10 Best KTM Duke Models, Ranked for Different Riders

The best KTM Duke depends on the rider: the 390 is the all-round pick, the 790 and 990 step into twin-cylinder territory, and the 1390 variants top KTM’s naked range.

For most riders who want one Duke to do a bit of everything, the 390 DUKE is the strongest all-round pick. The 790 DUKE is the natural step up to a twin, while the 990 DUKE and 1390 SUPER DUKE models suit riders seeking progressively more performance. This ranking compares the contemporary Duke range by intended use, accessibility, and KTM’s own model positioning—not by independent back-to-back testing. Availability and specifications vary by market and model year.

How this ranking works

KTM’s Duke range spans small-capacity urban bikes, middleweight twins, and high-performance Super Dukes. “Best” therefore depends on the rider and the job: an easy-to-place city bike is not trying to do the same thing as a flagship performance naked. The order below favors usefulness across a wider range of road-riding needs, then places more specialized or extreme choices later.

The ten entries include three 1390 SUPER DUKE variants as separate models. KTM’s US catalogs show overlapping model years, including 2026 and 2027 listings, and note that specifications can vary by country or change without notice. The 160 and 200 are select-market models in KTM’s materials; check local availability and the exact model-year specification before treating any entry as an option in your market.

The 10 best KTM Duke models, ranked

  1. 390 DUKE — best all-round choice

KTM positions the 390 as an all-round lightweight naked bike, making it the most balanced starting point in this ranking for riders who want more than a purely urban tool without stepping into a larger twin. For 2026, KTM reports a WP FCR4 brake-caliper update. That is a model-year detail, not a claim that every 390 in every market has the same equipment.

Best for: Riders seeking a relatively accessible single-cylinder Duke for varied road use. “Accessible” reflects KTM’s positioning, not a comparative test result.

  2. 790 DUKE — best step up to a middleweight twin

The 790 is KTM’s middleweight parallel-twin option, positioned as a step up from its lightweight models. It makes sense for riders who have outgrown a smaller bike or want a twin-cylinder Duke without moving to the advanced 990 tier. KTM’s 2026 release reports an updated 5-inch TFT and switchgear, and a four-year premium manufacturer’s warranty in the context stated in that release. Warranty terms should be checked for the buyer’s market.

Best for: Riders wanting a middleweight road bike with a twin-cylinder platform and updated 2026 display and controls where offered.

  3. 990 DUKE — best advanced middleweight

The current 990 DUKE occupies KTM’s advanced-midrange tier and uses an LC8c parallel twin. It is a different motorcycle from the older 990 SUPER DUKE, which used a 990 cc LC8 V-twin. The shared “990” name can obscure that generational and mechanical distinction.

Best for: Experienced riders looking for a more advanced step than the 790, while staying below the 1390 flagship family.

  4. 250 DUKE — best small-capacity urban option where sold

KTM places the 250 among its lightweight, approachable urban models. Its 2026 international description highlights a compact chassis and single-cylinder engine. That makes it a sensible pick for city-focused riding if it is sold locally, but KTM’s US range does not make it a universally available model.

Best for: Riders prioritizing compactness and everyday urban use in a market where the 250 is offered.

  5. 125 DUKE — best entry point for new riders where appropriate

KTM describes the 125 as lightweight and approachable, with urban use and new riders in mind. For 2026, KTM says it adds two colorways, improved fueling, a higher top speed, ride-by-wire, Cornering ABS, and a standard 5-inch TFT. These are KTM’s stated 2026 changes; confirm which equipment applies to the local version.

Best for: Newer riders or urban commuters for whom a small-capacity bike fits their needs and local licensing rules.

  6. 200 DUKE — best entry-level performance option in select markets

KTM positions the 200 as an entry-level performance and commuter model where it is sold. It is listed as a select-market model in both KTM’s US range material and international 2026 release, so its presence in the Duke family does not mean it is available everywhere.

Best for: Riders in a market that offers it who want KTM’s entry-level performance-and-commuting proposition.

  7. 990 DUKE R — best focused performance version of the 990

KTM describes the 2026 990 DUKE R as the performance-focused expression of the platform. KTM lists 130 PS, 103 Nm, an 8.8-inch touchscreen TFT with offline map navigation, and fully adjustable WP APEX suspension with rear linkage for that model. These are manufacturer-stated 2026 figures and equipment; verify the local specification before comparing versions.

Best for: Experienced riders who want the more focused 990 variant and its specified equipment, rather than the standard 990’s broader advanced-midrange positioning.

  8. 1390 SUPER DUKE R — best flagship naked for high-performance use

KTM places the 1390 SUPER DUKE family at the top of its naked range. The R is the core model in that high-performance tier, making it a choice for riders whose priority is flagship-level performance rather than lightweight urban practicality. The available material does not provide an independent comparison against the other models here.

Best for: Experienced riders specifically seeking a top-tier Super Duke. Check model year, equipment, and market availability with KTM’s local listing.

  9. 1390 SUPER DUKE R EVO — best if you want semi-active suspension

The EVO is the 1390 variant to consider if its suspension and rider-aid package is central to the decision. KTM’s release describes the EVO as having semi-active suspension and rider aids. The supplied manufacturer description does not establish that it is objectively better for every road or rider than the R.

  10. 1390 SUPER DUKE RR — best limited, performance-focused special

KTM calls the RR a limited, performance-focused evolution of the 1390 family. That positioning makes it the most specialized entry in this list, rather than the best default recommendation. KTM’s description does not establish a universal production quantity or local availability, so check the market-specific details rather than assuming every dealer will offer one.

Best for: Riders seeking the limited, performance-focused 1390 variant and able to confirm it is available in their market.

Which KTM Duke is best for a beginner?

Among the models covered here, KTM explicitly positions the 125 DUKE as approachable and suitable for new riders. The 200 and 250 are also described as entry-level or lightweight options in markets where they are sold, but the right choice depends on local licensing rules, rider experience, and availability. Engine size alone does not determine whether a motorcycle is suitable for a particular beginner.

Which KTM Duke is best for city riding?

KTM’s lightweight tier—125, 200, and 250 DUKE—is the family’s clearest urban-oriented group. The 390 is the broader-use alternative in KTM’s lineup if a rider wants a lightweight naked bike that the company describes as an all-rounder. Those are manufacturer positioning statements, not measured comparisons of maneuverability, comfort, or fuel economy.

What is the difference between the 990 DUKE and 990 SUPER DUKE?

They are distinct generations, not two names for the same motorcycle. KTM’s anniversary history says the original 990 SUPER DUKE arrived in 2005 with a 990 cc LC8 V-twin, with its R variant following in 2008. The modern 990 DUKE is an all-new model using KTM’s LC8c parallel twin. KTM dates the 690 DUKE to 2008, the 125 DUKE’s European-market entry to 2011, the 200 DUKE to 2012, the 390 DUKE to 2013, the 1290 SUPER DUKE R to 2014, and the 790 DUKE to 2018; these are manufacturer-reported milestones.

Before choosing a model

  • Confirm market and model year: KTM’s international release and US catalog do not establish that every model or feature is available in every country.
  • Compare the exact variant: In particular, distinguish standard models from R, EVO, and RR versions, whose positions and equipment differ.
  • Check fitment for parts: KTM directs owners to PowerParts and a spare-parts finder; confirm exact model-year fitment before ordering accessories or replacement parts.
  • Keep the ranking in perspective: KTM’s descriptions help explain the intended tiers, but they are not independent road tests, long-term reliability evidence, or a head-to-head comparison.
