If you want a used Toyota RAV4 with a strong case for reliability and everyday mileage, start your search with the 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 model years. These are promising years to consider, not guarantees of a trouble-free vehicle: a specific car’s maintenance, condition, mileage, configuration, and recall history matter more than its model year alone.
Among them, the 2018 is a supported reliability candidate, while the 2015–2016 and 2017-and-newer models also appear in a 2024 safety-and-reliability recommendation. Those sources use different criteria, so treat them as useful starting points rather than a definitive ranking for every buyer.

The IIHS and Consumer Reports list, published May 22, 2024, combines safety performance with above-average reliability for most years in the selected range. It places 2015–2016 RAV4s built after November 2014 in Good Choices, and 2017-or-newer RAV4s in Best Choices. Why the 2018 RAV4 stands out
Autoblog says it considered the severity of complaints alongside overall complaint and recall counts, then selected the 2018 RAV4 as its reliability pick. Its article reports 33 issues logged on Car Complaints, three NHTSA recalls, and a J.D. Power quality and reliability rating of 88/100. That evidence makes 2018 a reasonable year to put near the top of a search, not an objective winner for every shopper. A well-maintained example from another shortlisted year may be a better buy than a neglected 2018, and a lower asking price can be offset by needed repairs or maintenance.
Recall checks for shortlisted RAV4s
2019–2020: check for applicable campaigns
Toyota’s January 28, 2021 campaign document lists certain RAV4s and hybrids for issues including potential front lower suspension-arm separation, possible loss of power-steering assist, and certain engine blocks that could lead to engine failure, stalling, or fire risk. These descriptions apply to vehicles covered by the campaigns, not every 2019 or 2020 RAV4. Toyota’s campaign requirements document includes the listed campaigns and their applicability details.

2013–2018: verify the battery-related recall
An Associated Press report in 2023 said Toyota’s recall covered nearly 1.9 million U.S. RAV4s, involving certain 2013–2018 vehicles whose replacement 12-volt batteries could move during forceful turns and short circuit. The reported dealer remedy included a new hold-down clamp, battery tray, and terminal cover. The campaign did not necessarily cover every vehicle in those years. Read the Associated Press report.
Use the NHTSA recall lookup to check the VIN, then ask the seller for repair paperwork and confirm completion with a Toyota dealer if necessary. Do not buy a replacement part or assume a repair is needed based on model year alone; establish the VIN applicability and outstanding work first.

How to choose between two RAV4 listings
Use the year shortlist to decide where to look, then compare actual vehicles on factors that affect reliability, running costs, and value:
- Service history: Prefer clear, consistent maintenance records over a low-mileage claim with little documentation.
- Mileage and use: Consider mileage alongside evidence of how the vehicle was maintained, rather than treating a lower odometer reading as proof of better condition.
- Accident and repair history: Review available records and have questionable repairs or damage assessed independently.
- Configuration: Compare trim, engine, hybrid status, and drivetrain. A recommendation for a model year does not mean every version has the same features or maintenance needs.
- Inspection: Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have the inspector assess the car’s overall condition, including tires, brakes, and signs of neglected maintenance.
- Recall completion: Check the VIN and request documentation for completed campaigns.
- Total cost: Compare the asking price with current local listings and account for insurance and any immediate maintenance. IIHS and Consumer Reports advised getting an insurance quote for the specific vehicle.
The values included with the 2024 recommendations are historical, not current price guidance: Kelley Blue Book supplied an average U.S. value of $14,700 for the earliest eligible RAV4 in the 2017-or-newer Best Choices list, and $12,000 for the 2015–2016 Good Choices entry, rounded to the nearest $100. Those figures were supplied for April 19, 2024; use current local market data when assessing a listing.

- Search first among the six model years, while remaining open to a better-maintained vehicle outside the list.
- Compare trim, engine, hybrid status, drivetrain, mileage, and service records across the listings you are considering.
- Run each candidate’s VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask for evidence that applicable work is complete.
- Arrange an independent inspection and obtain an insurance quote for the exact vehicle.
- Choose based on the individual car’s condition and total cost, not the year label by itself.
