The DeLorean time machine is a fictional conversion of a real sports car: in the films, Doc Brown equips it with a nuclear-powered time-travel system, and Marty uses it to reach 1955. The choice was a filmmaking decision, not a claim about what an actual DeLorean can do. Here are ten useful details about the idea, the original screen car, and the replicas and models fans can see or buy.
1. The time machine is a fictional DeLorean conversion
In the story, Doc Brown turns a DeLorean into a nuclear-powered time machine, making the car Marty’s means of traveling to 1955. That description belongs to the film’s fiction; it says nothing about the capabilities of a real DeLorean. The official production notes explain the premise.
2. The filmmakers wanted a time machine that could move
Co-writers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale considered putting the time machine in a sports car so it could travel with the characters. The DeLorean’s gull-wing doors also offered comic possibilities, helping make it the choice for Doc’s invention, according to the production notes.
3. An early concept put the machine in a refrigerator
Before settling on a vehicle, the writers considered a refrigerator. Zemeckis later recalled that the concept required someone to climb inside and close the door; the filmmakers worried that children might imitate it and lock themselves in. The discarded idea is described in the official production notes.

4. The screenplay took shape over several years
The official production notes date Zemeckis and Gale’s first screenplay drafting to fall 1980 and describe further revisions before the time-machine concept was finalized. The first film was shot at Universal Studios and at locations around Los Angeles, rather than being made entirely on a studio set. The production notes cover both the writing process and filming locations.
5. The original hero car has a documented preservation history
The original screen-used car—also called the A-Car—was inducted into the National Historic Vehicle Register in 2021. A franchise announcement that year said it was then on permanent loan to the Petersen Automotive Museum. That announcement records the loan as of 2021; it does not establish whether the car is currently on display. The 2021 announcement gives the preservation details.

LEGO announced the set in 2022, so its launch price is historical rather than a current price. Check LEGO or a retailer for present stock and pricing in your region. LEGO’s announcement lists the set’s features.

10. A replica, the original car, and a consumer model are different things
“DeLorean time machine” can mean several distinct objects. The original A-Car is a screen-used film vehicle with a documented restoration and 2021 register induction. The Team Fox car is a specific functioning replica described by the franchise site as road-worthy and street legal. Other replicas may be built for display, and should not be assumed road-ready without vehicle-specific evidence. LEGO set 10300 is a brick-built consumer model. Keeping those categories separate avoids mistaking a prop or collectible for a drivable car.
