The Porsche 718 RS 60 was the 1960-season evolution of the 718 sports-racing Spyder, built in a reported run of 19 cars to meet new FIA rules calling for a closer relationship between racing and production cars. Porsche credits the model with major victories at Sebring and the Targa Florio, as well as success in the European Hill Climb Championship. “Werks” means factory involvement, but it does not identify a particular chassis; 718-044 is one documented works example, not a stand-in for every RS 60.
What the 1960 Porsche 718 RS 60 was
The RS 60 belonged to Porsche’s mid-engined 718 Spyder racing line. Porsche says it introduced the model for the 1960 season in response to FIA regulations that required sports-racing cars to bear a closer relationship to production cars. The company reports that it built 19 examples and describes the RS 60 as the 1.6-liter-class successor in the 718 line and a leading car in that class. Porsche’s account of the 718 and its racing history provides the model-level context.
The name should be read carefully. “RS 60” identifies the 1960 racing model discussed here, not later road cars that reused the designation. “Werks” signals factory association, but a title or listing using the word alone is not enough to establish a car’s chassis identity or competition record.
What changed for the RS 60
Porsche’s heritage account describes reshaped bodywork and engines using a stronger crankshaft as changes for the RS 60. These updates formed part of the model’s development within the 718 line; the available descriptions do not establish a full specification sheet or a single configuration applicable to every surviving car. Porsche’s heritage history of the 718 discusses the redesign and its racing results.

Racing record: model achievements, not one car’s record
Porsche credits the RS 60 type with overall victories at the Targa Florio and the 12 Hours of Sebring, and with the European Hill Climb Championship in 1960 and 1961. Its heritage account also highlights the Sebring and Targa Florio wins. These are model-level achievements: they should not be assigned wholesale to any individual RS 60 without chassis-specific records.
Racing Sports Cars’ archive provides examples of individual entries: it lists a Sebring first place for Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien in chassis 042, and a Targa Florio first place for Jo Bonnier and Herrmann in chassis 041. The archive also reports 245 events and 74 wins in its available records, while cautioning that its database may not cover every event. Those figures are archive totals, not a complete factory record. See its 1960 RS 60 results and RS 60 archive summary.

Chassis 718-044: one documented works example
RM Sotheby’s describes 718-044 as a Works example and the final factory-campaigned RS 60 built. Its catalog says Jo Bonnier and Graham Hill entered the car in the 1960 Le Mans 24 Hours. It started 54th, rose to 14th overall and led the two-liter class before retiring with engine failure in the 18th hour. The catalog also recounts later competition, including a second place at Mosport with Bonnier in 1961. These are claims from the auction catalog, not a substitute for the original factory file or event records. RM Sotheby’s 718-044 catalog is the source for this chassis-specific account.
The catalog reproduces a statement attributed to Porsche historian and racing figure Jürgen Barth about 718-044’s factory history. Because the wording is presented through the seller’s catalog rather than independently checked against the underlying letter, it is best treated as a catalog-reproduced attribution, not as a directly verified quotation.

How to assess an RS 60’s identity and history
For a particular car, separate the model’s history from the vehicle’s own evidence. A convincing identification depends on chassis-specific documentation rather than the words “RS 60” or “Werks” in a description. Relevant records and questions include:
- Chassis identity: Does the chassis number match period records and the car’s supporting documentation?
- Factory or customer history: Is factory competition involvement documented for this chassis, or is the claim based only on the model being associated with Porsche’s works team?
- Configuration: What do the records establish about the car’s bodywork and engine, and do those details correspond to its documented period history?
- Provenance: Are ownership, event entries, results and later changes supported by records specific to this car?
These distinctions matter because Porsche’s published history supports the RS 60’s model-level story, while individual competition narratives depend on chassis-level sources. An auction catalog can be useful evidence of what a seller claims, but it should be attributed as such when stronger records are not available.

RS 60 parts manual
A 1960 Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder parts manual is documented in an ended PCARMARKET auction listing as an original physical manual published in German, English and French. That record establishes that such a reference item existed; it does not show that the manual is currently for sale or available through Amazon. The PCARMARKET listing is a historical auction result, so any prospective buyer would need to confirm current availability, edition and completeness independently.
