The 2026 GMC Hummer EV SUV leads the documented examples here, with 16 inches of ground clearance in Extract Mode; the 2026 Rivian R1S reaches 14.9 inches at its highest air-suspension setting. Those maximums are conditional, not always-available ride heights. The available published figures do not support a reliable, like-for-like list of ten SUVs, so this guide compares the strongest documented examples and explains what to check before using clearance to choose an off-road vehicle.
Which 2026 SUV has the highest ground clearance?
Among the examples reported in the available 2026 comparison, the GMC Hummer EV SUV has the highest stated maximum: 16 inches in Extract Mode, according to CARFAX’s 2026 ranking, published March 16, 2026. CARFAX notes that Extract Mode is not available all the time. The figure therefore describes a special setting, not clearance a driver can necessarily use continuously on a trail.
The Rivian R1S is next among these examples at 14.9 inches, but only with its air suspension at its highest setting, CARFAX reports. These figures are useful reference points, not proof of an all-market, all-trim ranking: the cited sources do not establish a common measurement method or comparable suspension conditions for ten SUVs.
Published 2026 clearance figures to compare carefully
| SUV and model year | Reported clearance | Condition or qualification | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMC Hummer EV SUV, 2026 | 16 in | Requires Extract Mode; CARFAX says this mode is not available all the time. | CARFAX, March 16, 2026 |
| Rivian R1S, 2026 | 14.9 in | At the highest air-suspension setting, according to CARFAX. | CARFAX, March 16, 2026 |
| Ford Bronco Raptor, 2026 | Up to 13.1 in | Ford identifies this as an “up to” figure for the Raptor; it does not apply to every Bronco trim. | Ford, 2026 model specifications |
| Ford Bronco, other listed trims, 2026 | Up to 11.5 in | Trim-dependent figure from Ford’s model comparison; verify the chosen configuration. | Ford, 2026 model specifications |
| Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, 2026 | 12.9 in | iSeeCars category listing; trim and measurement method are not established here for direct comparison with manufacturer figures. | iSeeCars, 2026 off-road rankings |
| Ford Expedition, 2026 | 10.6 in | iSeeCars category listing; not a harmonized manufacturer-spec audit. | iSeeCars, 2026 off-road rankings |
| Subaru Outback, 2026 | 9.5 in | iSeeCars category listing; not a harmonized manufacturer-spec audit. | iSeeCars, 2026 off-road rankings |
The table intentionally includes only vehicles and numbers supported by the cited pages. CARFAX presents a sorted list, while iSeeCars groups vehicles in category rankings. The sources do not supply one uniform basis for ordering all these entries, and they do not establish ten comparable top-clearance SUVs.

Why a ten-SUV ranking needs more than a clearance number
Ground clearance is the space between the vehicle’s underside and the ground, but a published maximum can depend on trim, suspension mode, equipment, and tire fitment. A ranking that combines a special maximum ride height for one SUV with another vehicle’s ordinary or unspecified figure can look precise while comparing unlike conditions.
For a defensible ten-vehicle list, the market and model year must be fixed, and each figure must use the same convention—such as standard clearance or maximum available clearance. For each SUV, the comparison should identify the trim, package and tire configuration, and whether an adjustable suspension must be raised to a particular mode. The cited pages do not establish those details consistently enough for a reliable top ten.

What else matters for off-road capability?
Approach, breakover, and departure angles
Clearance does not tell the whole story of whether a vehicle can cross a ridge, climb onto an obstacle, or descend without striking its body. Approach, breakover, and departure angles describe the vehicle’s geometry at the front, middle, and rear. Ford’s 2026 Bronco specifications list, for the Bronco Raptor, up to 13.1 inches of ground clearance alongside a 43.2-degree approach angle, 29-degree breakover angle, and 37.2-degree departure angle. Ford’s figures are trim-specific; compare the exact model you intend to drive.
Water-fording capability
A water-fording rating is a separate specification, not something that can be inferred from ground clearance. Ford lists up to 37 inches of water-fording capability for the 2026 Bronco Raptor. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact vehicle and conditions rather than treating that maximum as a general safe depth for every Bronco or crossing.

Size and terrain
A high-clearance full-size SUV may suit open, rough routes, while vehicle width and length can become constraints on narrow trails or tight turns. Match the vehicle to the terrain you expect to encounter, and consider clearance together with its geometry and the equipment fitted to the specific trim.

- Set the scope. Compare the same model year and market; this guide uses U.S.-market 2026 examples.
- Choose a clearance basis. Decide whether you need standard clearance or the maximum the vehicle can reach, and do not mix the two without labeling them.
- Check conditions for the exact trim. Confirm required suspension mode, package, and tire fitment in the manufacturer’s specifications. Treat third-party figures as less comparable when their method or configuration is not stated.
- Compare geometry and water guidance. Look up approach, breakover, and departure angles, plus water-fording information if relevant to your routes.
- Match capability to your routes. Consider vehicle dimensions and intended terrain, not just the highest number in a clearance table.
For a prior-model-year reference, Ford also published Bronco off-roading information for 2025 at its 2025 Bronco off-roading page. Do not treat prior-year specifications as 2026 figures without checking the current model-year comparison.
