This U.S.-market shortlist spans those categories, with each model matched to a sensible German cross-shop rather than presented as a universal winner. Compare the specific model year, trim and powertrain you intend to buy; equipment and pricing vary, and the available evidence does not provide a consistent ten-model head-to-head test.
Start with size and seating
Before comparing badges, decide how much space you need. The GV70, RDX, NX, XC60 and XT5 are compact-class candidates for shoppers considering vehicles such as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC. The RX, GV80 and MDX move the comparison toward midsize luxury SUVs. The TX is a three-row-oriented option, while the Escalade is a full-size vehicle intended for buyers who prioritize cabin presence and passenger transport over compact dimensions.
Those groupings are shopping guides, not exact equivalences: dimensions, seating configurations and available powertrains vary by model and year. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact version you are considering before treating two vehicles as direct substitutes.
Compact luxury SUVs
Genesis GV70: an athletic alternative to the Q5, X3 and GLC
The GV70 is a direct compact-SUV cross-shop with the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Car and Driver includes the 2026 GV70 in its luxury SUV rankings and characterizes it as athletic; that is the publication’s editorial description, not a comparative road test conducted for this guide. Genesis lists 2026 and 2027 GV70 offerings, so confirm the model year and configuration available in your area. Car and Driver’s luxury SUV rankings and Genesis GV70 information provide current context.

Acura RDX: a broad set of compact rivals
Acura positions the RDX alongside the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Genesis GV70, Lexus NX 350, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Volvo XC60. That makes it a useful starting point if you are comparing several brands in one compact-premium shopping round. Acura’s comparison page reflects the manufacturer’s framing; it does not establish that every listed vehicle matches the RDX in price, equipment or performance. See Acura’s RDX comparison page.
Lexus NX: a compact alternative in the same comparison set
The NX 350 appears among the RDX’s stated rivals, placing it in the compact cross-shop with the German Q5, X3 and GLC. Choose the exact NX version before comparing efficiency or features: the model name alone does not specify its powertrain or equipment. The rival grouping comes from Acura’s RDX comparison page, not an independent test.

Volvo XC60: a compact-to-midsize cross-shop
The XC60 also appears in Acura’s RDX rival set. Depending on what a buyer values in size and use, it may be considered against compact alternatives or cross-shopped with vehicles closer to the midsize class. Compare seating, cargo capacity and the exact powertrain rather than relying on category labels alone. Acura’s comparison establishes the rival context, not a complete specification comparison: RDX comparison page.
Cadillac XT5: another compact-class option
Genesis Canada’s 2026 comparison places the XT5 beside the GV70, Audi Q5 and RDX, offering a manufacturer-published rival grouping for shoppers considering those models. Because that page is Canadian and promotional, use it for context—not as proof that U.S. pricing, equipment or availability is identical. Verify those details with Cadillac in your market. Midsize and larger luxury SUVs
Lexus RX: a midsize alternative with 2026 ranking context
Acura includes the RX in its MDX comparison set, making it a natural alternative for shoppers looking beyond compact SUVs. Consumer Reports’ 2026 reprint places the RX fourth among 17 midsize luxury SUVs, with an overall score of 79. That score and rank describe the publication’s 2026 assessment; they should not be treated as a rating of every RX trim or model year. Sources: Acura’s MDX comparison and Consumer Reports’ 2026 reprint.
Genesis GV80: a larger Genesis option
The GV80 gives Genesis shoppers a larger alternative to consider against German luxury SUVs. Acura’s MDX Type S comparison group includes the GV80 alongside the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, which establishes a useful cross-shop but not a claim that every version is equivalent. Check seating layout, engine and trim when comparing specific vehicles. See Acura’s MDX comparison page.

Acura MDX: a three-row-oriented cross-shop
Acura identifies the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 as MDX competitors and also includes the Lexus RX and TX in its comparison set. The MDX is therefore relevant to shoppers weighing a larger premium SUV against German options, but the listed rivals differ in size and seating emphasis. Acura’s comparison is a brand source; use vehicle specifications and a test drive to assess the match. Source: Acura’s MDX comparison page.
Lexus TX: a three-row-focused choice
The TX is the most explicitly three-row-oriented candidate on this list. Acura includes it among the MDX comparison options. Consumer Reports’ 2026 reprint ranks the TX Hybrid second among 17 three-row luxury SUVs and gives it an overall score of 82. Those figures apply to the TX Hybrid as assessed in that 2026 reprint, not automatically to other TX powertrains or model years. Sources: Acura’s MDX comparison and Consumer Reports’ 2026 reprint.

Full-size luxury
Cadillac Escalade: for maximum presence and passenger transport
The Escalade is not a like-for-like compact or midsize replacement. Car and Driver describes the 2026 model as a full-size luxury SUV suited to executive transport and family shuttling. Cadillac’s lineup includes the Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade IQ and Escalade IQL, so confirm which body style or electric model you mean before comparing it with another vehicle. Sources: Car and Driver’s 2026 Escalade coverage and Cadillac’s Escalade lineup.
How to choose among them
- For a compact two-row search: begin with GV70, RDX, NX, XC60 or XT5, then compare the exact vehicles against the Q5, X3 or GLC you have in mind.
- For a roomier premium SUV: put the RX, GV80 and MDX on your list, while checking whether a particular configuration meets your passenger and cargo needs.
- For three-row use: compare the TX and MDX with the GV80 or Q7/X5 cross-shop, paying particular attention to the seating layout you will actually use.
- For full-size space and presence: consider the Escalade separately from the smaller candidates rather than assuming it is simply a more luxurious version of the same purchase.
For any pair, compare matching model years and trims. Confirm local manufacturer pricing, included equipment and packages, powertrain availability, seating and driver-assistance features directly with the automaker or dealer. The sources cited here do not establish a uniform current price, specification, warranty, reliability or ownership-cost dataset across all ten models, so they cannot support a fair total-cost ranking.
