That matters especially in 2026: Toyota calls the new RAV4 a sixth-generation model, and its U.S. lineup is hybrid or plug-in hybrid, unlike the broader mix described for 2025.
1. Start with the model year and generation
The 2026 RAV4 is a generation change. Toyota identifies it as the sixth generation and says the U.S. lineup is offered as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, with drivetrain availability varying by grade. A 2025 or older RAV4 belongs to a different product mix, so do not assume its engines, equipment, or trim comparisons carry over. For any candidate, confirm the model year and trim on its window sticker or vehicle documents. Compare cars of the same generation when possible; if you are comparing across generations, make the differences in powertrain and equipment part of the decision.
2. Match the powertrain and drivetrain to your needs
RAV4 specifications vary by year, grade, and drivetrain. Toyota’s 2025 hybrid information describes a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid system, electronically controlled CVT, and electronic on-demand AWD. Toyota also describes other configurations elsewhere in its 2025 RAV4 lineup. Verify the exact vehicle’s window sticker rather than relying on a listing that gives only “RAV4” or “hybrid.”

Think about whether you need the specific drivetrain and features on the car you are considering. AWD availability and equipment differ by grade; a model name alone does not establish that a vehicle has AWD or a particular feature.
3. Read fuel-economy figures as estimates, not promises
Toyota lists the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid at 219 net combined horsepower and up to 39 EPA-estimated combined mpg. The same model information cites up to 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway for the referenced configuration. These are model-page maximums and estimates, not guaranteed results for every trim or in real-world driving. 4. Check safety ratings for the exact model year
Do not treat a RAV4 safety rating as a single blanket score across years or crash tests. For the 2025 RAV4, IIHS reports Good ratings for the small overlap front test and whiplash prevention, Marginal for the updated moderate overlap front test, and Acceptable for the updated side test. IIHS lists blind-spot detection as optional. Review the 2025 IIHS RAV4 ratings and confirm which driver-assistance features are installed on the individual car.
5. Inspect the used vehicle’s history and condition
Ask for maintenance records and a vehicle history report, then arrange an independent inspection by a qualified mechanic. A history report can help you identify reported events, but it does not establish the vehicle’s current mechanical condition. Toyota lists a free vehicle history report among its Certified Used Vehicle benefits; that is useful documentation, not a substitute for inspecting the car. 6. Check recalls by VIN
Recall status is specific to the vehicle, so look up the exact VIN before purchase. Ask the seller for documentation of completed recall repairs and confirm any open recalls through the NHTSA recall lookup or Toyota’s recall lookup. A model-year search or a general listing is not a complete answer for the car in front of you.
7. Verify hybrid battery warranty eligibility
Toyota says qualifying Toyota hybrids beginning with model year 2020 have hybrid battery coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to warranty terms. For a used hybrid, check its first-use date, current mileage, and records; the model year alone does not tell you how much coverage remains. 8. Compare certified-used coverage with the car’s price and condition
Toyota’s certified-used program offers Gold and Silver coverage with different warranty benefits. Read the written terms for the specific vehicle and compare the added coverage and price premium with its history, condition, and any remaining factory warranty. Certification and an inspection are useful parts of the decision, but they do not remove the need to review the car itself. Program details are available from Toyota Certified Used Vehicles.
9. Compare actual equipment, not just trim names
Features can vary by model year, grade, and drivetrain. Toyota’s model information shows variation in AWD availability, safety and multimedia equipment, cargo capacity, and ground clearance. For the 2025 RAV4, Toyota lists up to 8.6 inches of ground clearance and up to 69.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity; those maxima should not be assumed for every version. 10. Compare the full cost for the specific vehicle
There is no useful universal price or ownership-cost figure for every RAV4: the sources here do not establish current transaction prices, insurance costs, financing costs, or local dealer fees. Get written purchase and financing quotes for the exact vehicle and location, and obtain an insurance quote before committing. When comparing new and used options, include condition, mileage, remaining coverage, and equipment alongside the quoted price.
