Some six-cylinder engines deliver power that rivals many V8s, and some have a documented efficiency advantage in a specific vehicle pairing. But the available examples do not support a reliable list of ten engines that each outperform “most V8s” on both measures. The strongest cases depend on the vehicle, model year, test cycle and whether the quoted power includes a hybrid system.
What counts as “outshining” a V8?
There is no single, standardized comparison behind the phrase “most V8s.” A fair comparison needs the same kind of vehicle and model year, plus a clear distinction between engine-only output and total hybrid-system output. Fuel-economy figures also need a common test cycle: WLTP, NEDC and other market-specific measures are not interchangeable.
The examples below show where six-cylinder engines make a compelling case—and where a blanket claim falls apart. Manufacturer output and efficiency claims are identified as such rather than treated as independent rankings.
Current examples with strong power claims
Stellantis Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six
Stellantis introduced the Hurricane as an alternative to larger engines, claiming the family could deliver more power and torque than many naturally aspirated V8s while improving fuel economy and emissions. Those are manufacturer claims, not a universal comparison with every V8. In its 2022 Wagoneer announcement, Stellantis specified 420 hp and 468 lb-ft for the standard-output version and 510 hp and 500 lb-ft for the high-output version. It also claimed the engine was up to 15% more efficient than larger engines in that application. Stellantis’ Wagoneer announcement

The company said Wagoneer L models with the Hurricane improved combined fuel-economy ratings by an estimated one to two mpg versus the V8 engines they replaced. That is a vehicle-specific estimate; it does not establish the same gain in every model or against every V8. In a 2024 release about the high-output engine’s Wards award, Stellantis quoted Wards editor-in-chief Bob Gritzinger describing its power and reporting improved fuel economy compared with the HEMI V8 it replaced. The award is recognition, not proof of a fleet-wide ranking. Stellantis’ 2024 award announcement
Stellantis also lists Hurricane options in the 2025 Ram 1500 lineup, alongside the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. Its claim of greater power and enhanced fuel economy refers to certain light-duty competitors, not to most V8s as a class. Stellantis’ 2025 Ram 1500 announcement

Porsche 911 Turbo S 3.6-liter boxer with T-Hybrid
The 2025 911 Turbo S combines a twin-turbocharged flat-six with a hybrid system. Porsche reports 523 kW (711 PS) and 800 Nm; these are system figures, not output from the combustion engine alone. The system includes two electric turbochargers, an electric motor integrated into the PDK transmission housing and a high-voltage battery. Porsche lists the coupe at 11.7–11.5 l/100 km WLTP combined, with CO₂ emissions of 266–261 g/km. That is a high-output six-cylinder hybrid, but the figures alone do not show that it is more efficient than a comparable V8. Porsche’s 2025 911 Turbo S technical data

BMW 640i six-cylinder versus 650i V8
BMW’s 2011 UK-market 6 Series Coupé figures offer a useful same-lineup comparison. The 640i’s inline-six was more economical on the stated combined measure, while the 650i V8 produced more power and torque.

| Model (UK-market, 2011 release) | Engine | Power | Torque | Combined fuel figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW 640i | Inline-six | 320 hp | 450 Nm | 36.7 mpg |
| BMW 650i | V8 | 407 hp | 600 Nm | 27.2 mpg |
These are historical manufacturer figures for the UK market, not current results or a modern standardized test comparison. They illustrate the central point: in one direct pairing, the six used less fuel by the quoted measure but did not beat the V8 in output. BMW Group’s 2011 6 Series Coupé release

Earlier 911 generations
Porsche’s overview of the eighth-generation 911’s predecessor lists several high-output six-cylinder versions: turbocharged 3.0-liter Carrera variants at 385 PS, S versions at 450 PS, GTS and Dakar versions at 480 PS, Turbo at 580 PS and Turbo S at 650 PS. It also lists naturally aspirated 4.0-liter GT3 and GT3 RS versions at 510 and 525 PS. These are predecessor-generation figures, not the current 2026 lineup’s specifications. - Complete Accessories: The kit contains over 230 parts. Each finely-crafted part is labeled, and packaged in custom foam carriers to ensure they are organized, complete, and undamaged. A clear, full-color instruction manual is included. While the engine is complex, step-by-step instructions – along with some patience – ensure excellent results.
- Simulation Model: A real electric motor inside the starter motor housing drives the 5-Cylinder Radial engine. The crankshaft, rods and pistons can be observed through special viewing windows. You can observe the operation of the 5-Cylinder Radial engine during the whole process. It is not only a beautiful decoration, but also a simulation dynamic model that can simulate the operation of a real 5-Cylinder Radial engine. Even when not in motion, it is an impressive machine to see.
- Excellent Learning Activity: This kit is not recommended for unsupervised children under the age of 14, due to its small parts. However, it provides a great opportunity for adults to spend time with children. The child will learn to understand and follow illustrated instructions, manipulate parts and basic tools, and to know the accomplishment of a job well-done. It fosters an appreciation for the ingenuity in today’s technology as well as the need for it in coming generations.
A 2016 Porsche release gives another historical example: 911 Carrera 4 and Targa 4 models at 370 hp and 450 Nm, and their S versions at 420 hp and 500 Nm. Porsche said those models used up to 12% less fuel than their predecessors under the stated NEDC combined figures. That is a comparison with earlier versions of those cars—not evidence of an advantage over V8s generally. Porsche’s 2016 911 Carrera 4 and Targa 4 release
Earlier Macan Turbo
Porsche’s historical Macan Turbo press kit lists a 2.9-liter V6 at 440 PS and 550 Nm, with 9.8 l/100 km NEDC consumption. The kit says output rose from 400 PS as displacement fell from 3.6 to 2.9 liters. It is a model-specific, historical example; the figures do not establish a V8 comparison or make the older NEDC fuel figure directly comparable to WLTP results. Porsche’s Macan Turbo technical data

Why a ten-engine ranking would overstate the evidence
The examples span different vehicle classes, years, markets and kinds of powertrain. Some figures describe a combustion engine; the 911 Turbo S number describes a hybrid system. Some efficiency statements are manufacturer claims against a particular predecessor or competitor; others are fuel figures measured under different regional test cycles. Without a common comparison set, ranking ten engines against “most V8s” would imply a level of proof these figures do not provide.
Quick Recap
- For power: check whether the figure is engine-only or total system output, and compare engines in similarly sized vehicles.
- For efficiency: use results from the same test cycle and market, and distinguish certified figures from manufacturer estimates.
- For the V8 comparison: identify the specific V8, vehicle and model year. A six-cylinder may beat one V8 on fuel use while losing on output, as BMW’s 2011 comparison shows.
