Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A bike design can rethink more than its frame: it can change how you fold and carry it, how you sit or stand, what powers it, or what it can transport. An 18-design roundup published by Interesting Engineering on November 18, 2020, mixed concepts with more familiar bicycle types. Its examples are best read as a snapshot of design ambitions—not as a current catalogue of available bikes.
What makes these bike designs different?
The 2020 roundup covered 18 entries, ranging from a land-and-water concept to folding commuters, unusual riding positions, utility cycles and experimental frames. Some were concepts or prototypes; the roundup does not establish that every design reached production or remains available. The useful question is what each design tries to change.
Portability and commuting
Backpack bike
Chang Ting Jen’s competition entry was designed to fold into a backpack, addressing a familiar multimodal commute: ride part of the way, then take the bike onto public transit or carry it indoors. The source describes a design idea, not a currently verified product.
YikeBike
The roundup describes the YikeBike as a compact electric bike with a rear-wheel motor, rear-reaching handlebars and a foldable format. Its unusual proportions prioritize compactness over the familiar diamond-frame layout.
#1 Best Overall
KESPOR K7 and STRiDA
The KESPOR K7 is presented as a conventional folding-bicycle example for storage and commuting. STRiDA takes a more distinctive route: Mark Sanders’ A-shaped folding design is described in the article as using a belt drive. Those are descriptions in the 2020 article, not confirmation of current specifications, listings or regional availability.
Different ways to ride and propel a bike
Halfbike
Halfbike puts the rider upright, uses a large front wheel and combines pedaling with steering. The roundup attributes speed and commute-range claims to the company; it does not provide independent test results. The core design idea is a compact standing ride rather than a conventional seated bicycle.
ElliptiGo
ElliptiGo adapts the elliptical trainer’s stepping motion to an outdoor cycle. Instead of sitting and turning ordinary pedals, the rider stands and uses a longer elliptical stride. The roundup presents this as a different riding movement, not evidence of a particular fitness or medical benefit.
Lopifit walking bike
Lopifit puts a treadmill-like belt beneath a standing rider, who propels the bike by walking. The article’s speed description is not a verified test figure, so the distinguishing feature is the walking-based propulsion, not a guaranteed pace.
Rank #2
- A bike‑shaped metal wall décor with distressed rust finish, featuring front handlebars, half wheel, and a basket that appears to emerge from the wall
- Perfect for Rustic, Industrial, or Vintage décor, adding playful character and nostalgic charm to living spaces
- Use it to display small items or wrap the basket with battery‑operated lights, creating a fun and functional focal point
- Made of durable metal construction, designed to last while maintaining its weathered, vintage look
- 17.0"L x 8.25"W x 30.0"H
Bird of Prey
John Aldridge’s Bird of Prey is a recumbent design that places the rider low and nearly face down. The 2020 article associates the position with reduced spinal strain and higher speed, but supplies no independent clinical or performance testing. Those are design claims, not established outcomes.
Access, stability and carrying people
Four-wheel bikes
Quad-cycle layouts replace two wheels with four and can be configured with passenger or cargo utility in mind. The roundup frames the format around stability and carrying capacity, but gives no comparative safety test. Four wheels alone do not establish that a design is safer in every setting.
Mobo Mobito
The Mobo Mobito is described as a child’s cruiser steered by two joysticks; the article also points to an adult version. That steering arrangement makes it visually and mechanically distinct from a handlebar-led bicycle. Current availability and a rider’s suitability cannot be inferred from the old roundup.
Northwoods tandem
A tandem lets two riders share one bicycle, making it a straightforward alternative for paired recreational rides or touring. The roundup names a Northwoods tandem but does not establish current model specifications or availability.
Rank #3
- We have two colors for you to choose:Silvery and Red copper.
- Strong body and highly stable when on display.
- Mini size,it won't take up much of your place.
- High-quality plated finishment surface, delicate and smooth, full of metallic lustre.
- Great decorative exhibition on your desk, office table or whatever place where you can have a comfortable view of it.
Materials, form and experimental engineering
Bamboo bicycle
A bamboo frame makes the material itself part of the design proposition: a visibly different alternative to familiar metal or composite frames. The roundup highlights renewable material and appearance, but does not provide lifecycle comparisons that would support a quantified sustainability claim.
Cardboard bike
Izhar Gafni and Cardboard Technologies developed a prototype described as using cardboard and recycled plastic. The roundup also reported a projected launch and price in 2020; those were forecasts at the time, not evidence of a launch, present-day price or current availability.
DiCycle
Amsterdam design firm GBO’s DiCycle was described as a conceptual land-and-water hybrid with two large wheels. Its appeal is the attempt to make one vehicle work across two environments; the article explicitly treated it as a concept.
EBIQ
Yuji Fujimura’s EBIQ concept was pictured in a credit-card-like form and paired with an idea for carrying and charging a laptop. These features belong to a concept description, not a verified commercial specification.

Mini-penny
Krank-Boom-Clank’s mini-penny reinterprets the penny-farthing as a rideable sculpture made with recycled material. The roundup cautions against riding it at speed, underscoring that visual experimentation and practical everyday cycling are not the same design goal.
HMK 561
Ralf Kittmann’s HMK 561 was presented as a carbon-fiber, motorbike-like concept with a system said to store braking energy. That technical description comes from the roundup; it is not independent validation of the engineering or its performance.
Forkless or Phantom bike
Olli Erkkilä’s forkless concept replaces conventional front forks with a curved frame and a one-sided steering arm. It challenges the familiar visual structure of a bicycle, while the source does not establish production status or real-world performance.

VAN RYSEL FTP²
VAN RYSEL says its concept projects explore design and technology and help guide product creation, describing them as “guides in the creation process of each VAN RYSEL product” (VAN RYSEL Concepts Lab). Its FTP² page calls the prototype “a true rolling laboratory, unconstrained by current industrial standards.” The company describes an operational prototype with an integrated motor and battery, custom cockpit, and aerodynamic frame and fork elements; it says some innovations may inform future road bikes. These are the maker’s descriptions and intentions, not independent performance findings (VAN RYSEL FTP²).

Canyon Predict
In an announcement dated June 18, 2026, Canyon described Predict as a prototype road-bike system intended to detect hazards and group-riding dynamics through a 360-degree sensor array and integrated display, with a connected smart-helmet concept. These are intended capabilities, not demonstrated accident-prevention results (Canyon’s Predict announcement).
Peugeot Onyx
The Peugeot Onyx concept takes an aerodynamic, time-trial-oriented approach. Stellantis Design Studio describes a carbon-fiber monocoque with cables, brakes and electronic shifting integrated into the design. Its focus is component integration and streamlined form rather than a new riding posture (Stellantis Design Studio’s Onyx page).
Giant Tensio
Giant presents Tensio as a design language for its road, mountain and fitness bikes, spanning industrial and graphic design. The example shows how a design project can shape the look and feel of a product range rather than introduce an entirely different kind of bicycle (Giant Tensio).
Which design idea fits which need?
| Design priority | Examples | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Carry or store a bike easily | Backpack bike, YikeBike, KESPOR K7, STRiDA | Folding format and, in the backpack entry, a design intended for carrying between transit legs. |
| Change posture or motion | Halfbike, ElliptiGo, Lopifit, Bird of Prey | Standing, elliptical, walking-based or low recumbent riding positions. |
| Carry riders or cargo | Four-wheel bikes, Northwoods tandem | Passenger or cargo utility, or shared riding for two. |
| Experiment with materials or form | Bamboo bicycle, cardboard bike, mini-penny, forkless concept | Alternative frame material, sculpture-like styling or a departure from conventional frame geometry. |
| Explore integrated technology or aerodynamics | FTP², Canyon Predict, Peugeot Onyx | Prototype propulsion and controls, intended sensing, or aerodynamic component integration. |
These categories describe design aims, not proof that one format is safer, faster, more sustainable or better for every rider. The roundup’s inclusion of an entry also does not confirm that it can be bought today.
