Tom Cruise’s reported car collection is compelling because it is not built around one type of status symbol. British GQ’s July 3, 2020 account links him to postwar American convertibles, a first-generation Corvette, German driver’s cars, a real SCCA race car and a Bugatti Veyron. The list below describes cars he has owned or was reported to own; it should not be read as a verified inventory of what remains in his garage in 2026.
The 10-car list at a glance
| # | Car | Year | Collection angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Buick Roadmaster convertible | 1949 | Film history and postwar American character |
| 2 | Chevrolet Corvette C1 | 1958 | Early Corvette significance |
| 3 | Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 | 1970 | Classic muscle and film provenance |
| 4 | Dodge Colt | 1976 | Personal coming-of-age history |
| 5 | Porsche 928 | 1979 | Risky Business association and auction history |
| 6 | BMW 3-Series E30 | 1983 | Compact, driver-focused German engineering |
| 7 | Nissan 300ZX SCCA race car | 1988 | Documented competition use |
| 8 | Porsche 993 | 1996 | Last air-cooled 911 generation |
| 9 | Ford Excursion | 2000 | Reported security and privacy conversion |
| 10 | Bugatti Veyron | 2005 | Modern hypercar exclusivity |
These choices cover several kinds of “rare.” Some cars are unusual because of a specific trim or surviving provenance; others matter because they mark an important moment in automotive history or Cruise’s own life.

The cars that make the collection distinctive
1949 Buick Roadmaster
British GQ says Cruise and Dustin Hoffman drove a Roadmaster in Rain Man. Cruise reportedly fell for the convertible, kept it and used it on cross-country trips. That is stronger than a celebrity merely being photographed beside a classic: the car has a direct connection to a major film and a stated personal use.

1958 Chevrolet Corvette C1
GQ describes Cruise’s Corvette as a first-generation, solid-axle car finished in glacier blue and white with a blue leather interior. Early C1s occupy a foundational place in Corvette history, and the two-tone specification gives this example a period-correct visual identity rather than the anonymous look of a later mass-market sports car.
#1 Best Overall
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396
The reported SS396 pairs unmistakable muscle-car presence with a documented screen appearance in Jack Reacher. GQ gives the car a 350 bhp rating. Its appeal is not just output: the Chevelle represents the big-engine American performance formula before emissions rules and fuel concerns reshaped the segment.
1976 Dodge Colt
This is the least exotic car on the list and arguably the most revealing. GQ identifies it as a used Colt Cruise drove before moving to New York. It is not rare in the collector-market sense, but it supplies an authentic origin story: the collection includes a modest car tied to his pre-stardom years, not only cars acquired after success.
1979 Porsche 928
Cruise reportedly bought his own 928 after Risky Business. The model was Porsche’s front-engine V8 grand tourer, a deliberate alternative to the rear-engine 911. MotorTrend reported that Barrett-Jackson identified one of the film cars as the manual 928 in which Cruise learned to drive a stick. For that auction car, MotorTrend listed a 4.5-liter V8, about 219 hp, a reported 143 mph top speed and 0–60 mph in 6.8 seconds.
Rank #2
Forbes reported that a film-used 1979 928 sold for $49,200 in 2012—approximately five times the price of a comparable non-film 928 at the time. The famous line “Porsche, there is no substitute” is Joel Goodsen’s dialogue in the film, not evidence that Cruise used that phrase to describe his personal collection.
1983 BMW 3-Series E30
According to GQ, Cruise bought a new E30 after Taps and The Outsiders. The E30 adds a restrained, driver-first German counterpoint to the American classics. Its significance comes from balance and usability: compact dimensions, rear-wheel-drive dynamics and a design that has remained influential without relying on theatrical styling.
1988 Nissan 300ZX SCCA race car
This is the collection’s clearest competition machine. GQ reports that Newman-Sharp supplied Cruise with the red, white and blue No. 7 300ZX for his SCCA season and that he won races. A car with an actual race program and results carries a different kind of credibility from a road car selected solely for celebrity appeal.
Rank #3
1996 Porsche 993
GQ calls the 993 the last air-cooled Carrera and reports that Cruise owned several 911s, citing the 993 as a favorite. That makes it a technically important choice as well as a beautiful one: the 993 is the closing chapter of Porsche’s air-cooled 911 era, prized for its classic proportions and mechanical character.

GQ reported a stretched and heavily modified Excursion associated with security and privacy. Claims tying specific modifications to Scientology should be treated as tabloid reporting rather than independently verified specifications. Even with that qualification, an oversized SUV makes sense as a functional contrast to the sports cars: it reflects the practical problem of moving with a high-profile security detail.
2005 Bugatti Veyron
GQ reported that Cruise bought a Veyron in 2005 and drove it to the premiere of Mission: Impossible III. The Veyron supplies the collection’s modern hypercar statement: extreme engineering, limited production and performance far removed from the analog classics elsewhere in the garage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What was Tom Cruise’s first car?
The best-supported answer in this account is the used 1976 Dodge Colt. GQ places it before Cruise moved to New York and treats it as a coming-of-age car. That is different from asking for the first car he ever drove or the first car he purchased after becoming famous; those details are not established here.
Does Tom Cruise still have the Risky Business Porsche?
There is no reliable current inventory in the available reporting that proves Cruise still owns a particular 928. GQ says he bought his own 928 after the film, while MotorTrend and Forbes discuss a film-used 1979 car that later went through auction. Those are related pieces of provenance, not proof that the auction example was Cruise’s personal car or that his example remains in his possession.
Which cars are connected to his films or racing?
- The Buick Roadmaster is tied to Rain Man.
- The Porsche 928 is tied to Risky Business and to the story of Cruise learning a manual transmission in one of the film cars.
- The Chevelle SS396 later appeared in Jack Reacher.
- The Bugatti Veyron was reportedly driven to the Mission: Impossible III premiere.
- The Nissan 300ZX has SCCA race history, including races Cruise reportedly won.
No evidence in this account establishes that Cruise kept a specific car from the Mission: Impossible production fleet. The Veyron connection is a premiere appearance, not a claim that it was a production car.
Which is the rarest car in the collection?
That depends on the definition. The Bugatti Veyron is the strongest answer for modern performance exclusivity. The Nissan 300ZX is the most distinctive on competition provenance because it was prepared for an actual SCCA season. The Porsche 928 has the strongest documented film-and-auction trail, while the 1949 Roadmaster and 1958 Corvette lead for classic American character. The list therefore has no single objective winner: rarity, historical importance and provenance point to different cars.
The reported extra: Saleen Mustang S281
GQ also included a 2010 Saleen Mustang S281. It was described as a modified Mustang producing up to 550 bhp and used by Cruise for everyday errands. It works better as an honorable mention than as an eleventh “rare” car: its importance in the story is the surprising choice of a practical daily driver with serious power, not an unusual factory production rarity.
