There is no single best luxury family SUV for every household: the right choice depends on how many people ride regularly, whether you need a usable third row, and what must fit alongside them. These 10 candidates span several size classes and use cases; they are not a universal top-ten ranking. Treat publisher rankings as category-specific guidance, then check the exact model year, seating configuration, child-seat fit, cargo space, price, powertrain and safety record before deciding.
How to compare these luxury family SUVs
Car and Driver’s 2026 family-SUV list combines instrumented testing with editors’ driving impressions. Its roughly 200 data points include acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and enjoyment. iSeeCars uses a different method: its Family Car Score prioritizes safety and reliability, then family-friendly equipment. Its safety component draws on the previous five years of NHTSA crash ratings and the latest IIHS Top Safety Pick information; its reliability component uses proprietary longest-lasting-vehicle research. Neither publisher’s composite score is a government safety rating, and the two lists should not be read as one head-to-head ranking.

10 luxury SUVs to consider for family use
1. Genesis GV80 — a well-rounded two-row starting point
Car and Driver places the Genesis GV80 and GV80 Coupe first on its 2026 luxury family-SUV list, with a 9.5/10 rating for the pair. The page describes the GV80 as a mid-size SUV and lists a $59,195 starting price for the GV80; prices may change and that figure may exclude destination and options. IIHS lists the 2026 GV80 as a Top Safety Pick+.

2. Lucid Gravity — an electric option for larger-family needs
Car and Driver ranks the Lucid Gravity second in its 2026 list, rates it 10/10 and displays an estimated range of 337–450 miles. Those figures are the publication’s ranking-page rating and range display, not a substitute for the official range of a specific configuration. Verify the model’s current availability, seating layout, price and EPA range, and consider whether home or public charging suits your routine before treating it as a family fit.
3. Porsche Macan — a compact choice when space needs are modest
Car and Driver ranks the Porsche Macan third and lists a $67,650 starting price on its 2026 ranking page; confirm current pricing, which can change and may not include destination or options. Its compact-crossover format makes it a candidate for households that do not need a large cabin, but the label alone cannot establish whether it works for your family. Check the exact model’s seating and cargo capacity against your passengers, child restraints and everyday luggage.

iSeeCars places the Volvo XC90 first in its luxury large-SUV, three-row and seven-seat family groupings, with an 8.5/10 Family Car Score. That is a proprietary publisher score, not a safety rating. IIHS lists the 2026 XC90 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrid as Top Safety Picks. If you expect to use all three rows, inspect access, headroom and legroom in the rear and check how much cargo space remains with those seats occupied.
5. Mercedes-Benz GLC — a five-seat, smaller-family option
iSeeCars ranks the Mercedes-Benz GLC first in its luxury small/crossover and five-seat family SUV categories, with a 9.0/10 Family Car Score. The score reflects iSeeCars’ method, not a safety rating. IIHS lists the 2026 GLC as a Top Safety Pick. Its category placement makes it worth considering if you need five seats rather than a third row; test your actual child restraints and cargo load before choosing.
6. Audi Q3 — a subcompact category leader
iSeeCars identifies the Audi Q3 as its leading subcompact luxury family SUV. This is a category-specific lead, not proof that it will suit every family or outperform the larger vehicles here. Check rear-seat room, child-seat installation and cargo capacity with your own equipment, particularly if the car will carry several passengers or bulky gear regularly.

7. Mercedes-Benz GLE — a midsize alternative
iSeeCars names the Mercedes-Benz GLE its midsize luxury family SUV leader. The source’s category result does not establish a universal ranking against vehicles from other size classes. For any GLE under consideration, check the model year, seating layout and required safety equipment. IIHS’s 2025 awards page lists the 2025–26 GLE-Class as a Top Safety Pick+ only with optional pedestrian front crash prevention; verify that the specific vehicle has the qualifying equipment.
8. Acura MDX — a three-row alternative
The Acura MDX ranks second among iSeeCars’ midsize and three-row picks. That makes it a useful comparison candidate for households considering a midsize SUV with a third row. The ranking alone does not tell you whether the rearmost seats or the cargo area will work for your routine, so evaluate both with passengers and gear in place.

The Audi Q7 appears among iSeeCars’ top groupings. The cited category result supports including it in a shortlist, but does not provide a direct comparison with every vehicle on this list. Verify current seating and cargo configuration and assess the third row in person if it will be used regularly.

10. INFINITI QX60 or Buick Enclave — compare the category fit
iSeeCars also includes the INFINITI QX60 and Buick Enclave in its top family-SUV groupings. The available results do not establish a direct ranking between these two or a single placement relative to every other pick here. Compare the exact vehicles you are shopping for on seating, cargo, child-seat compatibility, price, powertrain and current model-year safety evidence.
Which luxury family SUV has three rows?
The shortlist includes vehicles presented as three-row candidates, notably the Volvo XC90 and Acura MDX, while iSeeCars also includes the Audi Q7, INFINITI QX60 and Buick Enclave among its family-SUV groupings. A model’s appearance in a three-row category does not establish that every trim or configuration has the same seating. Check the specific vehicle’s seat count and test the third row yourself. If children or adults will sit there regularly, try getting in and out, sitting in place and loading the cargo area with those seats deployed.

Do not infer child-seat compatibility from a vehicle’s luxury class, size or safety award. NHTSA advises that not all car seats fit all vehicles and recommends checking both the car-seat and vehicle manuals and testing the seat in the vehicle. Bring the actual restraint you plan to use and confirm the intended seating position and installation method.

- Check the child’s age and size against the restraint’s instructions, then consult both the restraint and vehicle manuals for approved seating positions and installation guidance.
- Install your own seat in the vehicle and confirm that it can be secured as directed in the manuals. Do not assume another trim, seating position or installation method will work the same way.
- If you need more than one restraint, test them together in the intended positions and check whether passengers can still sit comfortably.
How to judge family safety evidence
Keep IIHS awards and NHTSA ratings distinct. IIHS’s 2026 awards page lists the Genesis GV80 as a Top Safety Pick+, and the Volvo XC90 and XC90 Plug-In Hybrid as Top Safety Picks. It lists the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC as a Top Safety Pick. These awards apply to the named model year and may have equipment or build-date qualifications; confirm the applicable entry for the exact vehicle. The IIHS awards page is the live reference.
NHTSA says its 5-Star Safety Ratings provide crash-protection and rollover-safety information beyond federal legal requirements, and that it is the only organization that rates rollover resistance as well as frontal and side crashworthiness. NHTSA stars are not interchangeable with an IIHS award, and neither system guarantees how a vehicle will perform in a crash. Check current model-year evidence rather than carrying an award across years or trims without verification.
Use this test-drive checklist before choosing
- Choose the seating layout first. Decide whether two rows meet your needs or whether a third row must be usable often.
- Bring your family’s child restraints. Test the intended seats and installation positions in the specific vehicle, using both manuals.
- Load the real cargo. Try the stroller, luggage, sports gear and school bags in the configuration you expect to use, including with the third row up if applicable.
- Compare current safety records. Check the exact model year, build date, trim and options against IIHS and NHTSA information.
- Match the powertrain to your routine. For gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric choices, verify current EPA ratings, range, charging access and local purchase pricing. The rankings cited here do not provide a complete powertrain or total-cost comparison.
What the rankings can—and cannot—tell you
Car and Driver’s placements reflect its testing and editorial priorities; iSeeCars’ leaders reflect its own category groupings and scoring method. A first-place result in a small-SUV category does not mean that vehicle is better for a family needing three rows, just as a large-SUV lead does not settle the question for a household seeking a compact vehicle. Use the category that matches your household, then make the final decision with the exact vehicle and equipment you would buy.
