The models below are an editorial shortlist for U.S. shoppers, not a ranked test: it draws on available model-year-specific comparisons, manufacturer specifications and dated Consumer Reports observations. Comfort means more than a soft ride, and performance means more than quick acceleration—seat support, cabin noise, space, handling, powertrain and efficiency all matter.
How to read this shortlist
These SUVs span compact, midsize, luxury and three-row classes, and the evidence available is not consistent enough to rank all ten as if they had been tested under one protocol. The model years also differ. Treat each entry as a direction for further comparison, then check the exact trim and drivetrain: equipment, ride, power and fuel economy can change within a model line.
The most useful comparison separates comfort (seats, ride, noise, room, visibility, access and controls) from performance (acceleration, steering and handling) and efficiency. A quick SUV is not necessarily the quietest or most comfortable one.
Compact SUVs
1. Honda CR-V
The CR-V is a strong comfort-first compact choice when cabin usability and passenger space are priorities. In Consumer Reports’ ratings snapshot dated October 2025, the 2025 CR-V was noted for generous room, braking and simple controls, though it was described as slightly underpowered. Consumer Reports’ observations are not a 2026 assessment. Consumer Reports 2025 ratings snapshot (PDF, hosted by Subaru).

Honda’s manufacturer-published 2025 comparison lists 190 hp and maximum cargo capacity of 76.5 cu. ft. for the CR-V. Its EPA figures vary by drivetrain: 28/34/30 mpg city/highway/combined for FWD and 26/31/28 mpg for AWD. These figures apply to the stated 2025 configurations, not every CR-V or hybrid. Honda Information Center’s 2025 CR-V/RAV4 comparison.
2. Toyota RAV4
The RAV4 is a natural compact rival for shoppers balancing everyday usability and efficiency. In its December 3, 2025 comparison of the 2026 models, Edmunds, republished by AP News, measured the RAV4 at 7.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph versus 8 seconds for the CR-V. The same article reports Toyota-estimated fuel economy of up to 44 mpg combined for the 2026 RAV4 and EPA-estimated up to 40 mpg combined for the CR-V hybrid; these are not figures for every trim or drivetrain. Edmunds gave the RAV4 the edge in that particular comparison for value, technology and efficiency, not in a universal comfort-and-performance ranking. AP News’ Edmunds comparison of the 2026 CR-V and RAV4.
Honda’s 2025 manufacturer comparison lists 203 hp and 69.8 cu. ft. maximum cargo capacity for the RAV4. Its listed EPA figures are 27/35/30 mpg for FWD and 27/34/30 mpg for AWD. As with the CR-V figures above, these are manufacturer-presented 2025 comparisons, not specifications for every later-year configuration. Honda Information Center’s 2025 CR-V/RAV4 comparison.

3. Mazda CX-5
The 2025 CX-5 is worth considering if ride composure, a quiet cabin and responsive handling are higher priorities than maximizing fuel economy or rear visibility. Consumer Reports’ October 2025 snapshot lists a comfortable ride, quiet cabin, responsive handling and a nicer-than-class-norm interior among its strengths. It also notes rear-corner visibility limitations and an infotainment learning curve, with fuel economy described as ordinary. Those are dated observations about the 2025 model, not a blanket claim about every year or trim. Consumer Reports 2025 ratings snapshot (PDF, hosted by Subaru).
4. Subaru Forester
The Forester’s comfort case centers on visibility, rear-seat room and ride quality rather than acceleration. Consumer Reports’ October 2025 snapshot describes the 2025 Forester as having a comfortable ride, excellent fuel economy, good outward visibility and a roomy rear seat, while calling it underpowered. That distinction matters if a shopper values easy everyday driving more than quick passing response. Consumer Reports 2025 ratings snapshot (PDF, hosted by Subaru).
Midsize and larger Mazda crossovers
5. Mazda CX-70 PHEV
The 2026 CX-70 PHEV brings a two-row layout and plug-in-hybrid capability to shoppers who want midsize space without a third row. Mazda’s U.S. lineup page lists a 26-mile all-electric range, a 490-mile combined range and up to 75.3 cu. ft. of cargo capacity. Mazda positions it for agile driving, but those manufacturer claims do not independently establish ride comfort or real-world handling. The page listed a starting price of $44,450 when accessed in 2026; prices can change. Mazda USA’s U.S. vehicle lineup.

Luxury and additional Japanese SUV choices
The available evidence identifies several additional Japanese models worth cross-shopping, but does not provide comparable, current-year comfort and performance assessments for them. Their inclusion here is a shortlist prompt, not a claim that they outperform the better-documented entries.
7. Acura RDX
The RDX is a luxury compact crossover to consider if you want to compare a premium-class option against mainstream compact SUVs. The available candidate listing identifies it among Japanese luxury SUVs, but does not provide evidence to quantify its comfort or performance relative to the CR-V, RAV4 or CX-5. iSeeCars’ Japanese SUV categories.

8. Lexus RX
The RX is a luxury midsize candidate for buyers prioritizing a different price and equipment class from compact crossovers. Compare the specific RX year and powertrain rather than treating the nameplate as one fixed specification. iSeeCars’ Japanese SUV categories.
9. Honda Passport
The Passport is an additional midsize SUV to put on a shopping list, particularly if you are comparing larger two-row vehicles rather than compact crossovers. IIHS lists the 2026 Honda Passport as a Top Safety Pick+; that is a safety distinction, not evidence of comfort or performance. IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award list.
10. Nissan Murano
The Murano is another midsize option for shoppers weighing cabin comfort against driving response in a larger SUV. IIHS includes the 2025–26 Nissan Murano on its Top Safety Pick+ list. The award is useful safety context, but it does not determine ride quality, seat comfort or handling. IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award list.

Which Japanese SUV is the most comfortable?
There is no evidence here for one universal winner. For the 2025 model year, Consumer Reports’ cited observations favor the CX-5 for a quiet cabin and comfortable ride; the Forester for visibility, rear-seat room and ride; and the CR-V for interior room and straightforward controls. The CR-V Hybrid was also noted for easy entry and exit and user-friendly controls, but its cabin was described as noisy. These assessments describe different comfort dimensions and do not establish a single objective ranking.
Which has the best mix of comfort and performance?
Among the directly compared compact models, the 2026 CR-V and RAV4 represent different strengths rather than a clear all-purpose winner. Edmunds’ comparison, republished by AP News, says the CR-V feels pleasant inside, has comfortable, supportive front seats, and feels athletic in corners without sacrificing ride quality. The RAV4 was quicker in that test and had the higher reported manufacturer-estimated maximum combined fuel economy; Edmunds favored it overall in that comparison. Your best fit depends on whether supportive seating and ride/handling balance or measured acceleration and efficiency matter more.
Safety awards are a separate consideration
IIHS recognition can help with safety research, but it is not a substitute for evaluating comfort or performance. Its award list includes Top Safety Pick+ entries for the 2025–26 Mazda CX-70, CX-70 PHEV, CX-90, CX-90 PHEV and Nissan Murano, as well as the 2026 Honda Passport. Confirm the exact model year and any build-date conditions in the award listing before using an award to compare a vehicle. IIHS award list and eligibility details.
Quick Recap
How to narrow your choices
- Stay within the right size class. Start with compact models such as the CR-V, RAV4, CX-5 and Forester if that is the space and price range you need. Consider the CX-70, CX-90, Passport or Murano if you need a larger vehicle; luxury candidates such as the RDX and RX belong to a different price and equipment comparison.
- Identify your comfort priorities. Test the front and rear seats, assess entry and exit, check sightlines and controls, and listen for road and wind noise on the roads you use most.
- Evaluate performance beyond a 0–60 time. Consider acceleration for merging and passing, but also steering response, cornering confidence and whether the ride stays composed on rough pavement.
- Match specifications to the exact vehicle. Confirm model year, trim and drivetrain before comparing horsepower, cargo capacity or fuel economy. Hybrid and plug-in-hybrid figures are not interchangeable with gasoline-model figures.
- Use safety and efficiency as supporting factors. Check the relevant EPA information and IIHS listing for the exact configuration or model year; neither fuel economy nor an award tells you whether a particular SUV will feel comfortable to you.
