1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSome luxury cars have lower reported repair costs than their peers, particularly several Lexus and Acura sedans and SUVs. RepairPal’s 2026 category pages report annual averages from $386 for the Lexus CT 200h to $550 for the Lexus RX 350. Those figures cover unscheduled repairs and maintenance for vehicles from model years 2010–2019—not scheduled service alone or a forecast for a particular car—so use them to narrow a used-car search, not to predict your bills.
What “affordable maintenance” means in these figures
RepairPal’s 2026 category pages describe their cost figure as an average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance. Its stated vehicle data covers model years 2010–2019. This is U.S.-market context; costs can vary by location, vehicle condition, and model year. The numbers are not a maintenance-only budget, a quote, or a guarantee of future spending.
RepairPal says its Reliability Rating measures dependability based on the cost, frequency, and severity of unscheduled repairs and maintenance. The company describes a proprietary calculation using millions of repair invoices along with automotive statistics and predictive data science. Its cost figure is only one part of that assessment: frequency concerns unscheduled repair-shop visits, excluding small routine visits such as oil changes, while severity concerns the likelihood that a repair is major relative to average annual repair costs. As RepairPal notes, expensive parts and labor can raise a luxury car’s average bill even when severe problems or shop visits are less frequent. RepairPal’s method and compact-car data.
The candidates below are organized by vehicle class, not ranked against one another. RepairPal’s reported class averages are $801 per year for luxury compact cars, $739 for luxury midsize cars, $859 for luxury compact SUVs, and $807 for luxury midsize SUVs. Each is a category average for the source’s covered vehicles, not a benchmark for every model year or a promise that an individual car will cost less.

Are Lexus and Acura cheaper to maintain than other luxury brands?
These RepairPal examples make several Lexus and Acura models stand out against their respective vehicle-class averages. They do not establish that every Lexus or Acura is cheaper to own than every rival, or that either brand is cheapest overall. The costs are averages across a data set covering 2010–2019 model years; actual repair needs and local labor rates can differ.
CarEdge publishes a separate estimate of accumulated maintenance costs over ten years, using a different method and time horizon. It lists Lexus at $7,110, Acura at $8,414, and Genesis at $7,591 among its lower-cost luxury brands. Those estimates should not be combined with RepairPal’s annual unscheduled-repair-and-maintenance figures or treated as directly comparable. CarEdge’s 10-year luxury maintenance estimates.
How to evaluate a used luxury car before buying
An average can help identify models worth researching, but it cannot tell you whether a specific car has been maintained or is due for repairs. Use the figure as one screening signal, then assess the vehicle in front of you.
- Confirm the exact model year and configuration. The RepairPal figures cover 2010–2019 vehicles and should not be presented as estimates for newer model years. Research the service requirements for the specific car you are considering.
- Review service records. Look for a consistent history and investigate gaps, repeated repair items, or overdue work. A low category average does not erase a neglected maintenance history.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to assess the vehicle’s condition and flag likely near-term repairs. A diagnostic code scan can add information, but it does not replace a physical inspection.
- Budget beyond repair and maintenance costs. RepairPal’s figures do not include purchase price, insurance, fuel or charging, tires, depreciation, or financing.
How these figures compare—and what they do not say
RepairPal’s model estimates are most useful for a first-pass comparison within a vehicle class. The category averages provide context, but neither the averages nor the model figures establish the expected bill for a particular year, mileage, condition, or region. Nor do the numbers alone identify which car is the best purchase: a used vehicle’s records and inspection matter.
RepairPal describes its rating as “a measurement of vehicle dependability based on the cost, frequency, and severity of unscheduled repairs and maintenance.” That is RepairPal’s own description of its rating, not an independent industry standard. Its ratings are best read as a comparative signal alongside vehicle-specific checks.
