These 13 models are sensible reliability candidates for U.S. shoppers, but the available evidence does not establish a ranked list of the cheapest cars to repair or guarantee that any one will avoid a large bill. Reliability studies track reported problems, not an individual car’s future repair costs. Use the model examples below as a shortlist, then check the exact model year, service history, condition, and inspection results before buying.
What reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ December 2025 report placed Lexus, Subaru, and Toyota at the top of its brand reliability rankings for 2026. Its analysis drew on survey data covering about 380,000 vehicles. The organization also cautions that reliability can vary by model and that redesigns can affect results. Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability report discusses the findings.
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measured problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles. The study’s industry average was 204 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); Lexus led premium brands at 151 PP100, and Buick led mass-market brands at 160 PP100. PP100 is a problem-rate measure, not a repair-cost total. The study named the Lexus IS its top overall model and recognized multiple Toyota Motor Corporation models. Read J.D. The model examples below draw on those current brand and model findings, plus J.D. Power’s award listings. They are not a verified ranking by repair expense: these sources do not provide model-specific repair-cost comparisons for all 13 choices. A dependable model can still be costly to fix after a collision, neglect, or component failure.

13 reliability-minded models to put on your shortlist
These are candidates to research, not a promise that every year or trim has the same reliability. The cited evidence spans different model years and survey methods, so compare the year you are shopping with the source’s coverage before deciding.

The last three rows deliberately identify candidate groups rather than inventing model names unsupported by the cited material. Before choosing a specific car from any group, confirm that its exact year appears in the underlying source and compare its history with the vehicle you are considering.

How to use these examples without mistaking reliability for repair cost
Check the model year, not just the badge
Survey results are tied to particular populations and years. J.D. Power’s 2026 study examines three-year-old vehicles, while its 2025 awards page refers to 2022 model-year vehicles. Those findings are useful context, but they do not rate a new 2026 vehicle. Consumer Reports says its 2026 analysis found model-by-model differences and noted redesign effects.
Consumer Reports’ Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing, said: “Our surveys continue to show that the slow and steady approach to vehicle redesigns pays dividends for reliability, while more aggressive changes and the introduction of new technologies often lead to setbacks.” Consumer Reports advises reliability-conscious shoppers to avoid newly introduced or newly redesigned vehicles in their initial model year; treat that as guidance, not a guarantee that a carryover model will be trouble-free. Compare the exact powertrain and use
J.D. Power’s 2026 study reported 237 PP100 for battery-electric vehicles, 213 PP100 for hybrids, and 198 PP100 for gas-powered vehicles. Those are reported dependability problem rates across powertrain categories, not lifetime ownership-cost comparisons. A powertrain’s fit depends on how you drive, charging or fueling access, and the specific model’s evidence—not on those figures alone.
Inspect the individual used car
A strong model record cannot reveal whether a particular used car was maintained, damaged, or driven hard. Request service records, check for open recalls, and consider an independent pre-purchase inspection. Review the inspection findings and estimated repair needs before agreeing on a price; no model-level survey can substitute for that vehicle-specific evidence.

Habits that can help prevent avoidable repair surprises
- Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual for the exact year and powertrain.
- Address warning lights, unusual noises, leaks, or changes in braking and steering promptly rather than letting small symptoms linger.
- Keep dated service records with mileage. A maintenance log book can make that record easier to organize, but the book itself does not prevent failures.
- When comparing cars, ask for invoices or other documentation rather than relying only on a seller’s verbal description.
Consumer Reports’ guidance on vehicles reaching 200,000 miles or more is based on member-survey data about which vehicles most often reached that distance. It recommends beginning with a model that has a favorable safety, road-test, and reliability history, then maintaining it properly.
