The Tesla Model S Plaid is a tri-motor electric sedan built around extreme acceleration, with a Tesla-published 1,020-hp rating and a U.S. EPA-estimated range of 368 miles. Its advertised 200-mph top speed is not available on every car as delivered: Tesla says it requires a paid hardware upgrade. Here are the key specs, equipment conditions and ownership details to check.
1. The Plaid is a tri-motor performance Model S
Tesla lists a tri-motor powertrain and 1,020 hp for the Model S Plaid on its U.S. Model S page. Tesla’s owner documentation describes two motors at the rear and a carbon-fiber-wrapped rotor motor arrangement. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
2. How fast is a Tesla Model S Plaid?
Tesla claims 0–60 mph in 1.99 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 9.23 seconds at a 155-mph trap speed. The figures are Tesla-published performance claims; they are not a test result for every car or driving condition. Launch surface, vehicle configuration and other conditions can affect real-world performance.
3. Can every Model S Plaid reach 200 mph?
No. Tesla lists a 200-mph top speed but states, “The indicated Plaid top speed requires a paid hardware upgrade.” Tesla’s U.S. owner manual also says certain Plaid hardware is required above approximately 163 mph. Do not assume a car can reach 200 mph based on the Plaid badge or advertised figure alone. Check the specific vehicle’s equipment and its market-specific manual.

4. What is the Model S Plaid’s range?
Tesla lists 368 miles of EPA-estimated range for the Plaid on its current U.S. page. This is an estimate, not a promise of how far a particular trip will go. Tesla says actual range varies with factors including configuration, charge state, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation. A high-speed drive, in particular, should not be planned around the EPA estimate as if it were a guaranteed distance.
5. How long does it take to charge a Model S Plaid?
Tesla lists a maximum Supercharging rate of 250 kW. That peak figure does not guarantee a particular session time or charging rate: actual performance can vary with charger type and battery temperature, among other factors. Tesla’s range-added-in-15-minutes statement is based on constant-speed highway data, so it should not be read as a universal charging-session result. For trip planning, use the vehicle’s navigation and the charging information for the route rather than treating peak power as a fixed rate.

6. Track Mode changes how the car behaves
Tesla’s owner manual describes Track Mode as modifying stability control, traction control, regenerative braking and cooling for closed-circuit driving. Driver-assistance features automatically turn off while Track Mode is active. It is intended for a closed circuit, not public roads; drivers should understand the mode’s effects and follow the vehicle’s instructions before using it.
7. Tires and brakes are part of the high-speed specification
Maximum-speed capability depends on equipment, not just power. Tesla’s cited European manual names Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and says a Model S with Tesla Carbon Ceramic brakes can reach 200 mph under the conditions stated in that manual. That is not a universal tire recommendation for every market or Plaid configuration. Tesla’s U.S. manual advises using tires and wheels that match the vehicle’s original specifications and staying within the tires’ speed ratings.

If you are shopping for replacement tires for a Model S Plaid, confirm the model year, market, wheel configuration, tire dimensions, load rating and speed rating against the individual car. A tire that fits one Plaid setup may not be suitable for another.
8. The battery and drive-unit warranty has a longer term than basic coverage
For the U.S. Model S page, Tesla lists basic vehicle coverage of 4 years or 50,000 miles and battery and drive-unit coverage of 8 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Warranty terms are market-specific and can change; consult Tesla’s current terms for the vehicle’s region and confirm coverage for the particular car.

9. It retains useful sedan cargo space
Tesla lists 28 cubic feet of cargo capacity and 19- or 21-inch wheel options on its U.S. Model S page. Wheel selection affects tire fitment, so use the vehicle’s original specifications when replacing tires rather than assuming that a tire listed for another wheel option will work.
10. Verify the individual car’s features and configuration
Tesla notes that features described in owner manuals can depend on market region, manufacture date, configuration, purchased options, hardware and software version. For the most relevant information about a specific vehicle, check the owner manual on its touchscreen and verify installed equipment directly. This matters especially when assessing high-speed capability, tires, brakes and available features.
