13 “Different” Cars That Are Secretly the Same—At Least Under the Skin

Different badges can hide shared platforms, components, or development. These 13 pairings show why “same underneath” depends on the model year, market, and parts you mean.

Some cars with different badges share a platform, major components, or development; a few are close relatives, while others are more loosely connected. That does not make them identical: engines, tuning, equipment, body styles, and specifications can vary by year, trim, and market.

What does “the same car” actually mean?

It can mean several different things, and those distinctions matter. A rebadged model is a close identity match sold under another name. Platform or architecture sharing means vehicles use a common underlying design, but does not establish that their parts or specifications match. Cars developed together may share components without being interchangeable, and a shared engine family does not necessarily mean identical engine equipment or calibration.

The pairings below are examples of relationships reported for these models, not a guarantee that every generation, trim, or market version shares the same parts. Use the model year and the specific component—not just the badge—to check a claim.

Which differently named cars are related?

Models Reported relationship What the relationship does not establish
Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ Reported to share basic architecture, engines, and components, with the MKZ positioned and equipped as a more upscale model. That every Fusion and MKZ year has the same engine, equipment, or component fitment.
Geo/Chevrolet Prizm and Toyota Corolla The Prizm is described as closely related to the Corolla; both are reported to have been built at NUMMI. That all model years or trims are identical, or that a component from one automatically fits the other.
Porsche Boxster and Cayman These mid-engine Porsche models are described as siblings with substantial parts commonality. The Boxster is a roadster and the Cayman a coupe. That their body structures, equipment, or specifications are identical across every generation.
Chevrolet SS and Holden Commodore VF They are described as international siblings, with shared LS3 powertrain content reported for the pairing. That every market version has the same powertrain specification or equipment.
Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice Both are reported to use GM’s Kappa platform. That their trim, styling, tuning, or parts are identical.
Audi RS Q8 and Lamborghini Urus The reported connection is Volkswagen Group MLB Evo architecture and a twin-turbocharged V8, alongside distinct styling and tuning. That the models have the same calibration, equipment, or full specification.
Honda Passport and Isuzu Rodeo The 1990s Passport is described as a rebadged Rodeo with major components in common. That the claim applies to later vehicles carrying the Passport name, or that every part is interchangeable.
Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne They are described as related SUVs sharing core architecture, with different tuning and equipment. That a shared architecture makes their handling, trim, or component lists the same.
Mercedes-Benz X-Class and Nissan Navara/Frontier The X-Class is described as based on Nissan’s pickup, with chassis, suspension, and drivetrain elements in common. That all market versions or model years share every drivetrain or suspension component.
Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute They are described as platform and powertrain siblings from a Ford–Mazda collaboration. That the pairing has identical engines, equipment, or specifications in every year and market.
Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, Pacifica, and Voyager These names are grouped as part of a Chrysler minivan family across different model eras. That they represent one fixed design or specification. The names span generations, and their relationships must be checked by year.
Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra They are reported to share platforms and engine options while differing in styling, equipment, and positioning. That same-year trims have identical standard equipment or that every engine option is shared.
Scion FR-S, GT86, Toyota 86/GR86, and Subaru BRZ The family is described as sharing chassis and mechanical elements, with tuning differences noted. That all names refer to one unchanged specification: the models span different badges, generations, and years.

Why related cars can still feel and function differently

Shared foundations leave room for meaningful differences. Manufacturers can tune steering, suspension, and power delivery differently; choose different interiors and equipment; and offer distinct body styles. A convertible and a coupe can share substantial hardware while differing in structure and use. Even when two vehicles share an engine or platform, the precise parts and specifications can vary with trim, production year, and sales market.

That is why “same underneath” is a starting point for comparison, not a parts-compatibility verdict. A platform relationship does not by itself tell you whether a suspension part, transmission, engine component, or electronic module will fit.

How to check whether two used cars are genuinely comparable

  1. Pin down the exact vehicles. Record model year, generation, trim, engine, drivetrain, and original sales market. Names such as Passport, Pacifica, and 86 have been used across different eras.
  2. Identify the specific claimed overlap. Is it a platform, engine, transmission, suspension component, or a rebadge relationship? A broad claim of shared architecture is not proof of common parts.
  3. Check the relevant part or specification by vehicle. Use manufacturer parts information or a qualified parts professional to confirm fitment using each vehicle’s exact year and configuration.
  4. Compare the equipment and condition individually. Check the actual trim, options, service history, mileage, and inspection findings rather than assuming the better-known relative has equivalent features or upkeep.
  5. Compare current local prices on a like-for-like basis. A shared platform does not establish that one badge is cheaper or a better value. Compare similar years, trims, condition, mileage, and equipment in your market.

When the connection is useful—and when it is not

Knowing that vehicles are related can help you form a shortlist, understand why their layouts or components resemble one another, and ask more specific questions when checking a used car. It is not enough to choose between them, predict repair costs, or order a part. Those decisions require vehicle-specific evidence.
