The KBB page is titled “Most Powerful SUVs of 2025,” but its entries include 2026 and 2027 models, so this is not a clean ranking of 2025 model-year vehicles. The figures below reflect KBB’s published ordering and outputs, not independent test results.
How this ranking works
The order follows Kelley Blue Book’s reported maximum horsepower, from highest to lowest. The entries span multiple model years and include both traditional SUV shapes and coupe-style SUVs. Powertrains also differ: the BMW XM is a plug-in hybrid, while the other listed entries are combustion-powered models. Treat the list as one current ranking snapshot, not a definitive comparison of every SUV on sale or every powertrain category.
Rankings can change with eligibility rules. For example, iSeeCars’ 2026 rankings cover new and used models from the previous five years and separate conventional, luxury, large, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric SUVs. Its electric SUV category lists the Porsche Cayenne at 1,139 hp; that is a different powertrain and listing scope from KBB’s 729-hp Cayenne Coupe entry below. See iSeeCars’ SUV rankings.

What the horsepower numbers tell you—and what they do not
The leader is a plug-in hybrid
The XM’s 738 hp tops this KBB ordering. Because it combines a combustion engine with electric assistance, its peak system output is not directly comparable to a single-engine rating without considering the powertrain. The table’s number is useful for comparing published peak output, but it does not explain how power is delivered or how the vehicle performs in a particular driving situation.
Two pairs are tied
The Escalade and Escalade ESV are both listed at 682 hp; the Mercedes-AMG GLC and GLC Coupe are both listed at 671 hp. Horsepower alone cannot separate either pair. Differences in body size, passenger and cargo needs, equipment, and price may matter more to a buyer than a tie in peak output.

Horsepower is not a complete measure of capability
A higher published figure does not by itself establish quicker acceleration, greater towing capacity, better ride quality, reliability, or better value. Those comparisons require model- and trim-specific evidence beyond this ranking. For shopping, verify the exact model year, trim, powertrain, and equipment offered in your market rather than relying on a nameplate alone.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that average horsepower for all new vehicles in model year 2024 was 258 hp. It also reported a 118% increase in car-SUV horsepower from model year 1975 to 2024. These figures provide context for how far the SUVs in this list sit above the new-vehicle average; the EPA’s measure covers a broader vehicle population than this selected top-ten ranking.
