No motorcycle is repair-proof, and the available evidence does not support a statistically verified ranking of today’s ten most reliable models. The strongest cited survey is a 2015 Consumer Reports analysis of more than 12,300 motorcycles from model years 2008–2014. It found that Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki ranked ahead of most brands from other regions, but that historical, brand-level result cannot establish which current model will need the fewest repairs.
Rather than present a false-precision top ten, this guide offers ten models from those historically favored Japanese brands as a starting shortlist—not a current reliability ranking. Before buying, check the exact model year’s service schedule, warranty, parts supply and local authorized-service access, and assess the individual bike’s records and condition.
What the reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ 2015 analysis used owner reports covering more than 12,300 motorcycles from model years 2008–2014. It found Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki significantly more reliable than most bikes from other regions, in that order. That is useful historical context, not proof that every motorcycle from those brands is dependable or that the same order holds for current models. Consumer Reports’ survey summary does not establish a current model-by-model top ten.
The survey also found no statistically significant difference in repair rates among the two-wheel categories it examined. For motorcycles without a service contract, its estimated repair rate for four-year-old cruisers was 15 percent; rates across cruiser, dual-sport/adventure, standard, touring, sport-touring and sport categories ranged from 15 to 23 percent. Those figures reflect that survey period and are not a prediction for a particular motorcycle today. Consumer Reports’ category findings do not identify a category that riders can choose to eliminate repair risk.

- The GIFT OF SAFETY: Our 56-piece Auto Tool Kit makes it a fantastic gift for family members and friends. Parents like to give it to their kids when they drive their first car. Reliability and satisfaction are different measures, too: the survey’s satisfaction leader was not among its most reliable brands. A motorcycle’s popularity or the pleasure owners report is not a substitute for repair evidence.
Ten models to investigate—not a ranked reliability list
The models below are an editorial shortlist drawn from the four brands favored in the historical survey. They are not validated as the ten most reliable motorcycles, and no current model-year repair-rate comparison is established here. A model’s generation, maintenance history, use and availability of competent service can matter as much as its badge. Match any candidate to its exact owner manual and local parts and service support before purchase.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the bike least likely to become a repair headache
Start with the exact bike’s records and condition
For a used motorcycle, ask for maintenance records and ownership history, and look for evidence of damage or deferred work. J.D. Power’s buying guidance emphasizes these factors alongside mileage: an odometer reading alone does not tell you how a motorcycle was used or maintained. J.D. Power’s guide to motorcycle engine life also notes the effects of weather, following the engine-maintenance schedule, care of other components, engine size/performance and use.
- Ask which scheduled services were completed and when; compare the records with the owner manual for that model year.
- Ask how the motorcycle was used, where it was stored and whether it has been damaged or modified.
- Inspect tires, chain and other wear items, as well as the overall condition; factor overdue work into the decision.
- Arrange a qualified inspection if you cannot assess the motorcycle’s mechanical condition yourself.
Budget for scheduled service and wear
Longevity depends on maintenance, not just initial build quality. Follow the model-specific owner manual and plan for routine service and wear-item replacement. Consumer Reports’ maintenance guidance emphasizes preventive care as a way to support longevity and manage maintenance costs; mechanic Joe Dane described preventive maintenance as key to motorcycle longevity and keeping costs down. Consumer Reports’ motorcycle maintenance guidance.
If you choose a chain-driven motorcycle, cleaning and lubrication are basic upkeep tasks; they are not a promise of fewer repairs, and they do not apply to motorcycles with other final-drive systems. Keep the chain-care instructions for your specific motorcycle in view and follow its manual.

Check whether support is practical where you live
Before settling on a model, identify nearby authorized service and confirm that parts for the specific year are obtainable in your market. A bike with a strong historical brand reputation can still be inconvenient to maintain if specialist service or parts are difficult to access locally. Compare warranty coverage for the exact model year and region rather than assuming terms are universal.
How many miles do motorcycles last?
There is no single mileage figure in the cited evidence that can predict the life of an individual motorcycle. Weather, maintenance, component care, performance, use, damage and prior ownership all affect outcomes. When evaluating a used bike, give maintenance records and condition at least as much attention as the odometer; a low-mileage motorcycle with poor upkeep is not automatically a safer bet than a well-documented higher-mileage one.
What makes a motorcycle reliable?
Reliability is the likelihood of avoiding problems, while satisfaction is how much owners enjoy a motorcycle and maintenance cost is the expense of keeping it in service. They are related buying considerations, not interchangeable measures. The historical survey offers brand-level context, but it cannot identify the most dependable current model. For an individual purchase, documented care, condition, suitable use, model-specific service requirements and accessible parts and service are practical factors to investigate.
