Several national parks make realistic road trips from Phoenix, from Saguaro’s two Tucson-area districts to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. Others—including Mesa Verde, Bryce Canyon, and Joshua Tree—are better treated as extended drives or multi-day trips. The list below is a Southwest-focused selection, not a distance ranking: official Phoenix-origin road figures are available for only some parks, and the route, entrance, and starting point can change the mileage.
How to choose a Phoenix national park road trip
Start with the kind of trip you want, not a mileage ranking. A shorter drive may suit a weekend, while parks farther north or west are more rewarding when you can spend several days on the road. Before setting out, confirm the route to the entrance or district you plan to visit, current road conditions, seasonal access, and any shuttle or operating requirements with the park.
- For a relatively close park experience: Saguaro is near Tucson, about 100 miles south of Phoenix, but its two districts are separate destinations.
- For a classic Arizona multi-day trip: The Grand Canyon’s South Rim and Petrified Forest both have official Phoenix-origin route figures, though Petrified Forest mileage varies by where in Greater Phoenix you start.
- For a longer Southwest loop: Joshua Tree, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Mesa Verde, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, White Sands, and Death Valley call for more route planning. Treat them as extended drives unless a current route planner shows otherwise for your itinerary.
Road mileage is not the same as straight-line distance, and a park may have widely separated entrances or districts. Do not use a park-to-park distance as if it were a Phoenix-to-park route.
12 national parks to consider from Phoenix
1. Grand Canyon National Park
The South Rim is the clearest choice for a first Grand Canyon drive from Phoenix. The National Park Service lists Phoenix at 231 miles by its described route and calls the drive approximately four hours. Those figures refer to the South Rim approach, not every destination in the park. Grand Canyon National Park: South Rim directions.
#1 Best Overall
The North Rim is not a quick side trip from the South Rim. The NPS says the two rim villages are about 212 road miles and 4.5 hours apart; the route goes around the canyon rather than across it. Check seasonal access before planning a North Rim visit. Grand Canyon National Park: directions.
2. Saguaro National Park
Tucson is about 100 miles south of Phoenix, placing Saguaro among the most practical park outings on this list. But Saguaro is not one drive-through site: its East (Rincon Mountain) and West (Tucson Mountain) districts are about 30 miles and 45–60 minutes apart. Choose a district based on your plans, or allow time to travel between them. Saguaro National Park: directions.
Rank #2
3. Petrified Forest National Park
The official Phoenix mileage depends on your starting point in the metro area. The NPS lists 259 miles via I-17 and I-40 from north or west Greater Phoenix, and 215 miles by state highways from eastern Greater Phoenix. Use the figure that matches your origin, then check the route and park access before leaving. Petrified Forest National Park: directions.
4. Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree is about 222 miles west of Phoenix according to the NPS, making it an extended drive for many travelers. Navigation deserves particular care: the park warns, “Do not rely on GPS directions to navigate to or within Joshua Tree National Park!” A navigation app may send drivers onto rough or impassable backcountry roads. Check the park’s recommended approach and carry a road map; a map does not replace checking current closures. Joshua Tree National Park: directions.

5. Zion National Park
Zion is a plausible stop on a longer Utah-and-Arizona road trip, but the available mileage in this guide is a regional connection, not a Phoenix route: the NPS lists Zion’s east entrance at 78 miles from Bryce Canyon. Do not use that figure to estimate the drive from Phoenix. Choose the Zion entrance that matches your itinerary and confirm current access and shuttle requirements with the park. Bryce Canyon National Park: directions and regional distances.
6. Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce Canyon fits naturally into a southern Utah loop with Zion. The NPS lists Zion’s east entrance 78 miles away and the Grand Canyon’s South Rim 300 miles away; both are park-to-park figures, not Phoenix-origin distances. Plan a separate route from Phoenix and allow for the distance between parks if combining them. Bryce Canyon National Park: directions and regional distances.
Rank #4
7. Mesa Verde National Park
Mesa Verde is an extended drive north of Phoenix. Its NPS mileage page gives two Phoenix routes: 443 miles via the Navajo Trail or 480 miles via Holbrook and Show Low. Because the figures describe different routes, compare them against your actual starting point and current conditions rather than treating either as a universal drive distance. Mesa Verde National Park: directions and distances.
8. Arches National Park
Arches belongs on a longer Utah road trip, often paired regionally with Canyonlands. The available official mileage information identifies nearby Colorado Plateau parks, but does not establish a comparable Phoenix-to-Arches route. Check the drive to your intended entrance using a current route planner, then verify park access and any time-sensitive entry requirements directly with the NPS.

9. Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands is a multi-district park, so the destination matters as much as the park name: different districts call for different routes and trip plans. Regional proximity to other Colorado Plateau parks does not establish a Phoenix driving distance. Choose the district you want to visit and route specifically to it; check current road conditions and services before travel.
10. Capitol Reef National Park
Capitol Reef is another extended-drive candidate for a Utah parks itinerary. The available regional figures do not provide a like-for-like Phoenix-to-entrance distance, so calculate a current route from your actual origin rather than inferring mileage from the park’s neighbors. Check the NPS for current road status and seasonal conditions as your date approaches.
11. White Sands National Park
White Sands can be considered for a southern New Mexico road trip from Phoenix, but no comparable Phoenix-origin mileage is established here. Route to the park entrance with a current planner, and check the NPS for access conditions that could affect your travel day.
12. Death Valley National Park
Death Valley is a substantial western road-trip option, and its size makes the chosen entrance and destination within the park important. No comparable Phoenix-to-entrance mileage is established here. Plan the specific route and overnight stops, then check current road conditions and park notices before departure.

Park directions can be more reliable than blindly following a navigation app, especially where backcountry roads or changing conditions are involved. Petrified Forest NPS says, “In this area, a regular map is better than using GPS.” A printed regional map or road atlas can provide useful context if service is limited, but it cannot show every live closure.
Quick Recap
- Pick the exact destination. Specify the rim, district, entrance, or park area—not just the park name.
- Compare routes from your actual Phoenix-area starting point. This is essential where the NPS mileage varies by metro-area origin, as it does for Petrified Forest.
- Check official park notices close to departure. Confirm road status, seasonal access, operating conditions, and any shuttle or entry rules relevant to your date.
- Build in time for the park itself. A route estimate gets you to an entrance, not through a large park or between separated districts.
