1968 Dodge Bengal Charger: How a Cincinnati Dealer Created an Orange Special Edition

The 1968 Dodge Bengal Charger was a reported Cincinnati dealer special tied to the Bengals’ debut. Here is the documented paint story, the uncertain 50-car count, authentication checklist and the limits of its rarity and value claims.

The 1968 Dodge Bengal Charger was a dealer-associated special edition created for Cincinnati’s new Bengals football team. Secondary reporting says Tom Kneer of Kneer Dodge wanted Chargers in the team’s orange-and-black colors, then located an orange listed in Mopar’s fleet paint catalog after Dodge could not supply that shade as a regular passenger-car color. The reported paint was PPG #60326, a color used on Michigan state highway trucks.

That story explains why the Bengal Charger is unusual, but it does not prove the headline claim that it was the rarest 1968 Charger ever. The reported order was for 50 cars, while the number built, the number surviving and the authenticity of individual examples remain difficult to verify without Chrysler records or a complete registry.

What the 1968 Dodge Bengal Charger was

The Bengal Charger was not documented as a separate Chrysler production line in the material available for this article. It is better understood as a dealer-linked 1968 Dodge Charger special edition associated with Cincinnati, Kneer Dodge and the debut of the Bengals. The concept was straightforward: put the team’s orange and black colors on a new Charger and market the result locally.

Tom Kneer reportedly asked for Chargers in the team’s orange. Dodge’s normal passenger-car color offerings did not include the shade he wanted, so the dealer searched Mopar’s broader paint listings. The account says he found an orange used for Michigan state highway trucks and arranged a special order. The color is identified in that secondary account as PPG #60326.

That origin makes the Bengal interesting to historians. It also creates an important distinction: a car can be associated with the Bengal promotion without having been assembled by Chrysler as a factory-coded “Bengal Charger” package. Paint, stripes, badges and interior items may have been added or changed by a dealer. Each car therefore needs its own evidence.

How the orange paint story fits together

Why a truck or fleet color was considered

The reported problem was availability, not a technical inability to paint a Charger orange. Dodge’s regular passenger-car palette apparently lacked the precise Bengals shade Kneer wanted. The secondary article says the dealer turned to a Mopar paint catalog that included commercial and fleet colors, then selected PPG #60326, identified there with Michigan highway trucks.

“Painted with Dodge truck paint” is consequently a useful shorthand, but it should not be read as proof that a truck body or truck paint process was used on every Bengal Charger. The evidence supports a story about selecting a fleet-listed color for passenger cars. It does not include the original Chrysler order, a period paint-chip book or factory paperwork tying PPG #60326 to every car.

What can be established about PPG #60326

The PPG number comes from the reported dealer-history account, not from an authenticated Chrysler production document presented here. A restorer should record the code as a historical lead and then compare surviving paint under protected areas, invoices, photographs and any period correspondence. A modern color match that merely looks orange is not enough to establish Bengal provenance.

How many were made?

The commonly repeated figure is 50 cars. The account says Chrysler required an order of 50 cars before it would approve a custom color. It describes the Bengal project as a 50-car run, but the available evidence does not establish whether all 50 were completed, whether all were sold as Bengal Chargers, or exactly what the order terms required.

This distinction matters because a minimum custom-color order is not automatically a verified production total for a special edition. Some cars could have been ordered in the color without receiving Bengal graphics; others could have acquired the graphics later. Until primary order records or a reliable period registry are found, “50” should be presented as the reported order or run, not as a proven count of surviving, factory-documented cars.

Why “rarest 1968 Charger ever” is not a proven conclusion

The headline superlative goes beyond what the available records establish. No comprehensive comparison of every 1968 Charger variant, production total and authenticated survivor population was supplied. A model can be exceptionally scarce yet still not be demonstrably the rarest once undocumented dealer editions, export cars and low-production factory configurations are considered.

The same caution applies to the often-cited statement that only three original Bengal Chargers are known, including two R/T cars. That number was reported by Mecum and relayed by the secondary article; it was not independently verified through a registry in the available material. “Known” can mean cars recognized by a dealer, auction house or enthusiast network, not a complete census of every surviving example.

Claim What the available evidence supports What remains unproven
50 cars Secondary reporting describes a 50-car order or run tied to the custom-color requirement. Whether all 50 were completed, sold as Bengals or documented as a single factory package.
Three originals known Mecum reportedly said three original Bengal Chargers were known, two of them R/T cars. A complete registry count and the authentication standard used for “original.”
Rarest 1968 Charger The Bengal is plainly unusual and difficult to document. A comprehensive, model-wide comparison proving the superlative.

The documented Mecum example

The best-defined car in the available accounts is a 1968 Charger identified by VIN XP29HB345572. Mecum advertised it as one of the 50 orange cars associated with Kneer Dodge. The car was described as having a 383-cubic-inch V8, an automatic transmission, a black vinyl roof, a black bumblebee stripe, Bengal floor mats and a Bengal Charger fender badge.

Those details should be separated into two categories. The VIN, engine displacement and transmission describe the underlying Charger. The roof, stripe, mats and badge are edition-specific features described in the auction or secondary account, and the article itself notes uncertainty about which were factory-installed versus dealership additions. A badge or mat can support the story, but neither by itself proves that the body was painted PPG #60326 in 1968.

Item Reported detail How to use it when evaluating a car
VIN XP29HB345572 Match the stamped VIN, title history and surviving paperwork; do not rely on a reproduced tag alone.
Powertrain 383-cubic-inch V8 and automatic transmission Confirm the engine and transmission independently; these specifications do not establish Bengal identity.
Exterior Orange paint, black vinyl roof and black bumblebee stripe Inspect hidden paint areas and stripe application for evidence of period work or later restoration.
Interior and trim Bengal floor mats and Bengal Charger fender badge Treat them as supporting clues because dealership additions and reproductions are possible.
Auction result Mecum Kissimmee Lot S224 sold January 11, 2020 for $80,300, as recorded by CLASSIC.COM Use it as a historical transaction, not a current appraisal.

How to authenticate an alleged Bengal Charger

Because the edition may have been organized through a dealership rather than represented by a universally recognized Chrysler package code, authentication is a chain-of-custody exercise. The strongest cars combine period documents, consistent physical evidence and a traceable history.

  1. Start with the VIN and title trail. Photograph the VIN in the car, compare it with the title and registration history, and look for gaps, altered plates or numbers that do not match the body. A correct VIN identifies the Charger but does not, by itself, identify a Bengal.
  2. Separate factory data from dealer claims. Gather the broadcast sheet, fender tag, build sheet, window sticker, sales invoice and any correspondence. Mark which items are Chrysler records and which are later dealer or owner descriptions.
  3. Inspect original paint locations. Check door jambs, cowl areas, trunk gutters, under the vinyl roof, behind trim and other protected surfaces. Multiple layers of orange, evidence of a color change or a modern repaint may explain appearance without proving the original specification.
  4. Examine the stripe and roof work. Determine whether the bumblebee stripe was painted, taped or reproduced, and look for fastener marks or adhesive traces from a vinyl roof. These observations can establish when work occurred, but they cannot turn a later modification into factory equipment.
  5. Verify Bengal-specific parts. Photograph the fender badge, mats and any promotional emblems. Check casting, font, mounting holes and wear against period photographs or documented examples. Reproduction parts are common in collectible-car markets.
  6. Build a dated ownership timeline. Bills of sale, insurance photographs, service invoices, dealership advertisements and race or club records can connect the VIN to Cincinnati and the alleged Kneer Dodge sale. A timeline with no unexplained decades is more persuasive than a single undated letter.
  7. Ask for independent review. Before paying a rarity premium, have a marque specialist inspect the car and documents. Request a written list of what is original, what is restored and what is merely consistent with the Bengal story.

Hagerty’s 1968 Charger past-sales information provides broad historical context for the model year, not a Bengal-specific appraisal. A Bengal car can command a premium for documented history, but the premium depends on originality, paperwork, condition, mechanical specification and buyer confidence. An orange Charger with a badge and no supporting records should not automatically be valued like the Mecum example.

Buying and restoring one: practical risks

Do not confuse appearance with provenance

Orange paint, black graphics and Bengals-themed trim are visually persuasive and relatively easy to reproduce. A restoration that follows the reported story can be attractive without being an original Bengal. Sellers should describe the car as restored to Bengal style unless period evidence supports a stronger claim.

Budget for documentation, not just mechanical work

Engine rebuilding, bodywork and paint may be the visible costs, but the largest financial difference between an ordinary 1968 Charger and a credible Bengal example often lies in documentation. Preserve every invoice, photograph, removed part and paint sample. Record the VIN on each file and identify whether a component is original, period replacement, reproduction or unknown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Insure the car according to its evidence

Collectors considering a Bengal Charger should discuss agreed-value classic-car insurance with a specialist and provide the insurer with the same documentation used for the purchase. The policy value should reflect the car’s condition and substantiation, not an unsupported rarity slogan.

What a careful conclusion looks like

The defensible description is that the Bengal Charger was a Cincinnati dealer-associated 1968 Charger project linked to the Bengals, reportedly painted in a fleet-listed orange identified as PPG #60326 and reportedly limited to a 50-car order. A Mecum-described example with VIN XP29HB345572 demonstrates the kind of specification associated with the story, and its $80,300 January 2020 sale shows that a documented car can attract serious collector interest.

What cannot be stated as settled fact is that every one of 50 cars was completed as a Bengal, that only three originals survive, or that the Bengal is definitively the rarest 1968 Charger ever. Those conclusions require primary Chrysler records, period dealer documentation and a transparent registry of surviving cars.
