The 1975–1980 Jaguar XJ-S V12 is the model’s early, pre-HE period: a 5.3-litre grand-touring coupé introduced in September 1975. Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust lists its 1975 example at 285 bhp and 142 mph, but those figures describe that launch-era car, not every market or model year. A key identification wrinkle is that Jaguar changed from early chassis-number sequences to short VINs in May 1978.
What is the 1975–1980 Jaguar XJ-S V12?
Jaguar launched the XJ-S in September 1975 as its first model in the International Grand Touring class. It was a grand-touring coupé, not a direct styling continuation of the E-type. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust’s collection car is a 5.3-litre V12 coupé. Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust: 1975 Jaguar XJ-S V12 Coupé OOM 555R
The XJ-S used a shortened floorpan from the XJ saloon range, with similar suspension and other chassis parts. Most V12 cars had automatic transmissions, although the Trust notes that a small number were built with manuals. Exact equipment and specification can vary by market and car, so use vehicle records and identifiers rather than assuming every example matches the collection car. Were 1975–1980 XJ-S V12s pre-HE?
At the model-range level, 1975–1980 belongs to the pre-HE V12 period. The year range should not be treated as a substitute for checking an individual car: the Heritage Trust records the first HE-engine car at assured VIN 105048 in February 1981, just beyond this period. Verify the vehicle’s engine and identity against its VIN, chassis details and records. Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust: Jaguar XJ-S
How to identify an early XJ-S by chassis number or VIN
The year span crosses a major identification change. Jaguar introduced the short-VIN format in May 1978; earlier cars use chassis-number sequences. The Heritage Trust guide gives year-by-year starts for right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive early coupés, and first short VINs for 1978, 1979 and 1980. Its change points and dates are approximate guides, not a substitute for authenticating a specific car.

- Record the car’s actual identifier. Note the VIN or chassis number as stamped and shown in its documents.
- Establish production context. Check the relevant early chassis sequence or short-VIN listing, accounting for market and production date rather than relying on registration year alone.
- Cross-check the vehicle. Compare the identifier with Jaguar records, engine identity and car-specific documentation before concluding its year or specification.
Use the Heritage Trust’s XJ-S chassis and VIN guide for sequence details. Because the Trust describes the listed change points as approximate, an identifier near a transition should be resolved using the vehicle’s own records.
Which repair information should you use?
For maintenance or restoration, choose XJ-S V12 material that matches the car’s year, engine version and market. Jaguar’s technical-publication catalogue lists pre-HE V12 parts bulletins and service bulletins covering 1975–1981. The catalogue listing does not mean every document applies to every car, so check its stated coverage before using it for parts selection or repairs. Jaguar technical-publication catalogue

What the 1975–1980 label can—and cannot—tell you
The range label identifies the XJ-S’s early V12 era, but it does not provide a complete year-by-year account of trim, equipment or regional specification. Nor does it establish an individual car’s condition, authenticity or present value. For a car-specific assessment, prioritize production date, VIN or chassis sequence, engine version, market specification, transmission and supporting records.
