The Toyota Century SUV is a four-seat, plug-in-hybrid addition to Toyota’s chauffeur-focused Century line. Toyota unveiled it in Japan on September 6, 2023, alongside plans to continue the Century sedan. Here are 10 useful facts about its design, specifications and launch-era pricing—and what Toyota’s announcement does not establish about buying one today.
1. It joined the Century sedan; it did not replace it
Toyota unveiled the SUV on September 6, 2023, began accepting orders that day and planned to launch it in Japan during 2023. The company said the Century sedan would remain available, making the SUV an addition to the range rather than a successor to the sedan. These are launch-announcement details, not confirmation of current sales status. Toyota’s September 6, 2023 launch announcement is the source for the specifications and plans in this article.
2. The concept is chauffeur-focused, but owners can drive it
Toyota framed the SUV around “The Chauffeur.” Its stated design goal was to give rear passengers a place to rest or hold online meetings while travelling. Toyota also said the vehicle could be driven by its owner, so the chauffeur-oriented layout does not rule out owner-driving.
At the September 6, 2023 premiere, Toyota design chief Simon Humphries described the model’s position this way: “Century sits at the tip of Toyota’s vision for chauffeur-driven mobility.” The statement reflects Toyota’s positioning, not an independent assessment of the vehicle.

3. It seats four, not five
The Century SUV has four-person capacity, according to Toyota’s published specifications. Toyota listed the sedan at five-person capacity. The SUV’s four-seat layout suits its emphasis on rear-passenger comfort, but it gives up one passenger place compared with the sedan.
4. It is shorter than the sedan, but wider and taller
Toyota’s 2023 specifications show a taller, wider SUV with a shorter wheelbase and overall length than the sedan. The figures below are manufacturer-published, not independent measurements.

5. It is a plug-in hybrid
Toyota specifies a series-parallel plug-in hybrid system with a 3.5-liter 2GR-FXS V6 engine, an electric continuously variable transmission and E-Four Advanced all-wheel drive. The company described everyday battery-electric operation and hybrid use on longer trips as the intended way to use the system. Its 2023 announcement did not give an electric-only range or fuel-economy figure, so neither can be inferred from that description.
6. Rear-seat entry and comfort are central to the design
Toyota highlighted several features intended to make rear-seat use easier and more comfortable:

8. Rear steering and braking assistance are intended to smooth the ride

For the launch, Toyota said Century Meisters—salespeople and engineers familiar with the brand—would work at select dealerships. It also said customers would be able to customize body color and interior, with details to follow. The 2023 announcement does not establish what customization choices, if any, are available now.
What is known about availability outside Japan?
Toyota’s cited launch announcement concerns Japan. It does not establish whether the Century SUV is currently sold outside Japan, what inventory exists, or what delivery times and order terms apply in 2026. Anyone considering a purchase needs current confirmation from Toyota or a local dealer rather than relying on the 2023 launch plan.
