The years 1947–1959 are a useful scope for its early history, but they should not be read as precise factory model years: published accounts differ on when production ended. The Silver Wraith was sold as a rolling chassis, so a specialist coachbuilder—not a single standardized factory body—gave each car much of its individual character.
What was the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith?
The Silver Wraith was the first model in Rolls-Royce’s postwar Rationalised Range. The company says the range shared common parts and used a chassis that could be configured in different dimensions, an approach shaped by postwar commercial conditions. For the Silver Wraith, rationalized engineering did not mean a uniform finished car: it retained bespoke coachwork.
Rolls-Royce describes the production arrangement this way: “Until 1949, Rolls-Royce motor cars were produced only as ‘rolling chassis’, equipped with an engine and drivetrain, on which a specialist coachbuilder then built bodywork to the customer’s specification.” Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ Silver Wraith heritage history explains the company’s launch and rolling-chassis approach.
How was it different from the Silver Dawn?
The Silver Wraith and Silver Dawn illustrate Rolls-Royce’s gradual move toward more standardized production. The Silver Wraith remained a rolling chassis for bespoke bodies. The Silver Dawn, introduced in 1949, was the company’s first complete motor car produced as a finished vehicle.

Rolls-Royce places both models within its postwar history: its Silver Wraith account dates the Wraith’s launch to 1946, while its Silver Dawn history describes the later car as the first complete motor car produced by the company. Bespoke coachbuilding continued alongside the move toward a complete-car model.
Who built the Silver Wraith’s body?
A customer chose bodywork to be built onto the chassis by a specialist coachbuilder. Hooper, H.J. Mulliner and Park Ward are among the firms associated with Silver Wraith coachwork, according to the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Club of New Zealand’s model overview. That list is not a complete roster, and it should not be used to identify the body on an individual car.

For a specific Silver Wraith, distinguish the chassis identity from the coachwork identity. Chassis records, the body plate or a reputable catalogue tied to that car are better evidence than the model’s general history. The club describes the Silver Wraith as favored for formal limousines and state cars; that is a qualitative characterization, not a measured account of all buyers or bodies.
How did the Silver Wraith’s mechanical specification change?
Engine capacity and equipment changed during the production run, so a general model description should not be applied automatically to a particular chassis. Frank Dale Rolls-Royce & Bentley’s specialist model guide describes an initial 4,257 cc engine, later enlarged to 4,566 cc and then 4,887 cc in later cars. It also says automatic transmission became an option from 1953 and that the last cars had power-assisted steering. These are model-level guideposts from a specialist dealer, not a substitute for chassis-specific documentation.

Published production figures conflict. Frank Dale gives a total of 1,886 Silver Wraiths for 1946–1959. A Bonhams catalogue published in 2020 states that 1,144 short-wheelbase cars and 639 long-wheelbase chassis were built; those subtotals add to 1,783. The difference is 103 cars, and the available accounts do not establish why they disagree.

| 1,886 total Silver Wraiths | Frank Dale Rolls-Royce & Bentley; its guide gives a 1946–1959 production period, with publication year not stated. |
| 1,144 short-wheelbase cars | Bonhams auction catalogue, published in 2020. |
| 639 long-wheelbase chassis | Bonhams auction catalogue, published in 2020. |
| 1,783 combined | Arithmetic sum of Bonhams’ stated 1,144 and 639 subtotals; not a separate total stated by Bonhams. |
Bonhams says short-wheelbase production ceased in 1952 and the long-wheelbase version continued until the Phantom V’s introduction in 1959. The company’s heritage history confirms the Silver Wraith’s 1946 launch but does not establish an unambiguous final chassis date. Accordingly, 1947–1959 is the scope used here, not a precise factory model-year designation. See the Bonhams catalogue entry for its wheelbase and production statements.
Where can owners find technical information?
The Rolls-Royce and Bentley Technical Library, maintained by Richard Treacy for the Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club of Australia, is intended for enthusiasts worldwide. Its index includes a Silver Wraith and related-models section covering 1946–1955, and a separate archive listing shows a Silver Wraith parts list. The library index is a useful starting point, but the listing alone does not establish that a particular document is complete, currently accessible, or applicable to every chassis, especially cars from 1956–1959.
When researching an individual car, compare its chassis date, wheelbase, coachbuilder and body style with the records available for that specific example. A model-level overview can explain the range; it cannot settle a particular car’s original specification or provenance.
