For the 2024 model year, several midsize SUVs earned an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. Those awards identify strong safety choices; they do not establish a ranked “safest ten.” Here are ten 2024-eligible choices, with their award tiers and the conditions that matter when checking a particular vehicle.
Ten 2024 midsize SUVs with IIHS awards
This selection includes conventional and electric SUVs, and both two-row and three-row models. It is a representative set of 2024-eligible award winners, not a ranking: the IIHS roster contains more eligible vehicles, and the awards do not compare winners against one another. Model-year and production-date conditions are shown where specified by IIHS.
| Vehicle | IIHS award | 2024 eligibility details |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Explorer | Top Safety Pick+ | 2024 listed |
| Ford Mustang Mach-E | Top Safety Pick+ | Only vehicles built after August 2024 |
| Kia Telluride | Top Safety Pick+ | 2024–25 listed |
| Mazda CX-90 | Top Safety Pick+ | 2024–25 listed |
| Mazda CX-90 PHEV | Top Safety Pick+ | 2024–25 listed |
| Nissan Pathfinder | Top Safety Pick+ | 2024–25 listed; built after November 2023 |
| Subaru Ascent | Top Safety Pick+ | 2024–25 listed |
| Honda Pilot | Top Safety Pick | 2024 listed; the 2025 model is Top Safety Pick+ |
| Hyundai Palisade | Top Safety Pick | 2024–25 listed |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | Top Safety Pick | 2024–25 listed |
These entries are drawn from the IIHS 2024 midsize SUV award roster. “2024–25” means the IIHS listing covers both model years; it does not mean every configuration or production date qualifies. The roster also includes other award winners, among them the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, Kia Sorento, Nissan Ariya, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, and Volkswagen ID.4. The roster labels the 2024 Honda Pilot Top Safety Pick, not Top Safety Pick+.
What separates Top Safety Pick+ from Top Safety Pick?
Both are IIHS award tiers based on specific crashworthiness and crash-prevention evaluations. The 2024 criteria differed in the moderate-overlap front test; the “plus” tier required the newer updated test.

Because the criteria are not identical, keep the tier attached to each vehicle rather than treating both awards as interchangeable. IIHS describes its evaluations as covering crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants in a crash—and crash avoidance and mitigation, which can prevent a crash or lessen its severity. The awards are useful comparison evidence, not guarantees of real-world outcomes. See IIHS’s explanation of vehicle ratings.
How to verify a specific SUV before buying
An award applies only when the vehicle matches the IIHS listing’s model-year, production-date, and equipment conditions. Check the exact vehicle rather than relying on a model name in an advertisement.

- Confirm the model year. Distinguish a 2024 vehicle from a 2025 one; the Pilot, for example, has different award tiers by model year.
- Check its production date. The 2024 Mustang Mach-E award applies only to vehicles built after August 2024. The Pathfinder listing applies to vehicles built after November 2023.
- Match the configuration. Confirm trim and standard equipment against the IIHS entry, particularly where the criteria specify standard headlights. Do not assume an award for one configuration covers every vehicle sold under that name.
- Look up NHTSA results separately. NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program assigns five-star ratings based on safety evaluations that include crash tests and rollover risk. Search its vehicle ratings for the exact model year and configuration, and keep its overall and subratings distinct from the IIHS award.
How to use NHTSA’s five-star ratings alongside IIHS awards
NHTSA and IIHS provide separate safety assessments, so one should not be substituted for the other. NHTSA announced changes to its five-star program on November 18, 2024, including four driver-assistance technologies—pedestrian automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind spot warning, and blind spot intervention—and a crashworthiness pedestrian-protection program. Those announced updates describe the evolving program; they are not individual ratings for 2024 model-year SUVs. Check NHTSA’s listing for the vehicle you are considering before quoting a star rating. Details are in the November 18, 2024 NHTSA announcement.
