The car most people mean by the “Bullitt Mustang” is a Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback used in the film Bullitt. It was not a factory Bullitt trim in 1968. The documented hero car has a known VIN and history—and it is distinct from the second Mustang used for destructive stunt work and from Ford’s later Bullitt tribute models.
10 things to know about the 1968 Bullitt Mustang
1. “Bullitt” was not a 1968 factory trim
The National Historic Vehicle Register identifies the film car as a 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback. “Bullitt” refers to its association with the film and its starring character, not a special factory model designation for that year.
2. The registered hero car has a specific VIN
The Hagerty Drivers Foundation’s National Historic Vehicle Register identifies the documented hero car as VIN 8R02S125559. A Mustang that looks similar is not thereby the movie car; the VIN and its supporting provenance matter.
3. Its recorded specification is unusually well defined
The registry lists the hero car as Highland Green with a black interior and a 390-cubic-inch V8 rated at 325 horsepower, paired with a four-barrel carburetor. It also records the engine as original. These details describe the registered car, not every Mustang used in the film or every replica.

4. There were two Mustangs, with different jobs
The film used two 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks. The registry identifies VIN 8R02S125559 as the hero car and VIN 8R02S125558 as the car used for destructive stunt work. The vehicles should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both appeared in the production.
5. The stunt car took the harsher route
Ford reports that the second Mustang was used for many jumps, went to a salvage yard after filming, and later resurfaced in Baja California. That history belongs to the stunt car, VIN 8R02S125558—not to the registered hero car.

6. The hero car was sold after filming
According to Ford’s account, Warner Bros. sold the hero vehicle to a private buyer after production. Its later history is separate from the stunt car’s salvage-yard and Baja California story.
7. Its ownership history reaches Sean Kiernan’s family
Ford identifies Sean Kiernan as the hero car’s owner and reports that his father purchased it in 1974. Kiernan inherited the car from him. This documented chain of ownership is part of what distinguishes the surviving hero car from an undocumented lookalike.

8. Its history and preservation were documented before its public reveal
Ford says it and the Historic Vehicle Association worked with Kiernan to authenticate and document the car’s history and preservation. Ford reported the car’s public reveal in 2018, bringing the surviving vehicle’s story into public view.
9. “Bullitt Mustang” can also mean a later tribute model
Ford later used the Bullitt name for modern Mustang tribute editions. Ford’s 2018 announcement connected that edition to the film car and reported the original’s appearance at the North American International Auto Show. A modern Bullitt edition is a tribute model, not the 1968 movie car.

10. Appearance alone cannot establish authenticity
A Highland Green fastback, a replica, and a tribute edition may evoke the film, but resemblance is not proof of identity. The official sources establish the registered car’s VIN and history; they do not provide a full component-by-component comparison of the two movie cars or a measure of how accurately individual replicas reproduce them. For a specific car, rely on car-specific documentation rather than styling alone.
