result of decades of repairs, corrosion or brittle connectors. Test every function with the engine both off and running.
- Headlamps, tail lamps, brake lamps, indicators and hazard flashers.
- Horn, windshield wipers, washer pump and heater blower at every speed.
- All gauges, warning lamps, charging voltage and instrument illumination.
- Radio, interior light, glove-box light and any added accessories.
- Door locks, window regulators, hatch release and seat-belt hardware.
Inspect the fuse box for heat damage or corrosion and look under the dashboard for twisted wires, household connectors and unfused additions. Check carpet, headliner and door cards for moisture staining. Dashboard cracks, damaged seat mounts and missing interior trim can be harder to correct than a routine electrical repair because Be-1-specific pieces are scarce.
Parts, service information and maintenance reality
The mechanical base is more supportable than the car’s unusual styling suggests. Parts catalogs show cross-references between Be-1 BK10 MA10S applications and K10 March/Micra, FIGARO and PAO applications. Examples include engine-mount part number 1122002B01, piston-ring part number 1203501B05 and outer side-rod socket part number 4852017B25.
Cross-compatibility is not the same as guaranteed availability. The same catalogs show zero availability for some entries, and dimensions, revisions and market specifications can differ. Search by the exact Nissan part number, compare measurements and ask the supplier to confirm fitment before paying. Keep the original part until the replacement has been proven.

For routine maintenance, assemble part numbers and measurements before dismantling the car. That habit matters because a shared mechanical component may be findable while a cracked grille, trim strip, instrument surround or canvas-top fitting may require a specialist search or a reproduction.

There is no authoritative population-wide reliability statistic for the Be-1. Reliability therefore depends mainly on shell condition, previous maintenance, storage and the quality of any restoration. The MA10’s conventional layout and shared K10-family components can simplify mechanical work, but they do not eliminate age-related failures in cooling, fuel, rubber, wiring, seals and automatic-transmission systems.
Consider a car reliable enough for regular use only after it has demonstrated stable temperature, oil pressure, charging voltage, braking performance and consistent starting in repeated tests. A recently painted car with unknown mechanical history is not automatically more dependable than an honest, well-documented driver with original cosmetics.

Before sending money or arranging international transport, commission an independent inspection. Have the inspector document rust thickness, weld quality, cold-start behavior, gearbox operation, brake condition and the completeness of the trim. A lower purchase price is not a bargain if transport and hidden structural work consume the difference.

- Structure: Which shell has less corrosion, fewer questionable patches and sounder suspension mounts?
- Repair quality: Are repairs visible, photographed and properly welded, or hidden beneath filler and underseal?
- Completeness: Does each car retain the correct bumpers, lights, wheels, trim, instruments and interior pieces?
- Drivetrain: Which engine starts cold, runs at the correct temperature and has the healthier manual or automatic transmission?
- Documentation: Which car has matching identification, import records, title and maintenance invoices?
- Roof system: For canvas-top cars, which one has dry interior materials, usable drains and a sound frame?
- Total cost: Add transport, immediate safety work, tires, seals, rust repair and missing parts to the asking price.
Choose the car with the better shell and documentation even if its paint is less impressive. Mechanical components can often be repaired or cross-referenced; replacing corroded structure and rare trim is less predictable.
A practical purchase sequence
- Request chassis, engine, title and import-document photographs before traveling.
- Ask for a cold-start video showing the dashboard, exhaust and engine temperature rise.
- Inspect the car in daylight, checking panel gaps, paint variation, rust bubbles and evidence of filler.
- Operate every door, lock, window, lamp, switch and roof mechanism.
- Drive the car long enough to reach operating temperature and test acceleration, braking, steering and all transmission functions.
- Put it on a lift for the structural inspection; remove carpets or access panels where moisture is suspected.
- Obtain written estimates for every safety issue, structural repair and missing unique part.
- Compare the adjusted total with dated auction and market references, treating the $9,000 December 2023 sale as one reference point rather than a current average.
- Make the offer conditional on a satisfactory independent inspection and on receiving the documents needed for registration and transport.
Common buying mistakes and the fix for each
Buying the prettiest car
Problem: Fresh paint hides corrosion and panel distortion. Fix: Inspect seams, floors, sills, arches and suspension mounts on a lift before discussing final price.
Assuming shared parts mean easy restoration
Problem: K10-family interchange helps with some mechanical items but does not solve trim, body or canvas-top shortages. Fix: Inventory every missing piece and confirm a source before buying.

Problem: A documented $9,000 sale does not describe every condition, market or date. Fix: Adjust for structure, originality, transmission, documentation and current repair needs.
Skipping the cold start
Problem: Warm engines can conceal hard starting, smoke, carburetor faults and noisy valvetrains. Fix: Arrange the inspection so the engine is cold when you arrive.
Ignoring water entry
Problem: A leaking canvas top or window channel can damage floors, wiring and interior trim. Fix: Inspect drains, seals, carpets and the spare-wheel well, then test the roof and windows.
Decision rule
Proceed when the Be-1 has a structurally sound shell, matching paperwork, complete trim and a drivetrain that behaves correctly when cold and hot. Negotiate aggressively or walk away when rust is hidden, identification is unclear, water damage is extensive, unique parts are missing or the seller will not allow an independent lift inspection. The best Be-1 purchase is the car that needs predictable maintenance, not the one that merely photographs well.
