10 Things That Separate the Porsche 718 Cayman From the 911

The 718 Cayman is mid-engine and seats two; the 911 Carrera is rear-engine with a 2+2 layout. See how engines, performance, storage, and variants compare.

The defining difference is where the engine sits: the 718 Cayman is mid-engine, while the 911 Carrera is rear-engine. That changes the cars’ basic layout, but it does not make every 718 or every 911 alike. Engine, output, acceleration, seating, and equipment vary by trim, model year, and market.

Below are ten useful points of comparison, with UK-market 2025 718 specifications kept separate from a US dealer’s 2026 base-model comparison. Those figures are not a single, like-for-like test.

1. Engine placement: mid-engine versus rear-engine

The 718 Cayman places its engine between the cabin and rear axle. Porsche says that its mid-engine boxer layout gives the 718 a “low and central centre of gravity.” The 911 Carrera’s engine is behind the rear axle, the defining rear-engine arrangement cited in the dealer’s 2026 comparison.

These are different engineering layouts, not a verdict about which car handles better in every situation. Porsche describes the 718’s layout as part of its sporting character; the dealer characterizes the Cayman as agile. Neither statement is a substitute for an independent, back-to-back test.

2. Base engines are different, but the model families are broader

In Porsche Milwaukee North’s 2026 base-model comparison, the 911 Carrera has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six and the 718 Cayman has a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four. Those descriptions apply to the compared base models, not every car carrying either badge.

The 718 range also includes six-cylinder variants. Porsche Great Britain’s 2025 listings include the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter Cayman GTS 4.0 and the GT4 RS, alongside four-cylinder versions. A comparison based only on the two base engines misses much of the range.

3. Power depends on the trim and the unit used

The dealer’s US 2026 base comparison lists 388 hp for the 911 Carrera and 300 hp for the 718 Cayman. For a separate market and model year, Porsche Great Britain lists the 2025 Cayman range from 300 PS for the base model to 500 PS for the GT4 RS.

Do not read those numbers as a direct ranking across the full families: they refer to different markets and trims, and horsepower (hp) and metric horsepower (PS) are different units.

2025 UK 718 Cayman variant Power Published acceleration
Base Cayman 300 PS 0–62 mph in 4.7 seconds with Sport Chrono Package
Cayman S 350 PS 0–62 mph in 4.2 seconds with Sport Chrono Package
Cayman GTS 4.0 400 PS 0–62 mph in 4.0 seconds with Sport Chrono Package
Cayman GT4 RS 500 PS 0–62 mph in 3.4 seconds

Figures are Porsche Great Britain specifications for the listed 2025 UK models; they should not be assumed to describe cars sold in another market or year. See Porsche Great Britain’s 718 Cayman specifications.

4. Acceleration figures need matching conditions

In the dealer’s 2026 US base comparison, the 911 Carrera is listed at 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds with Sport Chrono, while the 718 Cayman is listed at 4.7 seconds with PDK. Porsche Great Britain’s 2025 718 figures instead use 0–62 mph, and some specify Sport Chrono Package. The different speed interval, trim, equipment, and transmission mean these figures do not establish a universal “faster car” for the two model families.

For a fair speed comparison, match model year, market, trim, transmission, options, and the manufacturer’s test conditions. The figures above are published vehicle specifications, not results from an independent comparison test.

5. The 911 Carrera has a 2+2 layout; the Cayman has two seats

The dealer comparison describes the 911 Carrera as a 2+2 and the 718 Cayman as a two-seater. The 911 therefore has a pair of rear seats in addition to its front seats, while the Cayman does not. The seat count alone does not establish how comfortable or useful those rear seats will be for a particular passenger or trip.

6. The Cayman has two luggage compartments

Porsche highlights two luggage compartments on the 718 Cayman. That gives the car storage areas at both ends, a practical consequence of its mid-engine packaging. The sources cited here do not provide a matched cargo-volume comparison with the 911, so they do not establish which model carries more luggage by volume.

7. The cited fuel-capacity figures favor the 911 Carrera

Porsche Milwaukee North’s 2026 base-model comparison lists a 16.9-gallon fuel capacity for the 911 Carrera and 14.2 gallons for the 718 Cayman. These are the dealer’s figures for the models it compares; they are not verified here for every derivative or market. Tank capacity is not fuel economy, and it does not show how far either car travels on a tank.

8. The 718 offers PDK or a manual, depending on version

Porsche’s 718 page describes a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, which can be used in manual or automatic modes, and an alternative six-speed manual. Availability depends on trim and market. The cited sources do not provide a complete, equivalent transmission-availability chart for the 911, so they cannot support a full family-wide comparison of manual options.

9. Porsche presents the 718’s chassis around its mid-engine concept

Porsche links the 718’s mid-engine boxer layout with a low, central centre of gravity, and describes direct steering and sporty chassis tuning as part of the car’s character. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of its design approach, not proof that every driver will prefer its handling to a 911’s.

The 911 and 718 embody distinct layouts and driving philosophies. Which feels better is a subjective question best answered by driving the specific trims being considered; the published figures and descriptions here do not amount to a controlled comparison.

10. Each badge covers multiple variants, and availability varies

The 911 family includes distinct lines such as Carrera, Targa, Turbo S, and GT3 variants. Porsche Great Britain’s 2025 718 Cayman listings include Cayman, Style Edition, S, GTS 4.0, and GT4 RS, with the page marking limited availability. Porsche Newsroom’s range listing also shows a broader set of 911 and 718 derivatives.

Those names describe a range, not a promise that every version is available in every country or model year. Check the local Porsche market site for the exact trim lineup and specifications. See Porsche Newsroom’s model range and Porsche Great Britain’s 2025 Cayman listings.

At a glance: what the figures do and do not compare

Comparison 911 Carrera 718 Cayman Scope
Engine placement Rear-engine Mid-engine Dealer comparison and Porsche’s 718 description
Base engine 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four Dealer’s 2026 US base-model comparison
Base-model power 388 hp 300 hp Dealer’s 2026 US base-model comparison
Published 0–60 mph time 3.7 seconds with Sport Chrono 4.7 seconds with PDK Dealer’s 2026 US base-model comparison; conditions differ by stated equipment
Seats 2+2 Two Dealer’s 2026 comparison
Fuel capacity 16.9 gallons 14.2 gallons Dealer’s 2026 base-model comparison; not verified for all derivatives
Storage layout Not stated in the cited comparison Two luggage compartments Porsche’s 718 page; no matched cargo-volume figures

The US base figures above come from Porsche Milwaukee North’s 911-versus-Cayman comparison, a dealer-published page rather than an official Porsche corporate specification table. Porsche’s historical 718 Cayman technical specifications PDF is not a current model-year source and should not be treated as one.

Which is the better fit?

The central choice is between the Cayman’s mid-engine, two-seat layout and the 911 Carrera’s rear-engine, 2+2 configuration. Beyond that, decide by the specific trim and market rather than the badge alone: engine, power, transmission, and published performance differ across each family. If luggage capacity, price, dimensions, or fuel economy is decisive, the sources cited here do not provide matched figures for a fair comparison.
