A credible 1967 Corvette purchase starts with identity and paperwork, not paint or a seller’s description. Confirm the complete VIN and its documents, then compare the trim tag, engine numbers, casting dates, factory records and the car’s physical condition. A lift inspection by a C2 Corvette specialist is essential because hidden frame, bird-cage and fiberglass repairs can cost more than visible cosmetic flaws.
What makes a 1967 Corvette worth checking carefully?
The 1967 model is the final year of Chevrolet’s 1963–1967 “mid-year” Corvette generation. Chevrolet’s 1967 vehicle information kit records 22,940 cars built. A model-year production table from Corvette Action Center breaks that total into 8,504 coupes and 14,436 convertibles. The same table lists 20 L88 cars and 16 L89 cars; those rarity figures come from that secondary production reference, not Chevrolet’s kit.

For a buyer, the important point is not simply that some versions are rare. A VIN identifies the body style, year, assembly plant and production sequence, but it does not prove which engine, transmission or special-option package the car left the factory with. Originality is an evidence chain: VIN, trim tag, engine and component numbers, dates, factory records, surviving features and an expert physical inspection must agree.

Useful visual checks include five-slot vertical vents behind the front wheels, deleted hood and fender emblems, a backup lamp above the rear license plate and a parking-brake lever moved to the center console. These details help identify a consistent car, but replaceable parts and restoration choices mean none authenticates a Corvette by itself.

Step 1: Verify the complete VIN before discussing originality
Read every character from the physical VIN tag and compare it with the title, registration, insurance documents and any previous invoices. Chevrolet’s 1967 ranges are:

A VIN outside the applicable range, a body-style code that conflicts with the car, or paperwork that uses a different sequence requires an explanation before you proceed. Ask a marque specialist to inspect the tag and its mounting area for disturbance, replacement, altered fasteners or other signs that the identification has been compromised. Do not treat a clean-looking tag as proof that the drivetrain is original.
What the VIN can and cannot tell you
- It can establish the model year, coupe or convertible body code, St. Louis assembly plant and sequence range.
- It cannot, by itself, establish the engine suffix, exact horsepower configuration, transmission, rare option package or whether today’s major components are factory-installed.
- It cannot prove “numbers matching” without corroborating engine, casting, date and documentary evidence.
Step 2: Read the trim tag in context
The 1967 C2 trim tag is located beneath the glovebox on the right-side hinge-pillar or cross-brace structure. It records body-style information, paint, trim and a body-date code. That date refers to a body-stage build point; it should not automatically be treated as the final vehicle assembly date.
Compare the tag’s body style, paint and trim with the car as it sits today. A repaint, color change or interior replacement is not automatically disqualifying, but it changes what you should expect to pay and what claims of originality can be supported. For a high-value authenticity dispute, use NCRS documentation or an experienced C2 specialist rather than relying on an online decoding chart alone.

Step 3: Establish the engine and major-component evidence chain
Chevrolet’s kit supplies 1967 engine suffix codes and block and cylinder-head casting references. Use those references together, not as isolated clues. Photograph the engine stamp, block casting number, head casting numbers, casting dates, transmission identification, differential markings and date codes before cleaning or replacing anything.
How to interpret an engine claim
- Record the complete engine suffix and any stamped sequence information exactly as found.
- Record block and head casting numbers and their dates, then compare them with the 1967 Chevrolet references for the claimed displacement and configuration.
- Check whether the date relationship is plausible for the body and assembly timeline. A plausible date does not prove the component stayed with the car.
- Compare the claimed engine configuration with the carburetion, intake, exhaust, ignition, transmission and other equipment actually installed.
- Request a written assessment from a specialist. A seller’s verbal statement that an engine is “matching numbers” is not documentation.
A matching sequence or correct-looking casting is one part of the chain. It does not, alone, prove that every claimed factory option is original, that the engine has never been rebuilt, or that a replacement component was not installed during the car’s life.
Step 4: Request independent factory-related records
NCRS states that it can provide GM Shipping Data Reports for 1962 Corvettes after VIN 6000 through 1975, along with factory-document validation and confirmations of NCRS car awards. Ask what is available for the specific VIN before assuming a report exists or contains every detail you want.
Compare any report with the VIN, trim tag, body style, colors, equipment and ownership history. Inconsistencies do not automatically prove fraud; they do mean the seller’s description needs additional evidence. NCRS judging manuals and technical publications are useful factory-detail references, and the NCRS Foundation catalog lists a “1953–1967 Corvette Specifications Guide, Volume One.” Catalog listing does not establish current stock, price or availability.

Put the Corvette on a lift: structural inspection priorities
A proper pre-purchase inspection should include cold-start observation, a lift survey, underbody photographs, chassis and suspension checks, brake assessment and a road test long enough to expose heat-related faults. The inspection should be performed by someone familiar with C2 construction, not only by a general used-car technician.
Frame, bird-cage and corrosion
- Inspect both frame rails for rust, thinning, kinks, weld repairs and section replacement.
- Check the rear crossmember and frame outriggers, including areas where moisture and road debris collect.
- Examine the bird-cage structure around the windshield, doors, roof and rear body mounts. Corrosion hidden beneath fiberglass can be structurally serious.
- Look for uneven undercoating, fresh paint over repairs, non-factory fasteners and repair seams that conceal previous damage.
- Photograph findings before negotiating; do not rely on memory or a seller’s verbal description.
Fiberglass body and alignment
- Check door, hood and deck-lid fit from several angles.
- Measure or visually compare panel gaps side to side; inconsistent gaps can indicate poor restoration, collision repair or structural movement.
- Inspect fiberglass around door hinges, headlamp openings, wheel arches and other stress points for cracks, ripples and repaired laminates.
- Look beneath the car and inside accessible panels for evidence that body alignment was forced to compensate for a damaged frame or bird cage.
Mechanical systems
- Inspect the engine for oil and coolant leaks, incorrect or damaged fittings, overheating evidence and poor-quality wiring repairs.
- Check the transmission, driveshaft, differential and axle seals for leaks and abnormal play.
- Evaluate steering, suspension bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings and spring condition.
- Inspect brake lines, hoses, calipers, rotors, parking-brake operation and signs of fluid contamination.
- Test charging, starting, lighting, gauges, wipers, horn, heater and other electrical equipment.
The inspection source does not provide a universal repair-cost estimate. Do not subtract a generic amount from an asking price for “frame rust” or “needs brakes”; obtain a written diagnosis and a repair estimate for this specific car.
Cold start, warm-up and road-test procedure
Arrange to see the car cold. Ask the seller not to start it before you arrive, and verify the engine and exhaust are at ambient temperature. A warm engine can hide hard starting, smoke, choke problems and oil-pressure behavior.

- Let the engine reach operating temperature while watching coolant temperature, charging voltage, oil pressure and leaks.
- Shut it off fully hot, wait briefly and attempt a hot restart. Heat-related starter, fuel or ignition faults often appear only then.
- Drive long enough to evaluate clutch or automatic-transmission operation, steering tracking, brake pull, vibration, gear noise and suspension response.
- Repeat the temperature check after the drive and inspect for fresh leaks. Ask the specialist whether compression or leak-down testing is warranted.
A short trip around the block is not an adequate road test for a collector Corvette. Agree in advance on insurance, route, weather and who will drive, and do not drive a car that is unsafe or improperly registered.

How to compare two or more 1967 Corvettes
Score every candidate on the same axes. A highly documented car with an older, honest restoration can be a better purchase than a shinier car with uncertain identity and hidden structural work.

There is no defensible current value range in the historical production and inspection information alone. Asking prices and auction results change by specification, originality, quality and market conditions; obtain fresh comparable sales before making an offer.
Common buyer mistakes and how to avoid them
Believing one visual feature authenticates the car
The five-slot vents, deleted emblems, rear backup lamp and console parking brake are useful consistency checks. They are also replaceable parts. Use them to generate questions, not to close the authenticity case.
Treating the trim-tag date as the assembly date
The trim tag’s date describes a body-stage event. It should be compared with, not substituted for, the vehicle’s full production and documentation history.

Assuming a correct casting proves a numbers-matching drivetrain
Casting numbers identify a component family. Suffixes, stamped sequences, dates, transmission and differential evidence, and records must be interpreted together.
Skipping the lift because the paint is attractive
Fiberglass can conceal movement, and undercoating can conceal corrosion or repairs. A lift inspection is a purchase prerequisite, not an optional final check.
Negotiating before documenting defects
Photograph each issue, obtain a specialist’s written assessment and separate safety repairs from cosmetic preferences. This gives you a factual basis for the offer and a plan if the deal falls through.

- ☐ Photograph and decode the trim tag, treating its date as a body-stage date.
- ☐ Record engine suffix, block and head castings, and all visible date codes.
- ☐ Compare claimed equipment with Chevrolet’s 1967 references.
- ☐ Ask NCRS what GM Shipping Data or validation services are available for the VIN.
- ☐ Arrange a cold-start inspection by a C2 specialist.
- ☐ Put the car on a lift and inspect frame, bird cage, outriggers and fiberglass stress areas.
- ☐ Check brakes, steering, suspension, cooling, electrical systems, leaks and drivetrain operation.
- ☐ Complete a sufficiently long road test, including a hot restart.
- ☐ Obtain photographs, written findings and repair estimates before negotiating.
When to walk away or pause
Pause the purchase when the VIN and title do not agree, the tag appears disturbed, the seller refuses a cold start or lift inspection, major identity claims rely only on verbal assurances, or structural corrosion is not accessible for inspection. A car can be made right, but you need to know whether you are buying a documented Corvette, a project, or an uncertain combination of parts.
Proceed only when the identity evidence, physical inspection and price are consistent with one another. If the seller cannot provide enough access or records to answer basic questions, treat that uncertainty as a condition of the car—not as proof of a rare specification.
