The 1973 BMW R 90 S was the sporty flagship of BMW’s revised /6 range: an 898 cc air-cooled boxer with a handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing, twin front disc brakes and, at launch, Smoke Silver paint. BMW lists 67 hp at 7,000 rpm and a 200 km/h top speed. Daytona Orange came later, from 1975, so it should not be presented as an original 1973 color.
What makes the 1973 BMW R 90 S special?
BMW introduced the R 90 S in 1973 as the flagship of its revised /6 series. BMW Group Classic records production from 1973 through 1976, with 17,465 motorcycles built. BMW’s anniversary account calls it the company’s first superbike; that is BMW’s characterization, rather than a universal definition of the category. The model arrived in a significant year for BMW Motorrad: the company marked its 50th anniversary and produced its 500,000th motorcycle.
BMW credits designer Hans Muth with the R 90 S’s styling. Its most recognizable feature is the cockpit fairing mounted to the handlebars, paired with a flowing fuel tank and characteristic bench seat. BMW describes this as the world’s first series-production cockpit fairing attached to the handlebars. BMW Motorrad also highlights the twin front disc brakes, which distinguished the model’s equipment.
BMW’s historical account connects the R 90 S with competition successes that followed its launch: Hans-Otto Butenuth and Helmut Dähne won their class at the 1976 Production TT; Steve McLaughlin won the Daytona 200 that year, and teammate Reg Pridmore became American Superbike Champion. Those results belong to the model’s racing history; they do not establish that an individual road motorcycle raced.

These are published model figures, not a promise of the performance of any surviving motorcycle. The BMW sources do not agree on one top-speed figure: use the attribution if quoting a precise number rather than treating 198 and 200 km/h as interchangeable. BMW Group Classic gives a 1973 price of DM 9,130; a separate BMW Group historical feature gives DM 8,510. The sources do not explain the difference, so neither amount should be treated as an uncontested price.
What colors did the 1973 R 90 S come in?
BMW says the R 90 S initially appeared in Smoke Silver. Daytona Orange followed later: BMW Group Classic dates the second livery from 1975 onward. Accordingly, Daytona Orange is not established as an original 1973 option. Historical model accounts cannot verify the paint, pinstriping or originality of a specific motorcycle; that requires inspecting the individual bike and its documentation.

Where to find R 90 S manuals and parts references
The Vintage BMW Reference Library lists English-language R 90 S owner handbooks and parts manuals, as well as a repair/workshop manual for /6 and 90 S models. Its listed 1975 US-model owner’s manual covers the R 60/6, R 75/6, R 90/6 and R 90 S. Check the market and edition before relying on a manual, since coverage and specifications can vary.
The scanned 1975 US-model manual schedules minor service every 7,500 km (5,000 miles) and major service every 15,000 km (10,000 miles), with oil and filter work included in its schedule. These are period maintenance intervals, not an assessment of what a decades-old motorcycle needs now. The manual advises: “Maintenance work should be carried out by an authorized BMW service agent, because good mechanical knowledge, BMW special tools and a repair manual are essential to perform this kind of work.” That is the manual’s period guidance, not current legal or technical advice.

BMW Motorrad has an indexed parts-catalog page for original parts for the 1973 R 90 S, and the reference library lists a parts manual. A catalog listing does not mean every part is currently available, original or compatible with a modified motorcycle. Confirm part numbers and fitment with a specialist before ordering.
