If your budget is $25,000, the strongest performance-car options are used cars—not a guaranteed set of ten models you can find at that price in every market. This shortlist combines five current recommendations from an Edmunds feature republished by the Associated Press in June 2026 with five additional candidates, but year, trim, mileage, condition and title history determine whether any specific car fits your budget. Check local listings and have a used car inspected before you buy.

How to choose a performance car under $25,000

Start with the kind of performance you want. A powerful coupe can deliver quick acceleration and comfortable highway miles; a lightweight roadster can feel lively at legal speeds without matching that power; and a hot hatch can combine engaging handling with useful cargo space. Horsepower is only one part of the decision.

That distinction shows up in Edmunds’ 2024 comparison of a 2024 Mazda Miata, Subaru BRZ tS, Honda Civic Si and 2023 Hyundai Elantra N. The Miata, BRZ tS and Elantra N each recorded 0–60 mph in 6.4 seconds in that specific test, while the Civic Si recorded 7.7 seconds. The comparison also found different distinctions in autocross and handling. Those are results for the listed newer models and trims, not predictions for the older used cars below.

  • Driving feel: Consider steering, balance and handling—not only straight-line acceleration.
  • Everyday use: Decide whether you need rear seats, a hatchback, a convertible or a two-seat cabin.
  • Configuration: Output and equipment can vary by model year and trim; check the exact car’s specifications.
  • Condition: Review service records and the vehicle’s history, and arrange an independent inspection.

Five current recommendations

These five models are featured in Edmunds’ used-performance-car recommendations, republished by AP on June 10, 2026. The prices are not guaranteed: check current local listings for the exact year, trim and condition you want.

1. BMW 2 Series: quick acceleration with coupe comfort

Look at 2015–2018 six-cylinder M235i and M240i models. The cited output ranges from 320 hp in the M235i to 335 hp in later 2017–2018 M240i versions. Edmunds describes quick acceleration, balanced handling and long-distance comfort. Coupes are easier to find below $25,000 than convertibles or higher-performance later trims, but a low asking price should prompt careful attention to condition and maintenance.

2. Mazda MX-5 Miata: light, precise and open-air

The 2019–2021 Miata makes 181 hp, according to the AP-republished feature. Its two-seat convertible layout and light weight make handling and steering a central part of the appeal. Edmunds recommends 2019-and-newer examples for the power increase and telescoping steering wheel, and identifies the Club trim’s mechanical enhancements. Taller drivers may find the cabin cramped. Edmunds describes the current Miata as “a milestone for light, fun convertibles.”

Used Cars
  • A brash, fast-talking used car salesman wants to leave the business world and enter politics. First, though, he must help his boss save his used car lot from being taken over by his malicious and unscrupulous brother, who runs a rival used car lot directly across the highway.

3. Subaru BRZ or Toyota 86: a small, driver-focused coupe

The co-designed BRZ and 86 are compact coupes with small rear seats better suited to cargo than regular adult passengers. Post-2017 versions make up to 205 hp and received improved gearing and suspension tuning, according to the feature. Toyota 86 examples are often slightly cheaper; a BRZ Performance package adds brake and suspension upgrades. Compare the specific car’s equipment and history rather than assuming the badge alone determines value.

4. Volkswagen Golf GTI: performance with hatchback practicality

The 2015–2019 GTI pairs a four-door hatchback with entertaining handling. Its turbocharged four-cylinder makes up to 228 hp, depending on year and equipment; transmission options also vary by model year. It is the most utility-minded choice in this group if you want performance alongside a practical cargo area.

5. Chevrolet Corvette: prioritize records and condition

For a Corvette below this budget, coupes are easier to find than convertibles or later Grand Sport trims. Edmunds advises narrowing the search to 2008-and-newer models for more power and an improved interior, and recommends finding an example with maintenance records. Because equipment and condition vary, verify the particular car’s service history and have it inspected.

Five additional candidates for your search

The models below broaden the shortlist, but the available evidence does not establish that any particular year or trim is currently available below $25,000 in your area. MotorTrend’s list is older and useful here as a source of candidate models, not as evidence of today’s prices. iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking also names a 2020 Subaru BRZ as its best used sports car under $25,000 and includes a Ford Mustang convertible and Hyundai Veloster N in its under-$25,000 sports-car list. Ranking inclusion does not guarantee a qualifying local listing.

6. Honda Civic Si: a manual-friendly sport compact to consider

The Civic Si appears among the additional candidates identified by MotorTrend and in Edmunds’ newer-car comparison. The comparison’s 7.7-second 0–60 mph result belongs specifically to the 2024 Civic Si in that test; it should not be used to predict the acceleration of older Si models. Check the exact year’s equipment, transmission and condition, and test-drive it to judge whether its driving character suits you.

7. Ford Focus ST: a hot-hatch candidate

MotorTrend’s older list includes the Focus ST as an affordable performance-car candidate. Its hatchback format is worth considering if you want a more practical body style than a coupe or roadster. The cited sources do not establish a current price for a particular year or trim, so verify local listings and inspect the car’s maintenance history.

8. Honda S2000: a roadster worth checking carefully

The S2000 is another roadster candidate from MotorTrend’s older list. Treat it as a model to investigate rather than a promise of an under-budget purchase: the available evidence does not establish current local asking prices. Check condition, service documentation and title history on any example you find.

9. Chevrolet Cobalt SS: an older performance compact

MotorTrend also identifies the Cobalt SS. It offers a different route into a performance-oriented compact than the newer GTI and Focus ST, but the old list’s historical pricing cannot establish what a sound example costs today. Pay particular attention to the individual car’s condition and records.

10. Hyundai Veloster N: a newer ranking pick, not a guaranteed budget fit

iSeeCars includes the Veloster N in its 2026 list of used sports cars under $25,000. That ranking makes it worth searching, but does not guarantee that a suitable car is available at that price in your market. Confirm the listing’s year, trim, mileage, condition and title status before treating it as a fit.

Check the specific car, not just the model name

  1. Search by year and trim. Output and equipment differ across model years and configurations, especially for the BMW 2 Series and GTI.
  2. Compare the full listing. Account for mileage, condition, title history, included equipment and location; a model appearing in a ranking is not proof that every example meets your budget.
  3. Review service records. Records help you understand how the specific car has been maintained. They are especially important when considering a Corvette, for which Edmunds explicitly recommends finding documented maintenance.
  4. Arrange an independent inspection. A listing description or code reader cannot establish that a used performance car is mechanically sound. Have a qualified mechanic assess the vehicle before purchase.
  5. Test-drive for your use case. Check that the cabin, seating, cargo space, transmission and driving feel work for you—not just that the car is quick.
