The GMC Hummer EV SUV leads Cars.com’s 2026 model-year ranking of SUVs by maximum published towing capacity, at 10,300 pounds. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer follows at 10,000 pounds, then the Ford Expedition at 9,600 pounds. These are each model’s highest listed ratings—not ratings available on every configuration, or a measure of how stable or comfortable an SUV is while towing.
2026 SUVs ranked by maximum towing capacity
The following order and figures are reported by Cars.com’s 2026 SUV towing-capacity ranking. Each number is the listed maximum for that model, not a guarantee that every trim or drivetrain can tow that much.
| Rank | SUV | Maximum listed towing capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | GMC Hummer EV SUV | 10,300 lb. |
| 2 | Jeep Grand Wagoneer | 10,000 lb. |
| 3 | Ford Expedition | 9,600 lb. |
| 4 | Toyota Sequoia | 9,520 lb. |
| 5 | Lexus GX 550 | 9,096 lb. |
| 6 | Lincoln Navigator | 8,700 lb. |
| 7 | Dodge Durango | 8,700 lb. |
| 8 | Nissan Armada | 8,500 lb. |
| 9 | Infiniti QX80 | 8,500 lb. |
| 10 | Land Rover Range Rover | 8,200 lb. |
Toyota’s own 2026 Sequoia overview states a maximum of up to 9,500 pounds, rather than the 9,520 pounds in the Cars.com comparison. The table preserves the comparison source’s figure; consult the exact vehicle’s manufacturer rating before relying on a number.
What the top ratings mean in practice
GMC Hummer EV SUV and Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Cars.com lists the Hummer EV SUV at 10,300 pounds, the highest maximum in its 2026 comparison. Jeep describes 10,000 pounds as the Grand Wagoneer’s available maximum. “Available maximum” matters: it does not mean that every Grand Wagoneer is equipped to reach that rating.

Ford Expedition
Ford says a properly equipped 2026 Expedition 4×4 can tow up to 9,600 pounds, but its rating varies substantially by configuration. The Ford Expedition specifications list up to 6,000 pounds for a 4×2, 9,000 pounds for a 4×4 Expedition MAX, and 6,300 pounds for a 4×2 Expedition MAX. Ford also says the 9,600-pound maximum does not apply with 24-inch wheels; cargo, passengers, accessories, and vehicle configuration affect capacity.
Toyota Sequoia
Toyota’s stated 2026 Sequoia maximum is up to 9,500 pounds. Its manufacturer overview identifies an integrated trailer brake controller and trailer-sway control as standard equipment. Those aids do not change the need to check the capacity of the particular vehicle and trailer setup.

Its Navigator towing information gives lower capacities for other equipment combinations, including 24-inch wheels and vehicles without the tow package.
Nissan Armada
Nissan lists up to 8,500 pounds for the 2026 Armada and identifies an integrated trailer brake controller as available technology. Check the Armada’s specifications and the vehicle’s documentation for equipment-specific limits.

How to choose among SUVs with high tow ratings
Match the rating to the exact vehicle
A nameplate’s highest number may depend on drivetrain, powertrain, wheel size, axle, tow package, and other equipment. Ford’s Expedition and Lincoln’s Navigator make clear how far the rating can vary within one model line. Before buying or towing, find the rating for the exact year, trim, drivetrain, and installed equipment in the manufacturer’s towing guide or owner’s manual.
Check payload and hitch limits, not only trailer weight
The maximum trailer rating is only one limit. Passengers, luggage, accessories, and the trailer’s tongue load all use the SUV’s carrying capacity. Check the vehicle’s payload and gross vehicle weight limits, as well as the hitch and receiver ratings and the trailer’s tongue-weight requirements. A trailer can be below the advertised maximum tow weight and still exceed another limit.

Consider the towing job, not just the ranking
A capacity figure does not establish which SUV is best for a particular trailer. Stability, braking, power on grades, and towing technology also matter. Edmunds’ guidance, carried by the Associated Press, discusses these factors alongside maximum capacity: what to consider when towing with a vehicle.
Verify the equipment and setup
Before towing, compare the trailer’s requirements with the SUV’s factory equipment and instructions. Confirm whether the vehicle has the required tow package, hitch connections, and trailer-brake equipment, and whether the manufacturer specifies a weight-distribution setup for your trailer. Requirements differ by vehicle and trailer; do not assume that one accessory or setup applies to all SUVs.

How to read this ranking
This is a comparison of maximum published ratings, not a road test or a ranking of towing manners. Cars.com supplies the full ten-model list; manufacturer sources independently confirm key figures for the Grand Wagoneer, Expedition, Sequoia, Navigator, and Armada. Current factory towing-guide figures for every model in the list are not established here, so verify the precise configuration with its manufacturer before using the ranking to make a towing decision.
