Elon Musk said in May 2025 that Tesla may have lost some left-leaning buyers but gained buyers on the right, and that sales were strong. Tesla’s reported figures show a more mixed picture: deliveries fell sharply year over year in the first quarter of 2025, and automotive sales revenue declined for the full year. Yale researchers estimated that Musk’s politics had a substantial effect on U.S. sales, but that figure is a counterfactual estimate—not a count of verified lost customers. Later delivery growth shows a rebound, not what caused it.
What Musk said about Tesla demand
At the Qatar Economic Forum on May 20, 2025, Musk addressed concerns that his political activity was driving away Tesla customers. He said: “So yes, we’ve lost some sales perhaps on the left, but we’ve gained them on the right. The sales numbers at this point are strong, and we see no problem with demand.” CNBC’s report of the remarks records his response as a claim about an offset between buyers, not a quantified breakdown of Tesla sales by political leaning.
That distinction matters: Musk acknowledged a possible loss among one group while asserting that buyers elsewhere made up for it. He did not provide figures isolating either effect. His May 2025 reassurance is a dated statement, not evidence of Tesla’s current demand.
What Tesla’s reported figures show
First-quarter deliveries fell year over year
Tesla reported 336,681 vehicle deliveries in Q1 2025, compared with 386,810 in Q1 2024—a decline of about 13%. It produced 362,615 vehicles in Q1 2025. The company said Model Y line changeovers across all four factories caused several weeks of lost production during the quarter. Tesla’s Q1 2025 production and delivery release supplies those totals and the operational context.

Deliveries are completed vehicle handovers, not a direct measure of underlying demand. Tesla itself cautioned in the release that deliveries are only one measure of financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.
Full-year revenue also weakened
In its 2025 Form 10-K, Tesla reported that automotive sales revenue fell $6.66 billion, or 9%, compared with 2024. The company attributed the decline in part to approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price, which it linked to sales mix and higher customer incentives. Revenue and deliveries answer different questions. A delivery total does not capture price, sales mix, or incentives; revenue movement does not identify why a buyer did or did not choose a Tesla. These company disclosures document weaker results, but they do not isolate a political effect.
What the Yale estimate does—and does not—mean
Yale researchers examined how Democrats and Republicans responded differently to Musk’s political activity, including changes in Tesla purchases and in choosing Tesla over other electric vehicles and hybrids. Their analysis found a reversal in Democratic buying trends after Musk bought Twitter in October 2022, while Republican trends did not show the same reversal. The researchers said they sought to account for other factors, including increased competition and the lack of new models. Axios reported the working paper’s estimate as 1 to 1.26 million fewer U.S. Tesla sales over October 2022 through April 2025 than the researchers’ counterfactual scenario. That is a model-based estimate of what might have happened without the political shift, not an audited tally of individual customers or a figure Tesla reported. Some industry analysts questioned the estimate’s magnitude. Co-author Kenneth Gillingham told Axios that Tesla had planned production and delivery capacity above the counterfactual sales impact and had to ramp back growth when sales flattened. Axios’s report on the estimate and analyst skepticism includes that exchange.
The study supports the case that politics may have affected buying behavior; it does not establish that politics alone caused Tesla’s sales changes. Product age, stronger competitors, factory disruption, incentives, and policy changes can also affect results.

Why the sales picture cannot be reduced to one cause
- Political reaction: Musk acknowledged a possible loss among left-leaning customers, and the Yale analysis estimates a political effect. Neither provides a company-verified count of buyers lost specifically for political reasons.
- Production disruption: Tesla said Model Y factory changeovers cost several weeks of production in Q1 2025.
- Products and competition: Yale’s researchers identified Tesla’s aging lineup and stronger competition as plausible influences alongside politics.
- Pricing and incentives: Tesla linked its 2025 revenue decline partly to lower average selling prices and higher customer incentives.
- Policy changes: Expiring U.S. tax credits were another factor in the broader sales environment, but the cited figures do not quantify their separate effect on Tesla.
These explanations can overlap. A weak quarter or lower revenue is observable; assigning a precise share of the change to Musk’s politics requires a causal estimate, with assumptions and uncertainty, rather than a simple comparison of totals.

The Associated Press reported that Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in Q2 2026, up 25% from the same quarter of 2025. AP’s July 2, 2026 report documents the year-over-year rebound. It changes the trend context, but one stronger quarter does not show whether political backlash ended or explain what drove deliveries higher.

So the most defensible answer is qualified: the evidence is consistent with politics hurting Tesla sales, and Yale researchers estimate a sizable effect, but it does not prove that Musk’s political activity was the sole or precisely measurable cause of the company’s weaker periods. Musk’s claim that right-leaning buyers offset any losses is also not supported by a quantified public breakdown in the cited evidence.
