What’s different about driving in North America vs. Europe? The main difference is that neither region has one set of rules: the side of the road, speed limits, required equipment, and licence and insurance requirements depend on the countries and jurisdictions on your route. Check the rules for each destination before you drive, rather than relying on a regional generalization.
What changes about driving on the road?
1. Which side of the road you drive on
Do they drive on the left or right in Europe? It depends on the country. EU guidance identifies Cyprus, Ireland, and Malta as countries where traffic drives on the left; elsewhere, the side of the road and the vehicle’s steering position may differ from what you are used to. Check each country on your itinerary and take extra care at junctions and when entering or leaving a road.
2. Speed units and posted limits
Do not assume speed limits or units are consistent across either region. EU guidance says limits vary by road and vehicle, while the US Department of State advises travelers to research local traffic laws. Before setting off, check the official rules for each country, state, or province, including the units shown on signs and any limits that apply to your vehicle or road type. The available guidance does not support a complete region-wide comparison of speed units or numerical limits.
3. Signs and motorway navigation
Road signs and motorway layouts require local familiarization. As a UK-specific example, the GOV.UK motorway guide describes numbered junctions, advance exit signs, and lane-drop layouts. Those conventions are useful to learn if you will drive in the UK, but they should not be treated as a template for every European country—or for all North American roads. Review the destination’s official road guidance and your route before driving.

4. Junction priority and turning rules
Do not carry assumptions about right turns on red, priority at junctions, or four-way stops from one jurisdiction into another. Rules can vary, and a region-wide comparison is not reliable. Check the official traffic rules for each place you will drive, especially at intersections where signs or signals may be unfamiliar.
5. Roundabouts
Roundabouts are not a sound basis for a blanket claim about either region: their prevalence and entry rules are not established uniformly. At a specific roundabout, follow local signs, signals, and lane markings. If you are unsure how a destination handles priority or lane choice, consult its official road guidance before you encounter one.

6. Motorway and freeway lane practices
Do not assume passing etiquette or enforcement is the same across North America or Europe. Learn the rules for the country or jurisdiction where you will drive, and follow posted signs and markings. The UK motorway guidance is a useful destination-specific reference, not evidence of a single European practice.
Which local rules and preparations should you check?
7. Alcohol limits
There is no single European alcohol limit. EU guidance says limits differ among member countries, and some countries do not allow any alcohol in a driver’s blood. Check the destination’s current legal limit and any stricter rule that applies to your circumstances; do not rely on a limit remembered from home or another country.

8. Required vehicle equipment
Some destinations require equipment that may not be routinely carried in your home jurisdiction. GOV.UK gives reflective jackets and warning triangles as examples of items required in some destinations. Check the exact requirements for every country on your route, including where equipment must be kept or used. Those examples are not a universal kit list.
9. Lights and winter tyres
Lighting and winter-tyre rules vary by country. EU guidance notes national variation in daytime-running-light and winter-tyre requirements; its rental guidance also says winter tyres may be compulsory in some countries during certain months. Check the rules for your travel dates and route, and confirm whether a rental vehicle will meet them.

For single-voltage devices, a separate voltage converter is required.
10. City emissions restrictions and permits
Some European cities require an emissions sticker or permit to drive in designated areas; GOV.UK notes that arrangements may need to be made weeks ahead. This is not a rule for every European city. Check your destination’s official local guidance before driving into a restricted area, and allow time to obtain any required permit.
11. Driving licence and International Driving Permit
Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive in Europe? There is no one answer for every visitor and destination. The US Department of State says some countries accept a US licence and many require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Check the specific country’s requirements for your nationality, obtain an IDP if required, and carry your underlying driving licence as well.

12. Insurance and rental-car cross-border terms
Do not assume your home auto policy covers driving abroad. The US Department of State warns that US policies may not cover foreign driving and that accepted coverage may still fail to meet local requirements. For an EU rental, EU guidance says third-party liability insurance valid across EU countries should be included in the rental price. Tell the rental company about every country you plan to enter and check the contract for cross-border permission, insurance documentation, and breakdown cover; coverage and terms should not be assumed beyond the route and policy stated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two destinations before a trip
The US Department of State’s Driving and Transportation Safety Abroad page, last updated August 11, 2025, states: “You are subject to local traffic laws and regulations while visiting or living abroad.” Use official guidance for each place on your route to check:
- Which side of the road to use and whether your vehicle is set up for it.
- Speed units, posted limits, and rules for your road and vehicle.
- Junction and roundabout priority, turning rules, and motorway guidance.
- Alcohol limits, required equipment, lighting, and seasonal tyre rules.
- City permits or emissions restrictions that apply to your route.
- Whether your licence, any required IDP, insurance, and rental agreement cover the full trip.
For a US driver, the Department of State’s travel guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for the destination’s current rules. EU guidance is relevant to EU countries; UK guidance is specific to the UK. For travel elsewhere in Europe or North America, check the responsible local authority for that jurisdiction.
