The Model S has evolved from a large-screen electric sedan built around Autopilot hardware, over-the-air software and Supercharging into a substantially redesigned car with distinct standard and Plaid performance versions. Tesla identifies 2021 as a major redesign, but the decade’s changes did not arrive as one verified upgrade per year. Here are ten useful ways to understand the evolution—and what current specifications do, and do not, tell you about it.
1. The touchscreen grew into a defining cabin feature
Tesla’s 2015 Form 10-K described a 17-inch touchscreen as the Model S’s driver interface. The current US Model S page lists a 17.4-inch first-row touchscreen and a 9.4-inch second-row touchscreen. These are measurements from different product eras, so they show how Tesla presents the cabin today—not a like-for-like measurement of a single screen’s growth. 2. Driver-assistance hardware went through generations
Tesla said Model S vehicles began receiving Autopilot-enabling hardware in October 2014. In October 2016, it began equipping vehicles with a newer suite of cameras, sensors, radar and onboard computing hardware that Tesla described as capable of supporting Full Self-Driving features. That wording describes the hardware’s intended capability, not an autonomous car. Autopilot and related functions are driver-assistance systems; drivers must remain attentive and responsible. 3. Software updates became part of the ownership timeline
Tesla uses over-the-air (OTA) updates to deliver software to vehicles after delivery. That means some vehicle functions can change without a workshop visit, though updates do not guarantee that every Model S receives the same features: eligibility can depend on hardware and configuration. 4. Charging became an ecosystem, not just a plug
Tesla’s ownership materials cover home and mobile charging as well as Supercharging, and the current US Model S page promotes route planning that includes charging stops. The 2021-and-newer service manual describes the Wall Connector as an optional permanent home installation. Charging speed and range added vary with factors including charger type, battery temperature, state of charge and conditions; a route estimate is not a guarantee of arrival range or charging time. 5. The 2021 redesign created a clear generation divide
Tesla identifies 2021 as a major redesign year, citing a new powertrain, chassis, body and interior design. Its service documentation likewise separates Model S manuals for 2012–2020 and 2021 onward. That makes 2021 a practical dividing line when comparing equipment, repair information or used cars, though a model year alone does not reveal every option or hardware detail. 6. Plaid made extreme performance a central version of the lineup
The current US page lists the standard Model S at 670 hp and 3.1 seconds from 0–60 mph; Model S Plaid is listed at 1,020 hp and 1.99 seconds. Tesla describes Plaid as a tri-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration with torque vectoring. These are current manufacturer figures, not independently measured comparisons across ten years. 7. Range figures require a matched comparison
Tesla currently lists EPA-estimated range of 410 miles for the standard Model S and 368 miles for Plaid in the US. The same page cautions that actual range depends on configuration and driving and environmental factors. Those figures cannot establish a precise increase over a 2016 Model S: a fair comparison would need matching trims, wheels and test cycles, none of which are established here for a decade-spanning comparison. 8. The interface now serves rear passengers too
The current US specification lists a 9.4-inch touchscreen for the second row in addition to the 17.4-inch first-row display. It is a notable current cabin feature, but the available documentation here does not establish the model year in which the rear display entered the lineup. Tesla’s current US Model S page.

Tesla currently highlights refined aerodynamics, a wider stance, staggered wheels and tires, and adaptive driving headlights. These describe the present product, rather than a verified sequence of dated improvements across the full decade. 10. The evolution combines major refreshes with ongoing refinements
The 2021 redesign was a substantial product change; Tesla’s later Plaid Track Mode development and OTA software delivery are different kinds of updates. Treating every feature addition as a new generation—or assigning one major change to every year—would overstate what the documented milestones establish. The clearest picture is a car shaped by both a major hardware and design reset and continued product and software refinements. How to compare a decade-old Model S with a current one
For a useful comparison, identify the specific car rather than relying on the Model S name alone. Check its generation and model year, trim and motor configuration, driver-assistance hardware, cabin equipment, charging setup, and range test cycle. For range, compare the same wheels and test standard where possible, and keep official estimates separate from real-world results.
