1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 1966 Ford Mustang came as a hardtop, convertible or fastback, with a choice of a 200-cubic-inch six or one of three 289-cubic-inch V8s, according to the model-year reference cited below. To identify one, distinguish the stamped VIN used for title and registration from the warranty plate on the driver-side door. And when comparing production figures, keep the 1966 model-year counts separate from Ford’s cumulative one-million-Mustang milestone in March 1966.
Why 1966 mattered in Mustang history
Ford introduced the Mustang publicly on April 17, 1964, after developing a car aimed at buyers drawn to sporty styling, accessible pricing and a wide range of options. Ford’s corporate history says more than 420,000 Mustangs sold in the first calendar year. It also reports that the one-millionth Mustang rolled off the Dearborn Assembly line on March 2, 1966. That milestone counts Mustangs built cumulatively since launch; it is not the 1966 model-year production total. Ford’s Mustang history also recounts that more than four million customers visited showrooms during launch weekend.
What engine came in a 1966 Mustang?
The 1966 model-year engine reference lists a 200-cubic-inch inline six and three 289-cubic-inch V8 versions. Its horsepower figures and engine codes are secondary-source specifications, not independently verified here against the original Ford specifications literature.
| Engine | Listed output | Engine code |
|---|---|---|
| 200-cubic-inch inline six | 120 hp | T |
| 289-cubic-inch V8 | 200 hp | C |
| 289-cubic-inch V8 | 225 hp | A |
| 289-cubic-inch V8 | 271 hp | K |
These figures and codes are listed by Ford Classics’ 1966 Mustang reference. Treat them as a guide when researching a car, and consult original Ford literature when a precise factory specification is important.

Which body styles and transmissions were offered?
The model-year reference lists three body styles, with standard and luxury configurations plus bench-seat versions of the hardtop and convertible. Its production counts are secondary-source figures, not Ford-confirmed totals.
| Body style and configuration | Listed production |
|---|---|
| Standard hardtop | 422,416 |
| Luxury hardtop | 55,938 |
| Bench-seat hardtop | 21,397 |
| Standard convertible | 56,409 |
| Luxury convertible | 12,520 |
| Bench-seat convertible | 3,190 |
| Standard fastback | 27,809 |
| Luxury fastback | 7,889 |
Ford Classics also lists three transmission codes: 1 for a three-speed manual, 5 for a four-speed manual, and 6 for the C4 Dual Range automatic. These are reference-code details; a plate can help identify a car’s recorded factory configuration, but it cannot establish that its present transmission or other components are original.

- Genuine Factory Part
How do I decode a 1966 Mustang VIN?
Start by finding the stamped identification number, not by treating the door warranty number as the VIN. Ford’s period shop manual says the Mustang’s official VIN for title and registration is stamped on the upper flange of the left front fender apron. The warranty plate is on the rear, lock face of the left front door. The manual specifically warns against using the warranty number on that plate for title or registration. See the Ford shop manual for its identification guidance.
- Locate the stamped VIN. Inspect the upper flange of the left front fender apron and record the stamped identification used for title and registration.
- Read the door warranty plate separately. The plate records factory information including body style, exterior paint, interior trim, build-date code, ordering district, axle ratio and transmission code.
- Compare the records with the car. Check that the stamped identification and plate are consistent with each other and with the vehicle’s visible configuration. A plate documents recorded factory details; it does not prove that every component now fitted is original.
- Use the right documentation for a decision. For title or registration, rely on the stamped VIN and the relevant vehicle-registration authority’s requirements, not the warranty number.
A plate is useful when researching the car’s original specification, but condition and authenticity of individual parts require inspection of the vehicle itself.

How many 1966 Mustangs were made?
Ford’s corporate history identifies a cumulative milestone—the millionth Mustang—rather than a verified 1966 model-year production total. The model-year counts above come from Ford Classics and should be described as that source’s figures, not as totals confirmed by Ford. Ford’s early aggregate sales and body-style statistics cover broader periods and should not be substituted for a 1966-only count.
That distinction matters when comparing figures: a production total needs a clear period label, such as model year, calendar year, or cumulative production since launch. The available sources cited here do not establish a separate primary-source total for 1966 model-year production.

What to check when comparing or restoring a 1966 Mustang
- Configuration: Compare body style, engine code, transmission and the door plate’s trim and other recorded details against period references.
- Identity: Treat the stamped VIN and warranty plate as different records with different purposes.
- Condition: Inspect the individual car; factory configuration does not establish the condition or originality of the parts currently installed.
- Service documentation: The period Ford shop manual covers diagnosis, repair, specifications and recommended special tools, making it useful for period-oriented service research.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell whether a 1966 Mustang is a fastback, hardtop or convertible?
Identify the body style visually, then compare it with the body-style information on the door warranty plate and a year-specific reference. The plate is evidence of recorded factory configuration, not proof that every part remains original.
Does the one-millionth Mustang mean one million were made in 1966?
No. Ford dates the one-millionth Mustang to March 2, 1966, as a cumulative milestone since the model’s 1964 introduction, not a 1966 model-year production figure.
