10 Motorcycles With Unexpectedly Good Passenger Comfort

These ten motorcycles are promising two-up candidates, but passenger comfort depends on seat fit, knee angle, handholds, wind protection, suspension setup and verified payload—not engine size alone.

If you regularly carry a passenger, start with motorcycles designed for two-up travel rather than assuming a larger engine or more luggage automatically means a comfortable pillion. Full touring motorcycles usually provide the broadest seats, relaxed footpeg positions, handholds and weather protection. Adventure tourers and sports-tourers can come surprisingly close while being easier to use on varied roads. The ten motorcycles below are worthwhile candidates, not a laboratory ranking: passenger comfort depends on the exact model year, seat option, suspension setting, rider and passenger dimensions, and luggage load.

Use the list as a shortlist, then have your passenger sit on each motorcycle and check reach, knee bend, mounting height and support before committing to a long ride.

What actually makes a motorcycle comfortable for a passenger?

A passenger experiences a motorcycle differently from its rider. The rider controls the bars and can shift position; the pillion is largely fixed between the rider, the seat and the footpegs. Pillion Link identifies seat width and padding, footpeg position, handholds and suspension response under the additional load as the fundamentals of two-up comfort (Pillion Link, 5 August 2026).

Seat shape and padding

A genuinely useful passenger seat is long and wide enough to support the sit bones without forcing the passenger onto a narrow rear step. Padding must resist bottoming out but should not be so soft that it collapses after an hour. A stepped seat can stop the passenger sliding forward under braking, although a very high step may make mounting harder.

Leg position

Passenger footpegs that are high and far back create a sharp knee bend. That may be acceptable for a short ride but becomes tiring on a day in the saddle. Compare the knee angle with both feet on the pegs, not while the motorcycle is stationary on its side stand.

Handholds and back support

Secure grab rails let a passenger brace naturally during acceleration and braking. A shaped top case or model-specific backrest can reduce fatigue on longer rides, but fitment is motorcycle- and model-year-specific. Pillion Link notes that a backrest can make a significant difference on extended journeys; do not assume a universal accessory will attach safely.

Suspension, load and protection

Adding a passenger and luggage changes spring preload, sag and braking distances. The motorcycle must remain within its published maximum load, including rider, passenger, luggage and accessories. Wind and weather protection also matter: naked motorcycles expose the passenger to more airflow, while a touring fairing can reduce fatigue and cold-weather exposure.

The ten candidates worth checking

Motorcycle News’ sports-tourer shortlist, updated 17 September 2025, names the following ten models in a UK context (Motorcycle News, “Best sports-tourer motorcycles for long rides in 2025”). The source supplies model specifications and some UK prices dated September 2025, but it does not provide a shared passenger-comfort score. Treat these as candidates for a hands-on two-up assessment rather than a definitive ranking, and verify current model-year equipment before buying.

Kawasaki Ninja 1100SX SE

This is the sport-tourer choice for a passenger who wants substantial road performance without moving to a dedicated full tourer. Assess the rear seat width, the height difference between rider and passenger, and whether the passenger can reach the grab points without leaning heavily on the rider. Check the suspension’s available preload or luggage adjustment and confirm the combined load limit in the current owner’s manual. A tall screen may protect the rider while leaving the passenger in turbulent air, so test both seats at road speed where possible.

Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+

The Tracer 9 GT+ sits in the adventure-influenced sport-touring space: a useful middle ground when you need two-up road ability but still expect commuting and day rides. Have the passenger test the seat transition and footpeg height, then inspect how easily they can climb aboard with luggage fitted. The upright format can be easier to live with than a low, tucked-in sport bike, but the seat height may complicate mounting for shorter passengers. Verify the current seat, handhold arrangement and maximum payload.

Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello

The V100 Mandello is another road-focused sports-tourer candidate. Its suitability depends less on the badge than on the passenger’s reach to the rails and the amount of usable rear-seat area. Ask the passenger to sit in normal riding clothing, place both feet on the pegs and hold the rails while you apply gentle brake pressure. Confirm whether the standard seat or an accessory option gives enough support for your planned distances, and check model-year luggage and load limits before fitting a top box or panniers.

Suzuki GSX-S1000GT/GX

Suzuki’s GSX-S1000GT/GX designation covers sport-touring variants that should be assessed separately for passenger accommodation. Compare the actual motorcycle you intend to buy: rear-seat padding, grab rails, screen shape and suspension equipment can differ by version and year. The passenger should check whether the footpegs force an acute knee bend and whether the seat keeps them from sliding forward. If you carry camping gear or a top case, calculate the combined payload rather than relying on luggage volume alone.

KTM 1290 Super Duke GT

The Super Duke GT belongs on a shortlist for riders who want brisk road manners with touring capability. For regular two-up use, focus on the passenger’s stability during throttle changes and braking, the usable width of the pillion and the amount of wind reaching the rear seat. A passenger who prefers a calm, heavily sheltered ride may find a more touring-oriented design better. Confirm that the suspension can be adjusted for the actual rider-passenger-luggage combination and that the current model’s passenger equipment matches the advertised specification.

BMW S1000XR

The S1000XR represents the tall, upright end of the sports-tourer category. Its riding position can provide more legroom than a low sport bike, but seat height and the step up to the pillion can make mounting difficult. Let the passenger practice getting on and off with the motorcycle held upright and luggage installed. Check for a secure handhold, adequate rear-seat width and a windscreen that does not create excessive buffeting at the passenger’s helmet. Verify payload and suspension settings in the exact model-year documentation.

Kawasaki Versys 1100 SE

The Versys 1100 SE is an adventure-influenced road tourer candidate for mixed commuting, day rides and highway trips. Its format is worth considering when a passenger needs a less cramped knee angle than a conventional sport bike can provide. Tall adventure-style seats can make mounting and dismounting harder, a point highlighted by Pillion Link (Pillion Link). Measure the passenger’s reach to the ground and rails, then test suspension sag with both people aboard.

Yamaha Tracer 7 GT

The Tracer 7 GT is the smaller-displacement option on this shortlist and may suit riders who value manageable size for town use as well as touring. Do not infer passenger comfort from engine capacity: inspect the actual pillion dimensions, footpeg location and available protection. With two people and luggage, acceleration, braking and suspension reserve matter, so check the manufacturer’s load limit and set the suspension accordingly. A shorter passenger may find the lighter, less bulky format easier to mount than a large adventure tourer.

Honda NT1100

The NT1100 is a road-oriented touring candidate where passenger practicality should be part of the purchase decision. Check whether the rear seat gives your passenger enough room to change position and whether the grab rails remain usable with the luggage system fitted. Compare standard and optional seat heights if both are available for the model year. Honda accessory brochures sometimes list comfort-oriented pillion equipment; a 2026 brochure surfaced in search results, but confirm the original catalogue, fitment and availability before treating any accessory as included (Honda 2026 accessory brochure).

Triumph Tiger Sport 800

The Tiger Sport 800 completes the dated sports-tourer candidate list. Its adventure-styled ergonomics may offer a useful compromise between upright legroom and paved-road handling, but the passenger still needs to evaluate seat height, step-up, rails and wind exposure personally. Try the motorcycle with the intended top box or panniers because accessories can alter where a passenger sits and how they mount. Confirm the current model’s maximum combined load and suspension procedure before a fully loaded trip.

How the main motorcycle styles compare for two-up riding

Motorcycle style Where it tends to work Typical passenger compromises Best questions to ask
Full tourer Longest highway days, maximum weather protection and purpose-built two-up travel Large dimensions, high weight and harder low-speed manoeuvring or tight parking Can both people manage the weight at a stop, and is the seat too wide for the passenger?
Adventure tourer Mixed roads, upright ergonomics and versatile luggage arrangements Tall seats can complicate mounting; wind protection varies widely Can the passenger mount safely, reach the rails and keep a relaxed knee angle?
Sports-tourer A balance of spirited road handling, commuting and highway trips Rear seats and footpegs may still be sportier than a full tourer Is the pillion broad enough, and does the passenger remain stable under braking?
Naked motorcycle Shorter rides and simpler urban use More wind exposure and often less dedicated passenger support How tiring is the airflow after 30 minutes, and where can the passenger hold?
Sport bike Solo riding rather than regular passenger duty Small, high passenger seats and tucked-up footpegs Is occasional carrying worth accepting severe knee bend and limited padding?

This category pattern is consistent with Pillion Link’s style guide, which describes full tourers as the strongest starting point for passenger comfort, adventure tourers as increasingly capable for two-up travel and sports-tourers as the middle ground (Pillion Link, 5 August 2026).

A passenger-fit test you can complete at the dealer

  1. Use the real passenger. Bring the person who will actually ride, wearing the boots, jacket and helmet they use on trips.
  2. Check mounting and dismounting. Hold the motorcycle upright while the passenger climbs on and off with the planned luggage fitted. Tall seats and wide top boxes can change the safest sequence.
  3. Settle into the seat. Check whether the passenger’s pelvis is supported across the full width and whether a step or top box forces an uncomfortable posture.
  4. Measure the knee bend. Place both feet on the pegs and look for pressure points behind the thighs. Compare this with the position on another candidate, not with the rider’s legroom.
  5. Test the handholds. The passenger should be able to hold securely without pulling the rider’s shoulders or leaning on a fragile luggage panel.
  6. Check sight lines and airflow. A passenger should be able to see over or around the rider and should not sit in a strong helmet-level buffet from the screen.
  7. Read the load information. Add rider, passenger, luggage, racks, top box and accessories. Stay below the exact model-year maximum payload.
  8. Ask about suspension adjustment. Have the dealer demonstrate preload and damping changes for solo and two-up settings, then record the baseline settings.
  9. Take a short ride before a tour. Begin with local roads, include gentle braking and acceleration, and ask the passenger where pressure, vibration or wind becomes tiring.

Preparing any motorcycle for regular passenger use

Set the suspension for the actual load

Two-up preload is not a cosmetic adjustment. If the rear sags too far, steering becomes slower, ground clearance decreases and the passenger may experience harsh bottoming. Follow the owner’s manual for preload, damping and tyre-pressure settings, and recheck them when luggage changes.

Choose accessories by fitment, not appearance

Passenger comfort seats and backrests can help, but mounting points, seat shape and model year determine whether they are safe. A Royal Enfield 2025 accessory catalogue includes an adventure passenger seat described for extended saddle time in search-result text; verify the original catalogue and exact motorcycle fitment before relying on that description (Royal Enfield 2025 accessory catalogue). Treat “motorcycle passenger backrest” as a category search, not a universal recommendation: confirm the motorcycle, year, hardware and passenger-seat configuration before purchase.

Agree on passenger communication

Establish simple signals for stopping, slowing and discomfort before leaving. The passenger should keep feet on the pegs until the motorcycle is fully stopped, avoid sudden counter-leaning and tell the rider when fatigue or wind becomes excessive. Smooth throttle and braking generally matter as much to perceived comfort as the seat itself.

Common mistakes when choosing a two-up motorcycle

  • Choosing by engine size alone: displacement does not tell you whether the pillion is wide, padded or accessible.
  • Checking only the rider’s cockpit: an excellent rider triangle can hide cramped passenger knees and poor handholds.
  • Ignoring luggage effects: panniers and top boxes can reduce usable seat space and make mounting awkward.
  • Assuming a shortlist is a ranking: the ten sports-tourers above come from a dated UK list, not a controlled passenger-comfort test.
  • Skipping a loaded ride: suspension, wind and braking feel different with two people and touring luggage.
  • Buying an accessory without verification: backrests and comfort seats are not automatically interchangeable across model years.

Motorcyclist’s article titled “10 Best Touring Motorcycles for Two-Up Riding 2025” names the Indian Roadmaster PowerPlus Limited and Yamaha Tracer 9 GT in its search result, but the article body was not accessible for verification. Those names therefore should not be treated as independently established comfort findings (Motorcyclist, 25 February 2025).

How to narrow the shortlist

For the most passenger-focused use, begin with a full tourer and accept the weight and parking demands. Choose an adventure tourer when upright ergonomics and route variety matter, but pay special attention to seat height. Select a sports-tourer when you want one motorcycle for commuting, day rides and fast paved-road touring, then reject any model whose passenger cannot achieve a relaxed knee angle or secure hand position. The right choice is the motorcycle on which your passenger can mount confidently, sit supported, remain protected from the wind and stay within the published load limit for the entire trip.
