These 10 small SUVs earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award for a specified model year: Mazda CX-30, Mazda CX-5, Mazda CX-50, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Genesis GV60, Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona. This is an award-based candidate list, not a ranking: IIHS results do not establish one overall safest model among them, and awards can depend on model year, production date, trim and headlights.

How to read this small-SUV safety list

IIHS evaluates more than crash-test protection. Its small-SUV table covers small-overlap and moderate-overlap front crashes, side-impact protection, headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front crash prevention, seat-belt reminders, and LATCH ease of use. A model’s award reflects the criteria for its specified year; it does not mean every trim or production date has identical equipment or results. Check the award’s applicability before buying.

For 2026 awards, Top Safety Pick requires good ratings in the small-overlap, moderate-overlap and side tests; acceptable or good headlights across trims; and a standard pedestrian front crash-prevention system rated at least acceptable. Top Safety Pick+ also requires good pedestrian prevention and acceptable or good vehicle-to-vehicle prevention, with qualifying systems standard. See IIHS award criteria and current results for details and model-year-specific applicability.

Ten IIHS award-winning small SUVs

The list below uses the award year shown in the current IIHS table. The Honda HR-V is a 2027 award recipient; the other entries are 2026 recipients. The Kia Sportage award applies to vehicles built after May 2025. These are not directly comparable as a single ranked group because they span model years and award applicability.

What the IIHS tests measure

Crashworthiness

The small-overlap front test sends a vehicle into a rigid barrier at 40 mph, with 25% of one side of the vehicle’s front striking the barrier. The moderate-overlap test is also conducted at 40 mph, but 40% of the vehicle’s width strikes a deformable barrier; it includes a rear-seat dummy. In the side test, an SUV-like rig strikes the driver side at 37 mph. IIHS cautions that larger, heavier vehicles generally offer more protection than smaller, lighter ones, and that small- and moderate-overlap ratings are best compared among vehicles of similar weight. See the IIHS ratings and test information.

Headlights and crash prevention

Headlight ratings are specific to the headlight type, so an award should not be read as proof that every lighting setup performs identically. Crash-prevention ratings cover systems that can help avoid or mitigate vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front crashes. Check that the qualifying system is standard on the exact trim you are shopping for.

Seat-belt reminders and LATCH

IIHS also reports seat-belt reminder performance and LATCH ease of use. LATCH is an assessment of how easy it is to use child-seat anchor hardware on the evaluated trim and seat type. It is not a rating of a particular child seat, nor an endorsement of a child-seat model.

How to choose between award winners

  • Start with the correct award year and tier. Match the IIHS entry to the vehicle’s model year; distinguish Top Safety Pick from Top Safety Pick+.
  • Check production-date cutoffs. For the Sportage, confirm the vehicle was built after May 2025.
  • Verify trim and headlights. Look up the exact headlight type and confirm qualifying crash-prevention systems are standard on the version you want.
  • Compare the underlying results. Consider crashworthiness, headlights, and both front crash-prevention categories instead of choosing by badge alone.
  • Keep size and weight in view. IIHS advises comparing small- and moderate-overlap outcomes among vehicles of similar weight, rather than treating the ratings as equivalent across substantially different vehicles.
  • For child-seat planning, inspect the vehicle yourself. LATCH ease is limited to the evaluated trim and seat type; it does not tell you whether a specific child seat fits your family’s needs.

What the award totals do—and do not—show

By March 24, 2026, IIHS reported that 63 vehicles had qualified for its awards: 45 Top Safety Pick+ and 18 Top Safety Pick. IIHS also said more than 70% of 85 model-year-2025 vehicles it had evaluated earned acceptable or good ratings in the new vehicle-to-vehicle front crash-prevention test, while more than 77% of tested 2026 models met that standard. These are dated figures for the evaluated model-year pools, not statistics limited to small SUVs or to all vehicles on sale. IIHS news and award updates.

IIHS President David Harkey described the 2026 emphasis this way: “This year, we’re asking automakers to make excellent protection for back seat passengers the norm.” He also said, “For TOP SAFETY PICK+, we’re requiring crash avoidance systems that are better at preventing pedestrian crashes as well as higher speed crashes with other vehicles.”

These awards help narrow a search, but they do not establish an overall ordinal winner among the ten candidates. Nor do they supply current NHTSA star ratings, prices, fuel economy, reliability or insurance costs for each model; those are separate comparisons.
