The 1980 Ducati TT Corsa Pantah was a short-lived racing development of the belt-driven Pantah, built for competition before the purpose-designed TT2 followed in 1981. Its story is best understood through a surviving auctioned example and the historical account attached to it: the record gives identifying numbers and a reported 583/597 cc specification, while its racing figures and provenance are claims reported by the auction house rather than independently established factory documentation.
What was the 1980 Ducati TT Corsa Pantah?
It was a competition version of Ducati’s Pantah Desmo V-twin, associated with the 1980 Italian National Junior Championship. RM Sotheby’s auction history says the belt-driven Pantah made its competition debut that year. The 1980 machines were based on the 500SL Pantah frame, distinguishing them from the dedicated frame developed for the next season’s TT2.
The term “TT Corsa Pantah” is tied here to a specific motorcycle listed by RM Sotheby’s in its Monaco sale. The auction record identifies that example as a 1980 Ducati TT Corsa Pantah and gives its frame number as DM500SL/661095 and engine number as DM350L/600629. The specification is written as “583/597 cc SOHC Desmo V-twin single, five speeds”; the two displacement values are both retained in the record, so neither should be treated as the definitive capacity of this particular bike. How was the 1980 racing version developed?
Frame, bodywork and suspension
According to the auction description, Franco Farne built four factory motorcycles for the Italian National Junior Championship, reportedly using the 500SL Pantah frame. The bikes are described as having red-and-yellow bodywork resembling the outgoing 900NCR and Marzocchi racing suspension. The count of four is qualified in the source as reported, not presented as a verified factory production record.

Engine and reported performance
The same auction account says Farne bored the engines to 583 cc and that they produced 70 horsepower at 9,800 rpm. These are historical figures attributed to RM Sotheby’s description of the 1980 competition motorcycles; they are not independent factory specifications confirmed here. The lot’s “583/597 cc” wording for the individual auctioned example adds uncertainty about its precise displacement.
Reported championship results
RM Sotheby’s names Vanes Francini, Paolo Menchini and Guido Del Piano as riders and reports five wins in seven events in the Italian National Junior Championship. Those results describe the program as presented in the auction account; they should not be generalized into a claim that every TT Corsa example achieved the same record.

How did the 1981 TT2 differ?
The TT2 was the next development, not another name for the 1980 TT Corsa. RM Sotheby’s says Fabio Taglioni designed the TT2 frame for construction by Verlicchi. The auction account gives that frame’s weight as 18 pounds and describes the TT2 engine as 597 cc, producing 76 horsepower at 10,750 rpm.
The same source credits Massimo Broccoli with the 1981 Italian TT2 Championship, Tony Rutter with the World F2 championship in 1981 and 1982, and Walter Cussigh with every race in the 1982 Italian F2 series. These later specifications and achievements belong to the TT2 account and should not be assigned to the 1980 TT Corsa.

What does the surviving auction record establish?
The Monaco 2012 listing documents one identified example, its frame and engine numbers, the auction house’s stated specification, and a sale result of €11,700. That is a historical result for that lot, not a current valuation or a reliable guide to what another TT Corsa Pantah should cost.
The listing also reports the seller’s claim that the offered motorcycle had been ridden by Vanes Francini in the 1980 Italian Junior Series. This is seller-reported provenance relayed by RM Sotheby’s, not independently verified rider history. The auction record is useful evidence for what was represented about this example, but its descriptive history does not by itself establish every detail as an official Ducati factory record.
