Yes, tourists can drive the Nürburgring Nordschleife in an eligible car during scheduled tourist-drive sessions—but it is not a casual sightseeing road. The 20.8-kilometre circuit has 73 corners, major elevation changes and blind sections, and its opening hours, access rules and track conditions can change. Here are ten practical things to know before you go.
1. It is a long, unusually varied circuit
The Nordschleife is 20.8 kilometres long, with 73 corners and 300 metres of elevation difference, according to the Nürburgring’s official circuit page. Those figures help explain why it demands attention throughout a lap: the course is not a short, flat sequence of turns.
The Nürburgring reports gradients of up to 18 percent toward Hohe Acht and a descent of up to 11 percent at Fuchsröhre. Elevation and slope affect what you can see and how the car behaves, so approach unfamiliar sections with margin rather than trying to match someone else’s pace.
2. The Nordschleife is a historic race and test track
Opened in 1927, the Nordschleife is part of the Nürburgring complex in Germany’s Eifel region. Its history as a race and test track is part of its appeal, but the setting does not make a tourist-drive session a race. Treat it as a demanding circuit open to public driving under specific rules, not as a place to compete with other drivers.

3. Tourist drives happen only when the track is available
Tourist-drive sessions are offered when the Nordschleife is not committed to events or testing. Check the official opening-hours schedule and the tourist-drives page close to your visit; a date that looks convenient is not a guarantee that the track will be open.
The operator says no appointment or registration is needed for tourist drives. You do need sufficient credit or a valid season ticket, and the official FAQ notes that incidents, weather or track conditions can delay or close a session. Confirm the live status before setting out and be prepared for a change of plan.
4. Tourist driving is not the same on both Nürburgring tracks
For tourist drives, cars use the Nordschleife; motorcycles use the Grand Prix track. Do not assume that a motorcycle can join a Nordschleife tourist session. The distinction is stated in the Nürburgring’s official FAQ.

5. You and your vehicle must meet the current rules
The driving regulations, with status dated June 2026, require drivers to be at least 18 and hold a valid driving licence. Only vehicles that meet German road-vehicle requirements are admitted; some vehicle classes and modifications are excluded. Drivers bringing a vehicle not registered in Germany must carry proof of insurance.

Read the regulations before travelling rather than assuming that road registration alone makes a vehicle eligible. Requirements and operations can change, and the operator’s current rules govern access.
6. German road-traffic rules apply on tourist drives
The Nürburgring describes tourist drives as subject to German road-traffic rules. Drive on the right, overtake only on the left, obey speed restrictions and stay in control. Drifting and stopping on the track are forbidden. Do not continue if your vehicle is leaking coolant, oil or fuel.

The regulations reproduce § 3(1) of Germany’s Road Traffic Ordinance (StVO): drivers must choose a speed that lets them control the vehicle at all times, adapting it to road, traffic, visibility and weather conditions, as well as personal ability and the vehicle and its load. The practical implication is simple: a clear stretch is not permission to drive beyond what you can safely manage.
7. Conditions and your own ability matter more than speed
The operator warns that the circuit has blind corners, changing grip and demanding conditions. Weather and track conditions can also affect whether a session runs. A lap time is not a useful target for a first visit; choose a pace that leaves room to react and slow down when visibility, grip or traffic calls for it.
The Nürburgring’s safety guidance calls the Nordschleife “not a modern racetrack but rather the world’s most beautiful country road without oncoming traffic” and advises drivers to avoid risks. That is guidance to take literally: public sessions put different drivers and vehicles on the same route, and you are responsible for driving within your limits.

8. Know what to do if there is an incident
Save the official Nordschleife emergency number, +49 (0) 2691 302 9111, before driving. If an incident or breakdown occurs, follow the operator’s current safety instructions:
- Do not turn around or reverse on the track.
- If it is safe, leave the track area and get behind the barrier.
- Warn approaching traffic without putting yourself in danger.
- Help injured people where possible, then call the official emergency number.
Do not stop to take photographs or film while driving; the operator prohibits filming and photography behind the wheel.

If driving yourself is not the right fit, the Nürburgring lists official training and co-pilot experiences among its visitor options. Training is a way to learn with instruction; a co-pilot ride lets you experience the circuit as a passenger rather than managing the driving task. Check current offerings, dates and terms with the operator, since availability can vary.

10. Plan the visit around the venue, not just a lap
The Nürburgring’s visitor information also lists accommodation options, which can make a visit easier to plan around the opening schedule. If you want to study the layout beforehand, a Nürburgring Nordschleife track map can help you orient yourself to its length and named sections, but it is not a requirement for driving and does not replace the operator’s safety instructions.
