For shoppers using 2025 as their frame, the strongest source-backed picks are the BMW M235i/M240i, Chevrolet Corvette C6, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86, and Volkswagen Golf GTI. They suit different kinds of drivers, but none is automatically a bargain: Edmunds grouped them in a 2026 feature about used performance cars under $25,000, an editorial category rather than a guarantee of today’s local price or condition. This guide focuses on what each does well, what to check, and how to judge value beyond the asking price.
What makes a used performance car a bargain?
A low asking price is only the starting point. Value depends on the car’s driving character and equipment, its condition and service history, and the costs likely to follow: fuel, insurance, tires, maintenance, and repairs. Age, mileage, modifications, trim, location, and timing can change the calculation substantially. Car and Driver’s used-car rankings likewise weigh factors such as acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment, and advise shoppers to account for age, mileage, and condition. The five picks below are the models directly identified in Edmunds’ June 10, 2026 feature on used performance cars in an under-$25,000 editorial category. That bracket is not a current price survey, and it does not establish that every example is overlooked or available at that price. Check local listings and compare cars of similar year, trim, mileage, and condition. Edmunds’ five used performance cars for less than $25,000, via AP News.
Five used performance cars worth a closer look
1. BMW M235i and M240i (2015–2018)
These compact six-cylinder coupes combine quick acceleration with balanced handling and the comfort to cover distance. Edmunds lists the M235i at 320 hp and the 2017–2018 M240i at 335 hp. In the feature’s market frame, the earlier M235i is easier to find below $25,000. The compromise is a cramped rear seat; this is best treated as a driver-focused coupe, not a practical family car.

- Check before buying: Service documentation, signs of deferred maintenance, and whether modifications have been made. The source does not establish reliability rates or specific common failures for these years.
2. Chevrolet Corvette C6 (2008–2013)
The C6 offers a front-engine V8, rear-wheel drive, strong braking, relatively low weight, and highway comfort. Edmunds cites output of up to 430 hp and recommends focusing on 2008-and-newer examples for the added power and improved interior. Its cabin remains a weak point compared with the car’s performance; inspect it in person and decide whether the materials and layout work for you.
- Best fit: A shopper prioritizing V8 sports-car performance over cabin polish or extra seats.
- Check before buying: Look for a documented maintenance history and have the car inspected for condition and signs of neglect.
3. Mazda MX-5 Miata (2019–2021)
The Miata’s appeal is its lightweight, two-seat roadster format, precise steering, and predictable handling—not headline power. Edmunds lists 181 hp for these model years and recommends 2019-and-newer cars for the power increase and telescoping steering wheel. A six-speed manual is available, and Edmunds favors the Club trim for its mechanical enhancements. Tall drivers should check cabin fit before committing.

- Country of origin : China
- Designed for cars, pickups, and SUVs with very limited operating clearance around the drive tires
- Fast easy installation with no need to move the vehicle
- Designed-in rubber tightener means there is no need to stop and retighten after installation
- Best fit: Someone seeking an engaging open-top drive and willing to trade passenger and cargo space for it.
- Check before buying: Sit in the exact car, test the steering-wheel and seat adjustment, and verify the trim and transmission rather than assuming equipment from the model name.
4. Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 (2017–2020)
These related rear-drive coupes emphasize a direct, mechanical feel. Edmunds says the 2017 update brought gearing and suspension improvements, with output up to 205 hp. The Toyota 86 is often slightly cheaper in the source’s market frame; BRZ Performance-package examples add upgraded brakes and suspension. The modest power figure is part of the trade: the case for these cars rests on their handling character rather than straight-line speed.
- Best fit: A driver who wants a focused, rear-drive coupe and values handling feedback over power.
- Check before buying: Confirm year, package, and equipment. Review service records and look closely for heavy modifications or signs of hard use.
5. Volkswagen Golf GTI (2015–2019)
The GTI pairs lively handling with four-door hatchback practicality, making it the most utility-minded choice here. Depending on year and package, Edmunds lists output up to 228 hp and both manual and automatic transmissions. SE and Autobahn trims add equipment that can include a limited-slip differential and upgraded brakes, so compare the specific car’s specification rather than treating all GTIs as alike.

| Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 | Related rear-drive coupes with a connected feel | Up to 205 hp after the 2017 update | Toyota 86 often slightly cheaper; BRZ Performance package adds brake and suspension upgrades |
| Volkswagen Golf GTI | Practical four-door performance hatchback | Up to 228 hp, depending on year and package | SE and Autobahn equipment can include a limited-slip differential and upgraded brakes |
Specifications and character descriptions in the table are from Edmunds’ 2026 feature. “Up to” figures are not a promise that every car in the listed year range has that output.
Other candidates—and why this is not a ten-car ranking
A title promising ten models would require comparable support for ten distinct choices. The available model-specific material directly supports five model groups, so adding five cars simply to fill the count would overstate what is established. Two additional candidates appear in Edmunds’ 2025 guide, but its figures are dated and do not establish current bargain prices.

- Note-Chains should be fitted to tire before actual use. Fitment can be affected by age of tire, tire manufacturer and/or tread type
Fiat 124 Spider (2017–2020)
Edmunds’ February 28, 2025 guide included the 124 Spider in its under-$20,000 section. It describes a lightweight chassis broadly related in layout to the ND-generation Miata, but with its own 1.4-liter turbo engine: 160 hp and 184 lb-ft in Classica and Lusso trims, or 164 hp in Abarth trim. The guide reported an average price of $18,815 at publication; that is a historical guide figure, not a current quote. Edmunds’ 2025 best used sports cars guide.
Subaru WRX (2016–2019)
The same 2025 Edmunds guide also lists the WRX, describing a 268-hp turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive. It may appeal to a buyer who wants a performance-oriented sedan and all-weather traction, but the guide’s inclusion does not establish today’s local price or the condition of any particular car. Confirm the specific vehicle’s equipment and history.

How to evaluate one in your local market
- Compare like with like. Gather local listings for the same model year range, trim, transmission, and broadly similar mileage. Treat an editorial price bracket as a starting point for shopping, not evidence that an asking price is fair.
- Check the exact specification. Confirm engine output, transmission, package, and equipment from the specific car’s records and listing. Power and features can vary by year and trim.
- Review the maintenance history. Ask for service records and look for gaps or evidence of deferred maintenance. Edmunds specifically recommends a maintenance-record history for the C6 Corvette and advises avoiding neglected or heavily modified cars.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the particular car’s condition. A clean listing or appealing specification cannot substitute for an inspection.
- Estimate ownership costs, not just the purchase price. Account for fuel, insurance, replacement tires, maintenance, and repairs. Kelley Blue Book notes these cost categories in its sports-car buying guide; its displayed 2025 examples use national averages and should not be read as an individualized estimate.
- Decide whether the car fits your use. Consider passenger space, cargo capacity, ride comfort, fuel efficiency, and how often you will use the car as intended. A two-seat roadster, compact coupe, Corvette, and hatchback solve different problems.
What “overlooked” can—and cannot—mean
“Overlooked” is a useful shopping lens, not a verified claim about market-wide demand or resale value. The cited sources identify appealing performance traits and editorial price categories; they do not establish that these models are undervalued across regions, that every example is inexpensive, or that one will appreciate. Car and Driver’s rankings also change over time, and its page cautions readers to consider a vehicle’s age, mileage, and condition. Use the model ideas to build a shortlist, then let the specific car’s condition, equipment, local price, and expected costs decide whether it is a bargain.
