For U.S. shoppers, “cheap” needs a price ceiling: this guide uses under $35,000 as its broad frame and highlights four model-year-specific options averaging under $30,000. The 2026 iSeeCars rankings put ten mainstream crossovers in the under-$35,000 group, but they mix compact and larger vehicles. Their prices are market averages, not guaranteed asking prices, and model-level reliability scores cannot certify a particular used SUV.
How to read these used-SUV rankings
iSeeCars’ 2026 used-crossover ranking considers vehicles one to six years old and the latest model years within the stated price range. It reports average used prices and reliability scores on a 1–10 scale. The publisher says its wider rating draws on proprietary longest-lasting-vehicle research, resale value, safety data, and information on more than 12 million new and used vehicles, alongside NHTSA and IIHS safety data. These are iSeeCars’ analyses, not regulator findings or controlled head-to-head tests. See the under-$35,000 ranking for its methodology and current list.
The broad ranking does not provide a model-year-specific average price for every entry in the material cited here. Where a specific price and score are established, they are included below; otherwise, the ranking’s inclusion under the $35,000 ceiling is the available price context. Local asking prices still depend on mileage, trim, condition, location, and supply.
Ten used SUVs in the 2026 under-$35,000 ranking
These are the ten entries in iSeeCars’ ranking, presented in the source’s order. The available evidence identifies their position and general price-band eligibility, but does not establish a comparable model-year-specific average price and reliability score for every vehicle.

Four model-year options with averages below $30,000
For a tighter budget comparison, iSeeCars’ 2026 under-$30,000 ranking reports these model-year-specific averages and reliability ratings. The averages are not promises about what a particular dealer or seller will charge.
| Model year and SUV | Average used price | iSeeCars reliability rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 Honda CR-V | $29,478 | 8.0/10 |
| 2025 Mazda CX-5 | $28,683 | 8.0/10 |
| 2022 Toyota RAV4 | $27,688 | 7.8/10 |
| 2024 Subaru Forester | $29,733 | 7.6/10 |
These figures come from the 2026 under-$30,000 ranking. They compare specific model years, not every vehicle wearing the same nameplate. A lower average price or a higher score alone does not establish the best buy for a buyer’s needs.

What changes below $25,000
iSeeCars’ separate 2026 guide to small SUVs names the 2016 Mazda CX-5 as its top reliability pick under $15,000, the 2021 Ford Escape under $20,000, and the 2021 Honda CR-V under $25,000. Those are winners in distinct budget tiers, not additional entries in the under-$35,000 ranking. The years and price bands differ, so compare these older-budget picks on their actual mileage, condition, and service history rather than treating them as equivalent to newer models. See the small-SUV budget guide.
Choose by size, condition, and actual price
The ten ranked vehicles do not all serve the same purpose: the list mixes compact crossovers with larger models. Before comparing scores, decide how much passenger and cargo room you need and whether the vehicle’s real-world size suits your parking, commute, and family use. Then compare listings by exact model year, trim, mileage, asking price, and condition. The available ranking data does not provide a same-year, trim-by-trim total-cost-of-ownership comparison across all ten, so it cannot settle fuel, repair, or ownership-cost trade-offs by itself.
Check the individual vehicle before buying
A strong model-level rating is a starting point, not a guarantee about a used example. Edmunds advice summarized by the Associated Press recommends reviewing the vehicle’s history for accidents and problems and avoiding vehicles that show neglect or abuse. Read the AP’s used-car buying guidance, then use this checklist:
Quick Recap
- Review a vehicle-history report for reported accidents, title issues, and other recorded problems; remember that a report cannot establish everything about the vehicle’s past.
- Ask for maintenance records and look for gaps, signs of deferred service, or evidence of abuse.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection so a qualified mechanic can assess the specific vehicle.
- Compare the asking price with vehicles of the same year, trim, mileage, and condition in your market rather than relying on a national average.
- Match the vehicle’s size and layout to your passenger and cargo needs before prioritizing a ranking position.
