The Toyota AE86 is the rear-wheel-drive, 1.6-liter DOHC sports variant in the fifth-generation Corolla and Sprinter family. In Japan, the related sporty models were sold as the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno: the Levin has fixed headlights, while the Trueno has retractable headlights. The code, body style, trim and market all matter when identifying a car or checking parts fitment.
What does AE86 mean?
When Toyota introduced its fifth-generation Corolla family in 1983, most family-use models moved to front-wheel drive. Toyota retained a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout for the sporty coupe models. In Toyota’s explanation of its Japanese model codes, only cars equipped with the 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4A-GEU engine received the AE86 designation. Toyota separately identifies the 1.5-liter 3A-U version as the AE85. Toyota’s Corolla lineage and its Sprinter history document the related models.

AE86 is commonly used by enthusiasts as a name for the cars, but it is not a complete description of every specification. Toyota’s historical records concern Japanese-market model lines; export-market names, grades and equipment can differ. For an individual car, check its market-specific documents and vehicle identification rather than assuming that every Corolla GT or every car called an AE86 has identical equipment.
How are the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno different?
They are related sporty models from the Corolla and Sprinter ranges, not simply two names for one identical body. Their most visible distinction is the front end: the Corolla Levin has fixed headlights, and the Sprinter Trueno has retractable headlights. Toyota records both lines as released on May 12, 1983.

That distinction is useful when identifying a car in photographs or listings, but it does not establish that every part is interchangeable. Market, model code, body, grade and production phase can affect specification and fitment.
Which body styles and specifications were offered?
Toyota’s model history describes two-door notchback and three-door hatchback coupe bodies, along with 1.5-liter 3A-U and 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve 4A-GEU engine options across the broader range. The AE86 designation in Toyota’s explanation applies to the 4A-GEU-equipped cars, not the 1.5-liter AE85. For a concrete reference, Toyota lists the following figures for a representative Japanese-market Corolla Levin GT APEX three-door:

- Officially Licensed Replica – Authentic styling and branding from the original manufacturer
- Die-Cast Metal Construction – Durable metal body with detailed plastic components
- Highly Detailed Design – Realistic exterior styling and interior details
- Free-Rolling Wheels – Smooth movement for display or play
- Perfect for Collectors & Kids – Great gift for automotive fans
| Specification | Representative Japanese-market Levin GT APEX three-door |
|---|---|
| Engine | 4A-GEU |
| Displacement | 1,587 cc |
| Output | 130 PS at 6,600 rpm; Toyota labels this a gross rating |
| Curb mass | 960 kg |
| Length × width × height | 4,200 × 1,625 × 1,335 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,400 mm |
These are grade-specific historical figures, not universal specifications for all AE86-market cars. Toyota’s Sprinter history gives the same engine, displacement and output for a representative three-door 1600 GT APEX, and identifies a 1,452 cc 3A-U for the AE85 comparison. It says the GT initially had a five-speed manual; an electronically controlled four-speed ECT-S automatic became an option in May 1985. Toyota UK, describing the car sold in its market, reports 124 bhp for its AE86. That is a separate market and source context from Toyota’s Japanese table, so the figures should not be treated as directly equivalent ratings.

No. Toyota UK says its market received a fixed-headlight, three-door Corolla GT Coupe. That example shows why the name alone does not establish which body or front-end version was sold locally. A car advertised as an AE86 may also be described by a market-specific model or grade name. Toyota UK’s account also divides production into an early phase from August 1983 to July 1985 and a late phase from August 1985 to July 1987. Enthusiasts often call these pre- and post-facelift cars Zenki and Kouki; those labels are shorthand, not a substitute for checking a specific car’s documentation. Toyota UK’s AE86 history provides its local-market context.

How to identify an AE86 listing or check a part
Before buying a car or ordering a component, compare the details that determine what the vehicle actually is:
- Market and model code: establish where the car was originally sold and check its vehicle documents; don’t infer the code from a badge or listing title alone.
- Levin or Trueno: distinguish the fixed-headlight Levin from the retractable-headlight Trueno.
- Body style: confirm whether it is a two-door notchback or three-door hatchback.
- Engine and grade: verify whether it has the 4A-GEU and which trim applies; distinguish it from the 1.5-liter AE85.
- Transmission and production phase: check the actual transmission and whether the car is early or late, rather than relying only on enthusiast shorthand.
- Part number and application: match the exact Toyota part number to the market and vehicle details before ordering.
Are Toyota AE86 replacement parts still available?
Toyota announced its GR Heritage Parts Project for the AE86 in 2021 to reproduce discontinued parts as genuine Toyota parts. Initial examples included rear brake calipers, steering knuckle arms and rear driveshafts. Toyota said parts would be introduced as preparations allowed, produced for limited periods and sold only while stocks lasted after production ended; availability varies by region. Its 2021 announcement describes the project and its limits.

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s AE86 GR Heritage Parts catalog, dated August 1, 2026, lists part numbers and applications across Japan, USA and Europe model ranges. It says parts can be purchased through Toyota dealers like regular spare parts and notes that product design, specifications and prices may change without notice. A catalog listing is not a guarantee of local stock: confirm current availability and the application with a Toyota dealer before purchase.
