But there is no Nissan model that is automatically reliable in every year or condition. On a used vehicle, the generation, transmission, maintenance history, corrosion, previous use, and open recalls can matter more than the badge on the grille.
This is an editorial ranking, not an official Nissan list or a guarantee of trouble-free ownership. It uses the latest iSeeCars Nissan reliability analysis as its statistical baseline, then adds generation history, drivetrain complexity, typical ownership patterns, and the practical availability of parts and repair knowledge. Because the Xterra is discontinued but remains highly relevant to used-SUV shoppers, it is included despite not appearing in iSeeCars’ current Nissan top-ten list.

Ranking at a glance
| Rank | Model | Best fit | Main used-buying concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nissan Frontier | All-around truck and daily use | Transmission service, frame corrosion, recalls |
| 2 | Nissan 370Z | Focused sports-car ownership | Abuse, modifications, clutch and oil-use issues |
| 3 | Nissan Murano | Comfortable family crossover | CVT history and generation-specific problems |
| 4 | Nissan Titan | Full-size towing and utility | Heavy use, corrosion, fuel and repair costs |
| 5 | Nissan Pathfinder | Family SUV with strong utility | Major differences between truck-based and crossover generations |
| 6 | Nissan Xterra | Rugged, affordable off-road SUV | Frame rust and accumulated off-road wear |
| 7 | Nissan Altima | Common midsize commuter sedan | CVT condition, oil consumption, accident history |
| 8 | Nissan Maxima | Quick, comfortable V6 sedan | CVT, electrical equipment, suspension repairs |
| 9 | Nissan Sentra | Budget transportation | CVT service and fleet or rental use |
| 10 | Nissan Armada | Large SUV and towing duty | Fuel, brake, suspension, electronic, and cooling costs |
The list is ranked by model name, but the recommendation always needs to be narrowed to a particular generation and powertrain. A well-maintained older Nissan can be a better purchase than a neglected newer one, while a supposedly strong model can become expensive after years of towing, commercial use, off-roading, poor repairs, or salt exposure.
How the reliability ranking was built
iSeeCars’ current Nissan analysis ranks the Frontier first, followed by the 370Z, Murano, Titan, Altima, Pathfinder, Rogue, Maxima, Sentra, Armada, and Versa. Its brand reliability analysis draws on more than 12 million vehicles. Its broader longevity methodology uses more than 300 million vehicle records to estimate useful lifespan and the probability that a vehicle will reach 200,000 miles.
#1 Best Overall

Those figures are useful because they are based on large-scale vehicle-survival data rather than a small owner poll. They are still population estimates, not promises about a particular Nissan sitting on a dealer’s lot. iSeeCars’ estimated 200,000-mile probabilities are especially easy to misread: a percentage for a new vehicle or a model population does not mean that a used example with 150,000 miles has the same odds, nor does it mean the vehicle will reach that mileage without major repairs.
This ranking also considers four practical questions that a raw score cannot answer:
- How durable and mechanically understandable is the model’s main powertrain?
- How much does the model vary between generations and transmissions?
- How likely is the typical used example to have been abused, modified, overloaded, or neglected?
- Can owners readily find parts, independent repair knowledge, and service information?
1. Nissan Frontier
Best overall Nissan reliability choice. The Frontier takes the top spot because it combines the strongest current Nissan ranking with a relatively straightforward truck formula and broad parts and service familiarity. iSeeCars gives it a 7.5 out of 10 reliability score, estimates an average lifespan of roughly 159,000 miles, and puts the probability of a new example reaching 200,000 miles at approximately 23%. The model also performs well for value retention in iSeeCars’ comparison framework.

Those numbers do not make every Frontier dependable. The second-generation truck, sold in the United States from 2005 through 2021, is a particularly important used-market target. The third-generation Frontier began with the 2022 model year and is a substantially newer vehicle, so its long-term record is naturally less mature than that of older generations.
For a used Frontier, verify transmission service, inspect the frame and suspension for corrosion, look for evidence of towing or commercial use, and check that all recalls have been addressed. A clean, stock truck with documented fluid changes is a much safer bet than a modified example with oversized tires, suspension alterations, or an unclear work history.
Verdict: The Frontier is Nissan’s best all-around reliability bet, but buyers still need to verify transmission maintenance, corrosion, accident history, and unrepaired recalls.
2. Nissan 370Z
Best Nissan for reliable performance. The 370Z ranks second with a 7.5 out of 10 iSeeCars reliability score. Its appeal comes from a focused design, a naturally aspirated V6, and a drivetrain that is comparatively uncomplicated next to many newer turbocharged performance cars.
The 370Z was sold in the United States from 2009 through 2020. Its reputation depends heavily on how it was driven. A carefully maintained, unmodified car can be a strong long-term sports-car choice, but many examples have been launched hard, tracked, modified, or driven by owners who prioritized performance over preventive maintenance.
Inspect the manual-transmission clutch and gearbox, listen for abnormal drivetrain or differential noise, check for oil consumption and leaks, and examine the cooling system. Modified suspension, forced-induction equipment, questionable engine tuning, non-original wiring, and mismatched tires should all increase your scrutiny. Convertible versions also produce different longevity results from coupes in the available data; their estimated chance of reaching 200,000 miles is low, which reinforces the point that a model-level reliability score does not mean inexpensive or repair-free ownership.
Verdict: The 370Z is a reliable-performance recommendation, not the cheapest Nissan to maintain. Buy condition and history rather than horsepower-related modifications.

- Compact Design - Car diagnostic scanner is equipped with a 2.5 feet long cable and made of a very thick flexible insulator. There are 6 buttons on OBD2 Scanner:scroll up/down,enter/exit and buttons that quick query VIN vehicle number& the DTC fault code.
- ABS / Airbag codes NOT Supported - It is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work with non-OBDII systems, including ABS / Airbag / Oil Service Light, etc.
3. Nissan Murano
Best family-oriented Nissan crossover in this ranking. The Murano earns a 7.4 out of 10 reliability score in iSeeCars’ Nissan analysis. Its model data estimate an average lifespan in the neighborhood of 144,000 miles and a 13.5% probability of reaching 200,000 miles for a new vehicle.
The Murano’s strengths are comfort, space, and generally pleasant long-distance manners. Its weakness is that the model name covers multiple generations with different electronics, transmissions, and ownership histories. Earlier CVT-equipped examples deserve particular caution. A buyer should look for documented fluid service, smooth engagement, consistent acceleration, and the absence of overheating, warning lights, or transmission-related hesitation.
Do not use a high model-level ranking as a reason to skip a pre-purchase inspection. A Murano that has spent years in stop-and-go traffic with neglected transmission maintenance can be a poor purchase even if the model’s overall statistics look favorable. iSeeCars also lists the current Murano as a leading midsize family SUV, but that assessment combines reliability with safety and family-use criteria; it is supporting evidence, not a pure mechanical-dependability score.
Verdict: A well-maintained Murano can be one of Nissan’s better family vehicles, but the exact generation and CVT history are decisive.
4. Nissan Titan
Best full-size Nissan truck for buyers who accept higher operating costs. The Titan receives a 7.4 out of 10 reliability score and has a strong reputation as a traditional full-size pickup, particularly in its V8-era configurations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Titan’s durability prospects vary significantly with use. Towing, hauling, fleet service, work-site exposure, and frequent operation at maximum load can wear out a truck much faster than light personal use. Gasoline and diesel versions should also be evaluated separately because they have different service requirements, components, and repair-cost profiles.
Inspect the frame, brake and suspension components, cooling system, drivetrain fluids, and evidence of previous overloading. Corrosion is especially important in vehicles operated in regions that use road salt. A clean, stock, well-documented Titan is a more promising reliability purchase than one with extensive modifications, neglected fluids, oversized tires, or a history of commercial towing.
Verdict: The Titan can be durable, but reliable does not mean economical. Fuel consumption, tire size, brake wear, and repairs on a full-size truck can make ownership expensive even when the engine and transmission remain healthy.
5. Nissan Pathfinder
Best when the buyer chooses the right generation. iSeeCars gives the Pathfinder a 7.2 out of 10 reliability score. Its model data estimate an average lifespan of approximately 152,000 miles and an 18.8% probability of reaching 200,000 miles for a new vehicle.

The nameplate has changed character over time. Older Pathfinders used a truck-based, body-on-frame approach, while the fourth-generation redesign for 2013 moved to a unibody crossover platform. The fifth generation arrived for 2022 with a 3.5-liter V6 and nine-speed automatic transmission. These vehicles should not be treated as interchangeable simply because they share a badge.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
When shopping, identify the generation first, then research that vehicle’s specific transmission and maintenance schedule. Test the transmission both cold and hot, check reverse engagement and highway acceleration, inspect for fluid leaks and cooling problems, and verify four-wheel-drive operation where fitted. A Pathfinder with a clear service history can be a credible long-term SUV, but the badge alone says very little about the ownership experience.
Verdict: The Pathfinder is a solid choice when the generation, transmission, and service records are known. It is not a model to buy by name alone.
6. Nissan Xterra
Most distinctive rugged used Nissan SUV. The Xterra is included because it is one of Nissan’s clearest examples of a purpose-built, durable SUV. It used body-on-frame construction and was based on the Frontier pickup platform. The second generation was sold in the United States from 2005 through 2015.
iSeeCars estimates an average Xterra lifespan of about 139,000 miles, a 13.3% chance of reaching 200,000 miles, and a 7.1 out of 10 reliability score. Those figures are not class-leading, but they are meaningful for a discontinued off-road SUV whose surviving examples have often been used harder than ordinary crossovers.
That previous use is the central Xterra risk. Check the frame and subframes for corrosion, examine the cooling system for signs of overheating, listen for timing-chain noise, and inspect the suspension, steering, driveshafts, and differentials for wear. Engage four-wheel drive and verify that the transfer case operates correctly. Look underneath for impact damage, bent components, fluid leaks, and evidence that the vehicle spent substantial time on trails.
The Xterra’s rugged construction is an asset, but it does not make abuse disappear. A stock, rust-free example with service records is increasingly valuable; a heavily modified truck with severe underbody wear can become a restoration project.
Verdict: The Xterra is a compelling durable-SUV choice for buyers willing to inspect carefully. It is not the right choice for someone seeking the quietest, newest, or cheapest family crossover.

Best common Nissan sedan for a careful used-car buyer. The Altima earns a 7.3 out of 10 reliability score in iSeeCars’ current Nissan data and a 7.7 out of 10 overall quality score in its comparison data. Its high sales volume is a practical advantage: parts, used components, and independent repair knowledge are generally easier to find than for a rare model.
Volume is not the same thing as mechanical reliability, however. The strongest purchase candidate is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder example with complete records and a smooth, properly serviced transmission. Give the CVT extra attention, including its fluid history, operating temperature, acceleration behavior, and response during stop-and-go driving. Also check for oil consumption, suspension wear, warning lights, uneven tire wear, and accident repairs.
Because so many Altimas have served as commuter, fleet, or rental vehicles, condition can vary dramatically. A high-mileage car with one careful owner may be preferable to a lower-mileage example that has spent years being driven hard by multiple users.

8. Nissan Maxima
Best choice for a quick, comfortable Nissan sedan. The Maxima ranks below the Frontier, 370Z, and the higher-rated SUVs because its current iSeeCars reliability score is 6.9 out of 10. It still earns a place for its long production history, strong V6 performance, and appeal to buyers who want more power and equipment than a typical commuter sedan.
The final generation was redesigned for 2016 and continued through the 2023 model year. On those cars, inspect CVT operation and service history carefully. Electrical equipment, suspension components, tires, and brakes can also become costly as the car ages, particularly on higher trims with more equipment.
As with the Altima, the Maxima’s transmission behavior matters more than a simple model reputation. Check for delayed engagement, unusual engine revving without corresponding acceleration, shuddering, warning lights, or a history of skipped maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection is especially worthwhile because a smooth test drive does not reveal every developing problem.
Verdict: The Maxima is a strong durable-performance sedan candidate, but it should be purchased as a maintained V6 car—not as a guaranteed trouble-free vehicle.
9. Nissan Sentra
Best budget Nissan when operating cost matters most. The Sentra receives a 6.8 out of 10 reliability score in iSeeCars’ Nissan ranking. Its advantages include affordability, plentiful parts, broad repair knowledge, and generally low-cost routine service.
The key distinction is transmission type and generation. Older manual-transmission or conventional-automatic examples should not be grouped together with CVT-equipped cars when evaluating risk. On a CVT Sentra, insist on records, test the vehicle from a cold start and after it is fully warm, and watch for hesitation, shuddering, delayed engagement, unusual engine speed, or warning lights.
Also inspect the cooling system, suspension, tires, underbody, and evidence of fleet or rental use. The Sentra’s high production volume makes parts easier to source, but that is a total-cost-of-ownership benefit rather than proof that every example is mechanically durable.
Verdict: A well-maintained Sentra can be inexpensive transportation. The best examples are documented, unmodified cars with a transmission history that can be verified.

The trade-off is cost. Fuel consumption is high, and a large SUV has more expensive brakes, tires, suspension components, cooling-system parts, and electronic equipment than a smaller Nissan. Inspect for corrosion, overheating, fluid leaks, worn suspension, brake vibration, and malfunctioning cabin or safety electronics.
Previous towing and off-road use should be investigated rather than assumed away. A properly maintained Armada may last a long time, but that does not make it inexpensive to operate. A buyer who wants the lowest total cost will generally have a better fit with a Frontier, Xterra, Sentra, or smaller crossover.
Verdict: The Armada is a durable full-size utility vehicle when maintained properly, but its size and complexity make every repair and fuel stop more expensive.
Reliable Nissan near-misses
Several Nissan models have enough positive longevity evidence to deserve consideration, but they do not make this historically oriented top ten once generation differences, drivetrain concerns, and intended use are considered.
- Rogue: iSeeCars currently places it seventh in Nissan’s model reliability list. It is common and practical, but the model spans several generations and CVT-equipped vehicles, so a blanket recommendation would be too broad.
- Versa: The Versa currently ranks eleventh in the same Nissan analysis. It can be inexpensive transportation, but its position below the models listed here makes it a near-miss for this particular ranking.
- LEAF: iSeeCars places the LEAF twelfth. Battery age, climate, charging history, remaining capacity, and replacement cost make electric-vehicle longevity a different question from gasoline-engine durability.
- GT-R: Nissan’s flagship performance car has sophisticated twin-turbocharged and all-wheel-drive hardware. It may be mechanically impressive and collectible, but specialized components, high-performance use, insurance, and repair costs make it a specialist purchase rather than a general-purpose reliability winner.
- The newer Z: The 370Z is ranked above because it has a longer ownership record in the data used here. The newer Z should not automatically inherit that position before it accumulates comparable long-term evidence.
What to check before buying any used Nissan
The ranking can narrow your search, but the inspection determines whether a specific vehicle is worth buying. Use this sequence before committing to a used Nissan.
- Identify the exact configuration. Record the model year, generation, engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim, and whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive. A model recommendation without those details is incomplete.
- Obtain a vehicle-history report. Verify the title, reported mileage, accident history, ownership pattern, service entries, and any indication of flood, salvage, commercial, or rental use. A history report can miss repairs and does not replace an independent inspection.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the NHTSA recall lookup before purchase. NHTSA advises checking the vehicle identification number, and applicable lookup options may also use a license plate. Open safety recalls should be repaired free of charge by the manufacturer’s authorized network. Check again after purchase if ownership or registration information changes.
- Test the transmission cold and hot. Drive in stop-and-go traffic, reverse, accelerate onto a highway, climb a hill, and coast at different speeds. Look for delayed engagement, slipping, shuddering, abnormal revs, harsh shifts, or warning lights. CVT behavior and service history deserve particular attention on many Altima, Maxima, Sentra, Murano, Rogue, and other Nissan applications.
- Inspect the structure for corrosion. On Frontier, Xterra, Titan, Pathfinder, and Armada examples, inspect the frame, subframes, suspension mounts, brake lines, and underbody. Surface rust is not automatically fatal, but structural corrosion can make an otherwise attractive truck unsafe or uneconomical to repair.
- Look for basic mechanical warning signs. Check for oil leaks, coolant contamination, overheating, timing-chain noise, uneven tire wear, smoke, low fluid levels, damaged wiring, and dashboard warning lights. Ask the seller not to warm up the vehicle before your arrival if possible.
- Verify four-wheel-drive operation. On applicable trucks and SUVs, engage every available four-wheel-drive mode according to the owner’s instructions. Confirm that the indicator lights behave correctly and that the system does not produce grinding, binding, or unexplained noises.
- Scan for diagnostic codes. A basic OBD2 scanner can show stored and pending engine codes before you pay for an inspection, but it cannot prove that a CVT, frame, suspension, battery, or body is healthy and may not communicate with every Nissan-specific control module. Treat it as a screening aid, not a verdict.
- Prefer stock, documented vehicles. Factory configuration and consistent service records are usually safer than a modified vehicle with an impressive parts list. Investigate lift kits, forced-induction systems, non-factory wiring, oversized tires, performance tuning, and signs of track or off-road use.
- Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. Use a technician who is familiar with Nissan vehicles and can inspect the underbody, transmission, cooling system, electronics, and model-specific failure points. This is the most valuable final step, particularly for a truck, sports car, or discontinued SUV.
Maintenance matters more than the ranking after you buy
Nissan states that maintenance intervals vary by model, year, configuration, mileage, and driving conditions. Use the vehicle-specific information in Nissan’s owner manuals and maintenance guides rather than applying a generic interval copied from another Nissan. Scheduled maintenance is intended to support performance, reliability, durability, safety, and resale value.
That means following the correct fluid, filter, belt, chain, brake, tire, and inspection requirements for the exact vehicle. Severe service—frequent towing, very short trips, dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, extensive idling, or repeated stop-and-go driving—may require more frequent attention than ordinary highway use.

Common mistakes when shopping for a reliable Nissan
- Assuming newer means safer. A newer car can have more complex electronics and a less-proven long-term record. Condition and documentation still matter.
- Ranking the badge instead of the generation. A truck-based Pathfinder, a crossover Pathfinder, and the latest Pathfinder are different vehicles in important mechanical ways.
- Ignoring the transmission. Engine reputation cannot compensate for an abused or poorly maintained transmission.
- Confusing longevity with low ownership cost. An Armada or Titan may last a long time while consuming more fuel and requiring more expensive tires, brakes, and suspension work than a Sentra.
- Buying modifications instead of maintenance. Performance parts and off-road equipment do not establish reliability; they may indicate additional stress or make diagnosis harder.
- Skipping the underside inspection. Frame and subframe corrosion can be more important than mileage on an older truck or SUV.
- Treating a clean diagnostic scan as a clean bill of health. A scanner is useful, but it cannot detect every mechanical, structural, battery, or manufacturer-specific fault.
Sources and scope
The statistical baseline is the current iSeeCars Nissan reliability and longevity research described above. The ranking is an editorial interpretation of those population-level results, not a controlled test, teardown, owner survey, or hands-on long-term evaluation. Nissan generation, drivetrain, and maintenance guidance is based on the model history and official support information referenced in the research. Recall guidance comes from NHTSA, and owners should use the vehicle-specific schedule and recall status for the individual vehicle they are considering.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most reliable Nissan model overall?
The Nissan Frontier is the strongest all-around choice in this ranking. iSeeCars places it first among Nissan models and gives it a 7.5 out of 10 reliability score. The specific generation, transmission service, corrosion condition, and maintenance history still determine whether an individual Frontier is a good buy.
Are Nissan CVT transmissions automatically unreliable?
No blanket statement is accurate. CVT-equipped Nissans should receive more careful scrutiny because service history, fluid condition, heat exposure, driving pattern, and model generation matter greatly. Test the transmission cold and hot, look for shuddering or delayed engagement, and have a Nissan-capable technician inspect it.
Is the Nissan Xterra a reliable used SUV?
It can be, especially as a stock, rust-free, well-maintained second-generation model. Its body-on-frame design and Frontier relationship are strengths, but many Xterras were used off-road. Check the frame, cooling system, timing-chain noise, suspension, four-wheel-drive system, and underbody for accumulated wear.
Does a 200,000-mile probability guarantee that a Nissan will last that long?
No. The figure is a statistical population estimate, not a promise for a particular vehicle and not a prediction of repair-free ownership. Maintenance, climate, accidents, towing, modifications, corrosion, and previous owners can have a larger effect on an individual vehicle’s lifespan than the model average.
The Bottom Line
The best all-around Nissan reliability pick is the Frontier. Choose the 370Z if you want a focused performance car, the Xterra if you want a rugged used SUV, the Murano if comfort and family use are priorities, or the Altima and Sentra if low-cost parts and common repair knowledge matter most. In every case, buy the generation and maintenance history—not merely the model name.
