Their engines, equipment, styling, and prices should be considered by model year—not treated as one continuous specification. The clearest period-specific equipment reference here is Ford’s 1969 brochure; the available price figures are examples, not a complete year-by-year price or value guide.
What years did Ford make the Mustang Mach 1?
Ford introduced the Mach 1 for 1969 and continued the name through 1978. The range divides into two eras:
| Model years | Mustang generation | What distinguishes the era |
|---|---|---|
| 1969–1973 | First-generation Mustang | The Mach 1 was a SportsRoof model. Ford’s 1969 brochure documents a 351-cu.-in. 2V V-8 and a substantial equipment package for that year. |
| 1974–1978 | Mustang II | Ford describes the Mustang II as a downsized Mustang generation. Its engine context differs from the earlier cars: the standard Mustang II powerplant was a 2.3-liter four-cylinder, and a 302 V-8 returned to the option list for 1975–1978. |
The Mustang II’s general engine lineup is not, by itself, a complete Mach 1 specification. Check the individual car’s model year and documentation rather than carrying the 1969 equipment or engine details forward into later years.
What are the specs on a 1969 Mustang Mach 1?
Engine and mechanical equipment
Ford’s 1969 Mustang brochure lists a 351-cu.-in. 2V V-8 and other GT Equipment Group mechanical components as Mach 1 inclusions, along with competition-handling suspension. The brochure does not make those details a specification for every Mach 1 year.

Exterior and cabin equipment
The same brochure lists F70-14 wide-oval white-sidewall belted tires, low-gloss black paint on the hood and cowl, and a special sound-insulation package. It also describes high-backed bucket seats, dual racing-type mirrors with remote control for the driver’s side, molded door trim with integral armrests and safety/courtesy lights, a woodlike three-spoke Rim-Blow steering wheel, and a floor console.
Other listed 1969 details include reflective body-side and rear tape stripes, teak-toned instrument-panel and cluster appliques, bright-trimmed floor pedals, an electric clock, swing-out quarter windows, tinted rear glass, and rocker-panel molding. These are useful clues when identifying or restoring a 1969 car, but the brochure’s list should not be assumed to describe later model years unchanged.

How did the Mach 1 change across the 1969–1978 range?
1969–1973: first-generation SportsRoof
The Mach 1 began in 1969. Hagerty describes a revised front appearance for 1970, while its year-specific entries also report different original prices for 1970 and 1971. The first-generation run ended with the 1973 model year; Hagerty identifies 1973 as the final year of that Mustang generation.
1974–1978: Mustang II
The Mach 1 name continued in the smaller Mustang II range. Ford’s retrospective identifies a 2.3-liter four-cylinder as the Mustang II’s standard powerplant and says a 302 V-8 returned to the option list for 1975–1978. Hagerty’s 1977 model page identifies a Mustang II Mach 1. Those facts establish the later car’s distinct context, not a full specification sheet for every Mustang II Mach 1.

How much did a Mustang Mach 1 cost new?
The available original-price figures are limited examples from different sources, not a complete MSRP series. They are historical prices, not present-day values.
| Model year | Reported original price | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1969 | $3,122 | Hagerty describes this as the Mach 1 fastback’s starting price. |
| 1970 | $3,271 | Hagerty’s reported original Mach 1 price. |
| 1971 | $3,268 | Hagerty’s reported Mach 1 price. |
| 1978 | $4,523 | CJ Pony Parts lists this as the original price for the Mustang II Mach 1. |
Because these are reported figures from different years and sources—and the 1978 car belongs to a different generation—they should not be read as a complete price trend. No comparable original-price figure is established here for every year from 1969 through 1978.

How much is a 1970 or 1973 Mustang Mach 1 worth?
Collector value depends on the specific car and the date and type of price reference. Hagerty’s condition-based figures provide dated examples, not guaranteed sale prices or universal asking prices.
| Model year | Reported guide figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 1970 | $42,867 | Hagerty’s October 2026 estimate for a Mach 1 in #3 Good condition. The page reports quarterly and annual movement, so the figure is time-sensitive. |
| 1973 | $21,500 | Hagerty’s 2026 report for a Mach 1 in #3 Good condition. |
These two guide figures do not establish that one year is inherently worth more than the other. A meaningful comparison needs aligned details: model year and generation, engine, transmission, condition, originality, and valuation date. A guide estimate is also a different kind of evidence from an asking price or a completed sale.

What should you check when comparing or buying one?
- Confirm the model year and generation. First-generation cars are 1969–1973 SportsRoofs; 1974–1978 cars are Mustang IIs.
- Verify the individual car’s configuration. Check its engine, transmission, equipment, and any available documentation against references for that specific model year. Do not assume a 1969 feature list applies to another year.
- Assess condition and originality. A condition-grade estimate is not interchangeable with a price for a car in another condition or with different originality.
- Identify what kind of price you are using. Keep original price, current guide estimate, asking price, and completed sale distinct, and record the reference date.
- For restoration, verify fitment by year and configuration. Use year-specific Mustang Mach 1 restoration parts only after confirming the model year, trim, engine, and application for the vehicle.
Sources and specification limits
Ford’s 1969 Mustang brochure is the period source for the 1969 equipment described above. Hagerty provides year-specific model descriptions and the cited condition-based valuation examples; CJ Pony Parts is the source for the listed 1978 original price. These references do not establish a complete factory specification, production-statistic, or original-price table for every model year in the 1969–1978 range.
