MotorTrend’s April 2023 list of “cheap” cars with at least 400 horsepower names eleven models, despite its headline promising ten. It reported 400–485 hp and new-car base prices of $37,295–$59,775 at the time. Those are historical figures—not current used-car prices or a reliable 2026 affordability ranking.
Which 400-hp cars did the 2023 list include?
The table reflects the horsepower ratings and base prices reported by MotorTrend in April 2023. Prices are the article’s new-car base prices from that period; they should not be read as today’s asking prices. MotorTrend’s article is the source for every rating and price below, and the figures have not been independently confirmed here.

How the cars differ beyond horsepower
The list mixes very different ways of delivering power: turbocharged V6s, naturally aspirated V8s, a plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric cars. That matters more to daily use than a small gap in peak horsepower alone.

- For a manual transmission: the source specifies a six-speed manual for the Nissan Z, Mustang GT, Camaro LT1 and entry Challenger R/T Scat Pack. It describes the Mustang’s 10-speed automatic as optional.
- For all-wheel drive: the Tesla Model 3 Performance and Polestar 2 Dual Motor are described as all-wheel drive. The Q50 Red Sport 400 is rear-wheel drive standard, with all-wheel drive optional.
- For four-door practicality: the list includes sedans such as the Lexus IS 500, Infiniti Q50, Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 and Volvo S60, as well as coupes and other performance-car formats. Compare passenger and cargo needs separately from power.
- For gasoline V8 power: the Lexus, Dodge, Mustang and Camaro entries use V8s as described in the article. The Nissan and Infiniti entries use twin-turbo V6s.
How to judge what one costs today
A 2023 base price cannot establish which of these cars is cheapest to buy used now. Some listed trims may no longer be offered new in the same form, and current used values depend on the exact model year and trim as well as mileage, options, condition and location. Kelley Blue Book notes that the final sale price can vary with a vehicle’s actual condition and local market conditions.
For a meaningful present-day comparison, price the same model year and trim in your area using the mileage, equipment and condition of the specific car. Kelley Blue Book’s valuation guidance identifies year, make, model, mileage, ZIP code, style, options and condition as inputs for a private-party value. Edmunds offers separate current estimates for trade-in, private-party and dealer-retail values. Do not assume the Camaro remains the least expensive used choice just because it had the lowest historical new-car base price in MotorTrend’s article.

What to check before buying a used example
Horsepower does not tell you whether a particular car has been maintained well or suits your needs. Before deciding, compare the exact trim and model year, service history, mileage, equipment and local value. Kelley Blue Book advises buyers that they can take a used car to their own mechanic or use an independent inspection service.
- Confirm the model year, trim, transmission and driven wheels; names such as “Scat Pack” cover configurations that may differ.
- Check the vehicle’s history and service records, then compare its condition and mileage with similar local examples.
- Arrange an inspection by a mechanic you choose or an independent inspection provider, and factor any findings into your decision.
