There is no single all-time test that proves which maxi scooter is best. The strongest candidates are remembered for different things: the Yamaha TMAX helped define the sporty end of the class, the Suzuki Burgman 650 and BMW C650 GT emphasized touring, and early road tests showed how quickly large scooters diversified. This retrospective selects ten notable machines for their historical influence, sporting character, touring comfort, practicality and place in the category—not as a universal ranking or a current buying guide.
What makes a maxi scooter one of the best?
Maxi scooter is a broad category, not a fixed technical class. Here it means large, automatic scooters built for more than short urban trips, including sport-oriented machines, long-distance tourers and a few boundary-crossing designs. The models below span different years and markets, so their specifications are not directly comparable. The selection instead highlights what each became known for and the role it played in the category.
The TMAX’s importance, for example, was not just its engine size. Yamaha says its first-generation machine used a motorcycle-style diamond frame and a separate swingarm, applying motorcycle chassis thinking to a scooter. That approach helped establish the idea of an “automatic supersport.”

1. Yamaha TMAX
The TMAX is the central reference point for the sporty maxi scooter. Yamaha says European sales began in 2001, following the earlier Majesty, and describes the original concept as an “automatic supersport” that combined scooter convenience with sportbike performance. Yamaha’s corporate history says first-generation TMAX sales in Europe reached 5,000 units within half a year of its 2001 launch. Its lasting distinction is the motorcycle-like chassis approach, rather than displacement alone. Later generations changed substantially, so handling, equipment and storage should be assessed by model year rather than assumed from the name.
2. Suzuki Burgman 650
The Burgman 650 became one of the defining large, touring-oriented scooters. It represents a different answer from the TMAX: prioritize a substantial, comfortable machine for distance rather than make sporty character the defining feature. Retrospective and touring coverage repeatedly place it among the class’s major long-distance choices, though that does not make every year or market version identical.

3. Honda Silver Wing 600
The Silver Wing 600 was part of the category’s early expansion. It appeared alongside the TMAX 500, Piaggio X9 500 SL and Suzuki Burgman 400 Business in a 2001 comparative road test, evidence that large scooters were already being evaluated as serious road machines rather than just urban runabouts. That test assessed comfort, weather protection, performance, stability, handling and braking over a reported trip of roughly 1,500 km. 4. BMW C600 Sport / C650 Sport
BMW’s Sport version gave the C-series a more explicitly sporty position. A 2016 comparison considered the BMW C600 Sport alongside the TMAX and Aprilia SRV 850; a separate 2015 TMAX review compared the BMW’s power and storage with Yamaha’s scooter. Those are period assessments, not a claim that model names, specifications or equipment stayed constant across all production years. Visordown’s 2015 TMAX review makes the storage trade-off concrete: that TMAX model year did not match scooters able to carry two full-face helmets under the seat.

5. BMW C650 GT
The C650 GT is the touring counterpart to BMW’s Sport model. A touring-focused comparison set it against the Burgman 650 and TMAX, treating comfort and equipment as important criteria. Keep the GT’s touring role separate from claims about the C600/C650 Sport: the family name does not make their priorities interchangeable. MotorBox’s touring comparison is useful for the questions it asks—comfort, equipment and luggage practicality—but its prices and equipment details belong to its publication context.
6. Aprilia SRV 850
The SRV 850 brought high-capacity, sporty ambition to the class. In a 2016 comparison, the author described it as a less popular but interesting and capable alternative to the TMAX and BMW C-series. That is the writer’s evaluation in that comparison, not an objective ranking. Its place on this list reflects the way it broadened the idea of what a sporty maxi scooter could be.

7. Piaggio X9 500 SL
The X9 500 SL earned a place in the early big-scooter conversation through direct comparison with the TMAX 500, Silver Wing 600 and Burgman 400 Business. The 2001 road test’s roughly 1,500 km route and its attention to weather protection, stability, handling, braking and comfort make it a useful marker of how touring expectations had entered the category. Those period findings should not be mistaken for a current condition or ownership assessment of surviving examples.
8. Suzuki Burgman 400 Business
The Burgman 400 Business brings a smaller-displacement option into a list otherwise weighted toward 500cc-and-up touring machines. Its inclusion in the same 2001 four-scooter road test gives it historical context: the maxi scooter was not a single formula, and buyers could weigh a more moderate engine size against the larger machines’ touring scale. The period test is evidence of its role in that comparison, not a present-day recommendation.

9. Honda X-ADV
The X-ADV is a boundary case. It appears in touring comparisons with maxi scooters, but its crossover styling and adventure-bike cues can put it outside a stricter definition limited to conventional step-through scooter bodywork. Include it when “maxi scooter” is being used broadly for large automatic two-wheelers; exclude it if the category is defined narrowly by traditional scooter form.
10. Kymco AK 550
The Kymco AK 550 adds a more contemporary non-Japanese alternative to the historical mix. It appears among the models considered in touring coverage, which makes it relevant to how the category developed beyond its best-known Japanese and European names. It is a useful inclusion in a broad retrospective, but the sources do not establish a single all-time performance verdict against the older machines.

These scooters were built for overlapping but distinct priorities. A period road test or review can describe a particular model and year; it cannot establish a universal winner across generations and markets.

For touring luggage, a top case can expand carrying capacity, but fitment and safe load limits depend on the scooter’s year, rack and approved equipment. Confirm compatibility for the exact machine rather than assuming a case fits across a model family.
